The other day, I was in Wal-Mart in the school supply section when I opened up a box of Crayola crayons and smelled them and I swear I almost started to cry. Jeezey-Petes! It was like I was instantly 6 years old again. I saw myself crouched over a Batman coloring book carefully filling in those crisp, black lines with a smudge of cobalt blue. Then I thought back to the multitude of birthday cards and valentines and pictures I drew of spaceships firing laser blasts at enemy space stations with my little fist gripping a rapidly shrinking crayon, and I actually felt an ache in my chest for those days long ago.
I remember experimenting with various brands of baseball cards in order to find out which ones made the loudest noise when pinned into the spokes of my bike. I remember my entire house smelling like burning candles after every christmas dinner. Man, growing up sucks! What are those things that instantly send you back to your youth? What are your time machines? |

I was watching something on the Discovery channel the other day. It was talking about the top toys or toy factories,I don't really remeber. Anyway, they were at the Play-Doh factory and this woman was talking about how Play-Doh was famous for it's scent.
I had forgotten all about that scent. It took me a couple minutes to remeber what it smelled like but when I did I could almost smell it there in the room. Crayolas had a great scent too. I might have to go stock up on Crayolas and Play-Doh. |

Man, growing up sucks! You've said it all!! Just today I was on my way home from ACT testing and saw some little kids out riding their scooters and I thought "man, I wish I didn't have to grow up!!" Right now it's super crazy for me! I'm still out of work (no one in this hell hole of a city is hiring) I have bills coming up and I need to get into school! This is why I have decided to sue my magic and hopefully get a couple table-hopping gigs next week! I can only hope and pray! Anyway to get back to the thread...I see little kids all the time and even though I am not that old I think about how nice it would be to not have these worries and not have to pay bills or anything, but at the same time I think "man, I actually have the opportunity to do SOMETHING with my life" Yeah I guess so, ok. Play-Doh and Crayola's, that definitely brings me back. Remember the big box of 64 different colors? It had the built in crayon sharpener in the back of the box. There were colors in there you'd never heard of like Burnt Umber and Sienna. Another smell that brings me back is the old white school paste, it's hard to find any more but my son brought some home from school a couple of months ago. When he opened the jar I was right back in the 2nd grade.
Firedice, I never wasted my baseball cards in my spokes. It was always playing cards. Bicycles were best, I mean that's why they were named Bicycle, because they were the best ones to put in your spokes, right? A C Spectre |

Oh man! I never made that connection! LOL! Actually, the cards that worked best were my mother's credit cards. Boy, was I in hot water for that one!
Just remembered this. Do any of you remember Big Wheels? They were like these awesome three-wheeled lowriders for 5 year-olds. I had beaten mine to death! The front wheel had a flat spot, the color was faded from sitting in my front yard all summer. Then that christmas, I got a Batman Green Machine! It was like a Big Wheel on steroids! And how about those little christmas ornaments that bubbled? I would stare at those like Oliver Stone sitting in front of the Zapruder Film. Aw crap, I'm old. |
