Ok, having read all of this, I went and plunked down my $12.99 to take a look at what was going on. I have extraordinarily mixed feelings about this service.
From the creator stand point I do have serious concerns as far as how this will affect the payout structure of the magic industry from a sales stand point. Are future creators going to be paid per view? Will they just get a lump sum? What about the people on that site that were never E employees but their material is on there? Will they be compensated as their material is watched for the first time by people (if their contract was for a royalty not a lump sum)? There are a ton of questions here that the industry will struggle with just as the mainstream entertainment world struggles with the same thing. Remember the writer's strike 9 years ago, and the writer's strike that is coming up? That was a direct reaction to this exact thing. Hulu, Netflix, and their ilk made watching TV in your home awesome, but they really messed things up for writers. I was a writer's assistant in LA when it all went down the first time, and I understand why everyone in the WGA was irked and miffed. I can see the same thing happening here if we aren't careful. Everyone is going to have to do some serious soul searching because this was inevitable. All that being said, the content on there is not detrimental to magic. At least, the new content they are creating. I watched the Tony Chang interview, and wow. That's the kind of really interesting theory that I want to hear from advanced practitioners in our field. He doesn't teach one bloody trick, but the concepts he broaches about why we do sleight of hand and why we execute sleight of hand the way we do and the structural conceptions of an effect in relation to the sleights we choose are mind blowing. I found myself thinking, "Man, I've thought about this briefly but here's a guy who has really focused on the simple task of removing four cards from a deck and exactly how that should look." It was the kind of conversation I would have expected in the basement of the Magic Castle with the guys who actually use the castle library at one in the morning, not something I would have expected out of E. ALSO, and I can't believe I'm typing this, Daniel Madison is in this particular video and to his credit he doesn't say a single word. He sits and listens to Tony talk about some really high level structural theory of magic. He's just someone there for Tony to talk to so Tony can talk comfortably and at length without clamming up like cameras make people do. In giving someone for Tony to talk to and not responding, just listening and appreciating Madison is awesome. He doesn't say the word 'Deception' once and it's awesome. It raised my opinion of him. Having him there listening to these really important thoughts is a heck of a good way to get the kids who think he walks on water to maybe listen as well. That was a clever thing to do. If just on 14 year old move monkey watches this and starts to understand that maybe just being able to do a perfect cover pass or midnight shift isn't the end all be all of magic, than this service is a blessing to magic. I'm a move monkey myself, and if I had been able to listen to this conversation a decade ago with one of my heros across the table maybe it wouldn't have taken me so long to relax and chill out about magic. E did something incredible here, and I'm hoping more of the content they produce is on this level. So yeah, the service is full of old E stuff, that frankly even the people at E are probably a little embarrassed that they made at some point. I forgot the revolution coin vanish was a thing. Seeing it brought up some bad memories of what downloads can be... But if they continue to produce content that is as good as that Tony Chang video, then this will be a good product. Just so long as we all sit down and have an adult conversation about making sure that the people who work very hard to invent and create magic are compensated as well as the people who work so very hard to market it.

Oh one side note. In a very prescient move E allows you to Airplay this from your mac to your Apple TV. No idea how PC users can take advantage of this, but frankly I don't care. Get away from me with your plebeian plastic cased laptops and frankly depressing computer "towers". I'll take my meticulously designed and way over priced aluminium uni-body perfection any day of the week.
Seriously though I was a little surprised when I saw the airplay icon in my office. So with one click I was streaming to my television where I could enjoy a glass of wine while watching Tony Chang wax philosophic about prestidigitation. From a tech side, being able to airplay the stream over to my television was pretty dope. If we give them no other credit, they get a pair of thumbs up for making sure that feature was a thing.

Long time creeper, first time poster here.
I understand the concern as to how this could damage the value of future creations, but I'd like to point out that by no means is Ellusionist's streaming service Netflix. If Netflix were to stop licensing other studios and solely focus on their original content, then yes it might be. However, that would drastically limit the content that could be accessed. I could see how this might, short-term, have an effect on the perception of the value of magic creations as a whole, but I'd argue that since the content is limited to their particular stable it would only end up creating a perception of value applicable to their product in the long run. I'm no economist, though. |

If they happen to STUMBLE upon a video, they might watch for a second and go oh ok, and move on. Those that are intrinsically motivated will hopefully find quality YouTube explanations like those from 52 Kards. Maybe after that they find this service. Is it the route I took? No. Is it the route I would recommend? No, but majority of people that have no interest in learning magic are not watching exposure video after exposure video on YouTube. If they end up stumbling upon this service AND paying for it, how does that hurt anyone? They will get some decent content (and some that is not great) and hopefully that will fuel them to go out and buy some good books. Magicians have this self-fulfilling prophecy about exposure. The Masked Magician didn't kill David Copperfield or other illusionist's careers. The methods were whack and the show was corny. It had no longevity because no one gave a S*#t. As far as this service goes, I took the bait and the talk by Chang is great, as well as seeing Jeremy Griffith teach some things finally. I have had a hard time accepting the fact that people just don't want to read anymore, so sometimes you have to accept that this is where we are now. Would everyone be happier if they charged $50 a month? Is it the price, the service, or the company that is really turning you off from it? Ellusionist has done us dirty in the past, sure. But with the content form daOrtiz, Chang, Spade, and others, I think they are taking a step in the right direction. |

People will always have something to complain about.
Had this been something like $40 a month, people would complain that it is too expensive. And now because its relatively cheap, people are complaining that its not expensive enough. Sleepy |

You laugh, but I have seen my wife do a Revolution Vanish that silenced a room - after two other good performers had done a few tricks themselves. She just changed one thing and suddenly this is a pretty good trick.
The magic market has always consisted of a multitude of segments. There's some cross over, but a lot of times people stick to their area. The people who are torrenting and YouTubing $5-$10 card trick downloads are not the people who are ever going to buy the $170 book sets. So in that sense, offering a centralized library of decent resources for a very affordable price only gives them a good reason to actually pay for resources. And if that library keeps them interested in magic to a point where they want to expand their resources, they're already paying for things so they will do what we all did - pay a little more, and then a little more, and then a little more, and then suddenly $300 for a limited, unique, and awesome product seems reasonable. This project will probably have no effect on those high-end market items. The creators of the material are being compensated in accordance with their contracts. Oh, and if you've got chrome cast or anything like that, it should be able to stream to the TV no problem. I know I get the little icon for it, but I actually prefer watching on my laptop.

I can understand this step. The shipping costs , the piracy, the pressure of always producing new good content. (I hope that now The people stop buying pirate magic.)
It is certainly a good idea to make fast a lot of money. Similar to the Million Dollar challenge that made people believe that they could win a Million Dollar by buying ellusionist products . But similar to the Million Dollar challenge it works only one time. People will subscribe for one month . (And they wont be fooled by The Million Dollar challenge again ..) I hope it pays of for Ellusionist! Because I had the feeling that ellusionist struggled (Chris Ramsay leaving, higher Shipping cost, questionable Million Dollar challenge, kick starter campain etc.)
