"There were no weapons involved; there was no aggressive behavior; these were not suspects,” Mr. Merritt said in a telephone interview. “The lone motive they had for the murder was that the vehicle was being used as a weapon, and now that is no longer there." Though the name of the officer hasn't been released, nor the bodycam video, the police are trying to maintain transparency. Looks like it might be a case of driving away in a threatening manner...

All of these cases should immediately be handed over for an impartial federal investigation.
That way the perception of bias can be mitigated, and the truth will come out. Hopefully.

They didn't clarify what type of rifle was used. I'm hoping they are referring to a shotgun with slug load and not a true rifle.
Shooting a rifle in the suburbs IMO is beyond reckless, but shooting a fleeing car of teenagers is far worse.

99% of cops don't carry a rifle.
At least the department seems to be transparent about it. This is good.

Sad as it is mistakes will happen. They "seem" to be handling it correctly. Truth IS coming out.

So what do you think they mean when the say rifle?
I can't imagine a 30-6 being used.

It sounds like there was more than in enough officer present and a false police report was filed. If so, I hope they grow the book at the second officer, too.
On a side note, how stupid do you have to be to lie about something like which way the vehicle was moving, when you know there's a dashcam?

Guess they forgot to tell Bill Buckley. "...as we reason and love, we are able to hope. And hope enables us to resist those things that would enslave us." |

Yea panic is a strange thing. You panic and it causes the incident, then you panic to cover it up.
I'm just glad to see tee department seemingly in front of it. Anyone involved in false reports or attempted cover up needs to be in jail.

Yes, very bad and so very sad for this family and young boy. I'm glad to see the department acting swiftly on the incident. Just horrible!

Police Officer Who Fatally Shot 15-Year-Old Texas Boy Is Fired
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/02/us/da......rds.html Why would you take an AR-15 when responding to reports of underage drinking?

Or, maybe he was scared.
https://www.google.com/amp/www.newyorker......ense/amp Though to be fair, in a nation with 300,000,000+ guns floating around and even toddlers are killing people, can you blame them?

So what he was shot with does not make it any worse in that regard. (And nobody here implied it did.) But it does seem like a lot of weapon for the situation.

I don't blame the police for taking an AR-15. As Danny stated, a .22 would still have killed the boy. In a society today that's unpredictable, I would think the police would rather be prepared for ANY situation than not prepared.

So you are all for a militarized police force?
That is a huge leap from being a peace officer.... That wasn't a short range weapon and he used it in a residential area. A high velocity bullet doesn't always stop at its target.

Yea oops that wasn't my point at all.
One thing is smaller weapons tend to make smaller mistakes. And being ready for anything is simply not necessarily good. Yes bad guys have automatic weapons. Look up the stats on his many cops have been fired upon by them. It is not high enough to justify an A-15 at a drunk teen call.

I'm fine with Tactical teams or SWAT, but IMO local patrol should be more geared to diffusing the situation rather than ensuring peace by intimidation.
