This is an amazing book from a great mind. I'll post a full review once I've had a chance to digest everything, but here's what I wrote on Penguin Magic:
First of all, before this book, I had never learned a memorized deck and had no intention of doing so. Then I saw what it could do, and I was sold. The tips on memory work were incredibly helpful. I found myself knowing the deck inside and out in very little time. Not only that, Patrick teaches how to get into and out of the stack easily. The stack can morph into a mirror stack, Si Stebbins, alternating red/black, and has a few story effects built in, and I'm nowhere near done exploring the possibilities with this deck. Not to mention it contains a lot of great, workable effects. Amazing work, as always, from Mr. Redford.

As a die-hard Mnemonica stack worker for many years, I picked up this book for the same reason I pick up others of its ilk: to learn the non-stack-dependent effects and suss out/convert any concepts in the stack-dependent portions that I can to Mnemonica.
This book, however, caught me off guard. I didn't expect to find a deck laden with possibilities that I've long wished Mnemonica had. The ease at which one can get from a shuffled deck into stack (and the ability to hide in plain sight while doing so); the incredible ease at which one can get to the point of being able to deal the four suits in order; the mere moments it takes to get to into red/black order with no noticeable sequence/pattern... this is impressively thought out. I don't see how this isn't going to become one of my working stacks--if not my main working stack. Even if the effects in the book weren't excellent (they are) this stack would still warrant attention for what it brings to the table functionally. Couple the above together with the fact that Mr. Redford seems intent upon releasing videos for every aspect of the book (there's already an entire host of them, as well as an active Facebook forum where users are sharing discoveries and learning from the man himself) and this has been a real winner for me. Putting it up against some very impressive stack-related books released in the last year... for me, this book (and the amount of effort the author is putting into supporting purchasers of it) may very well take the crown. |

I will post a full review within the coming days. I want to perform some of the material before I post a full review.

I've loved memorised deck work for years, but there's frequently a drawback when it comes to adding to one's reading, which is that a fair chunk of material will be stack specific. I've been following the inestimable Mr Redford's thinking for some time now, and much as I like his writing, wasn't sure there'd be enough meat to TOoO to legitimise the purchase. I'm happy to say that that uncertainty was ill-founded. Many of the effects will work partially or wholly with other stacks, and there are false shuffles and cuts to play with, including the cheeky glory of the face up false shuffle. I think most revelatory, though, is that for many of the built in effects, you don't have to remember the stack to do them. Given how easy it is (faro dependent, mileage may vary) to get into the Redford stack, you can add a fair chunk of the contents to your repertoire without committing the stack to memory.
Happy purchaser; would buy again.

Can anyone say if perfect faro is required to get a spectator's deck into Redford stack?

Allow me to confirm what Madison posted above, you don't need a faro to get into the stack. There are multiple methods in the book on how to stack the deck in front of the participant and some "easter eggs" available outside the book in the special online toolbox.

I've really enjoyed reading this over the last few weeks. Masses of useful content. I know that Patrick makes much of being able to set the stack up on the fly etc - and this is possible - but I guess I would possibly question the 'easily' part. It all depends on your level of proficiency with a deck of cards. Which is obvious - but I suspect that many hobbyists might find it a bit daunting. Of course, this isn't essential, since you can just start with the deck stacked and get going after a false-shuffle. The stacking on the fly is the icing on the cake - and will be used by those who can do it. I've written a longer review which also touches on a few comparisons with other stacks here: http://www.bicycle-cards.co.uk/2017/10/2......-review/ - but overall I'm a big fan!
