I purchased a couple of C/S coins with U.S. Quarter on one side and a 20 Centavo on the other. I purchased a set of 20 Centavos separately but they were closer to U.S. Half dollars in size.
My question is... Has anyone seen a Quarter-sized Mexican Centavo. I attached a picture showing the 1964 Mexican 20 Centavo I purchased along-side a Quarter Thanks! John Click here to view attached image. |

I'm not aware of any 1964 20 centavos coins that are ~24.5mm. Those were all 28.5mm.
https://www.catawiki.com/catalog/coins/c......vos-1964 There are some that are smaller, but of the wrong years/metal, and usually different designs. My guess is they're not real coins and just shrunk, but you could try asking the seller where they came from and/or if they have any real coins. They look nice, though. How do you like them otherwise? |

Tonsofquestions - thanks for confirming what I have been finding in my explorations. I agree that it likely not a real coin because the quarter side of the coin is obviously a reproduction. The Centavo reproduction is very nice. Good detail and looks like a smaller version of a genuine 1964 20 Centavo. I did send the vendor an email, but am not expecting much. It was a third-party vendor on Amazon and I would guess is probably a non-U.S. vendor. I'll share their response should I get one.

Ahh, interesting. I couldn't tell from the picture that the quarter wasn't genuine. If that's the case, then it's even more likely not a real centavo - quarters are pretty cheap.

Hi John,
That one is a fake coin, however Mexico did mint a 10 Centvao coin that is slightly smaller than a quarter and no longer in circulation. These carried the same great Eagle and snake engraving found on the 20 Centavo (which is slightly smaller than a half). They look like copper, but are actually bronze. I have a nice stash of these from the 1960s and once made a small batch of Scotch & Soda with some as the 10 Centavo fits perfectly in a quarter. Ted |
