If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

I actually have this sound effect, along with 1,500 others.
It has been rather quiet around here lately...

Internet forums are quieting down.
Facebook groups are slowly replacing traditional Internet forums. I started getting involved in Internet forums around 2000. Back then I got involved in Usenet forums about banjos, mandolins, and old timey music. I also smoked cigars, and was involved in a cigar forum when 9/11 happened. Dudes were literally posting what they could see out of their windows while it was going on. And then it turned really ugly. Nasty stuff. And the banjo forum got nasty, too. Usenet got nasty. So I discovered moderated forums. (And here I am, posting in one. While I don't always agree with the moderators--I've been banned a few times, but who here hasn't been?--I appreciate the attempt to keep out nasty and ugly stuff.) And I discovered other moderated forums: banjos, mandolins, magic, bizarre magic, busking, gambling...(but no more cigars, because I had quit smoking). Most of those forums have died. What Facebook offers is something like a department store: go to one place and find what you're looking for, instead of checking in to five or six forums each day. It's not the same, and it isn't as good. These days I don't post anything "magical". I just come here to meet old (Internet) friends. Like Tommy. |

We have had an American fellow staying with us for a month, who is a wonderful guy, a giant of a man, a breath of fresh air and it seems quiet here now that he has gone back home.

Yea see Facebook and that stuff is a cop out in my view. It gives you a chance to simply surround yourself with people who agree with you so your feelings don't get hurt.

In my experience, fbook discussion groups (and I've been in a few) are far more volatile, argumentative and badly-behaved than this forum. But a lot depends on the group, obviously.

We lost a few (that I know of). MagicSanta, Al Angello, and Paul Pacific have all been assimilated by Facebook.

Assimilated or banned or life?
It's interesting, because our discussions are less interesting. And why so? Is it really that Facebook is easier, or that it is looser? |

I suspect that the Café has lost a lot of people over the years because of the bad behaviour of some. Even just a quick google check reveals that a lot of magicians out there wouldn't touch this place with a barge pole

I'm happy to see you guys daily. I haven't bothered to figure out why, but facebook groups bore me, so I don't participate.

Yeah, I found fbook too irritating. The way feeds keep updating, the lack of moderation, the bad behaviour, the small numbers of participants ... Not worth it. I've given fbook multiple tries and been part of a few groups there, but I always leave and prefer internet fora. Though they have problems of their own. Nothing beats real people, IMHO. Which is why the death of magic shops and magic socitieties is a real blow ...

I'm not on here nearly as much as I used to be. But I still prefer it to Facebook groups. I think it can be a tad bit over moderated at times, but that's probably better than under moderated. I think most of the people who leave because of the moderators are the same ones who are on FB that I'd like to punch in the face.....LOL.

Not worth it to invest time if when it gets interesting the threads are locked or deleted. Folks naturally go elsewhere to have a discussion. We're left with Red Bikes or Blue Bikes as conversation fodder. A shame, since magicians are a very interesting cross section of the world in their non-magical range of opinions.

I like that we can disagree but yet have a conversation on here.
On FB, if you don't agree it becomes a challenge to their very belief system. Besides, FB tracks every word you post so that they can tailor their ads to fit you better. Here, we're only encouraged to buy yet another $20 deck of cards; because, you know, this one is really cool and will be a collector item very shortly...
