Hi folks,
I’ll post an proper announcement over on the Latest and Greatest very soon, but I received an email today from my friend Jan Forster and it seemed like a good time to let people here know that this new book project is just around the corner. I mentioned it in a post on this part of the forum a while back, but hadn't included the name of the book in the post title. As well Jan’s overall thoughts on the book which I’ve included below, his message made me smile, because he is already coming up with ideas for some of the routines in the book. So I thought to post a message here because this project contains a bunch of stack work and memorized deck material, and I hope will be of interest to folks in this part of the forum. I’ve been working on the final preparations to make it available and it is basically ready to go. This has been in the pipeline for a while, and several people have messaged me in the past week to check when the book will be available, so as well as a head-up to anyone else who may be interested, I wanted to share some of the quotes about it. Also, over the past few years I’ve enjoyed great discussions with a bunch of friends (and great card men) who’ve helped me work through handlings, routines and sleight descriptions etc., and I hope to share a little feedback from those in this thread. There is a small clip here about the project: http://www.thedevilsstaircase.com/ Please feel free to ask any questions here, and I’ll be happy to answer anything I can. "If you enjoyed Greg's "The Devil's Staircase" - I loved it! - then you should get his new masterpiece "Details of Deception". What a modest title! Apart that you will learn some very original twists of sleights you do or will use for sure from now on, it is the wealth of practical applications within the pages that might overwhelm you. And if you are like me an aficionado of memorized deck magic this book is a must read. With Greg's "A.C.A.A.N.", "Sneaky Three" and "The Stranger" (all are devilish clever) I fell in love straight away. " - Jan Forster “Details of Deception is a great read for advanced card workers. Greg section on the second deal. Stacked to Win and The Hold’em Demo will put your second deal chops to the test. Highly recommended.” - Paul Gertner “ WOW what a book. Chapman has done it again! Details of Deception is a perfect title for this book as the authors covers moves and routines in perfect details. My favorite routine was The Accomplice but the chapters on second deal, peeks and the shiner are unequaled. These chapters should be worth the price of the book alone” - Sal Piacente “I especially liked your ACAAN routine, ... and your impossible card locations. I will definitely use some of your ideas.” - Jean-Jacques Sanvert “A few years ago I had the good fortune to be involved with the proofreading of a wonderful book of card magic called The Devil’s Staircase by Greg Chapman. Fans of that book will be very happy to learn that Mr. Chapman is about to release a new book of card magic, kind of a companion piece to TDS, called Details of Deception. It’s an excellent title, because in this book Chapman focuses on the fine details of what makes a sleight, and a performance of card magic, deceptive. …a careful reading of the book will be highly instructive for any intermediate-to-advanced card worker. There are some excellent memorized deck effects, …including a very clever ACAAN routine…an extensive section on estimation with information which to my knowledge has never seen print before, …detailed instructions of how to do several kinds of push-off seconds, along with some killer tricks that utilize the sleight. I highly recommend this book if you’re looking to improve your card magic, if you’re a mem-deck guy or gal, or if you just want to see how deeply a guy like Chapman can think about card magic.” - Jack Shalom Best wishes, Greg

"Very simply, if you do card magic, get this book! If you don't, you will be fooled by someone that did. When I read the book I found myself saying, 'This is a good idea,' 'This trick would have fooled me.' 'I will use this.' My favorite routines were: Any Pair, A.C.A.A.N., MD Poker, That Old Trick, The Stranger, and Sneaky Three. Highly recommended.

I'm the first one in line with cash in hand when this is released. If it's only half as good as Devil's Staircase, it'll still be twice as good as most.

I really enjoyed Devil's Staircase and was fortunate enough to proofread some items for this upcoming release. Greg is a true card technician and his material is a must for card workers.

It has been a good year for memdeck lovers, with Pit Hartlings stunning book, and recently in quick succession Patrick Redford and Woody Aragon both releasing their equally incredible tomes.
I absolutely recommend that alongside these books you pick up Greg's The Devil's Staircase this should be in the library of any memdeck worker, his Stack Work chapter is required reading as is his thoughts on the Pure and Simple memdeck effect. I will repeat what I said in the original thread, Greg was very kind to send me two effects to proof from the new book and if these are a sample of the quality of the rest of the book, then Greg has another winner on his hands! The two effects Greg sent have both been from the memdeck section, and both well constructed, my favourite was an update on One Card Missing from The Devil's Staircase, Greg has re-worked this into a practical and workable version, taking away some of the requirements from the original and adding in the ability for two spectators to get involved in the mixing procedure, but you still return home. This will be a book that all serious card guys are going to want to own, and especially those in this forum that have a leaning towards memdeck work, and I for one can't wait for its release! |

This is a must-have book if you like gambling stuff and very subtle principles.
Greg describes among other things his incredibly natural second deal which is really different. He worked on a way to rise his left thumb on each deal - as you would normally do - and the result is quite interesting. You have a feeling of naturalness which is incomparable when you watch it. You will also find a lot of very clever ideas I am sure you will like if you are a serious card worker. I hightly recommend this book.

Greg, how much of the book is stack independent?

Thank you for all of the kind words folks. WOW. As I said before it's my privilege to have had feedback throughout this project from some really great card men.
The book is essentially ready to make available in a matter of days. I'll post something the moment it's up on the site. Best, Greg

It will be money well spent. There's so much useful information in here. A few of the book's "throwaway" comments about the humble ribbon spread, for example, may well change the way you generally present your card magic. Where Greg's book may differ from some of the other current offerings is in the way that he does not hesitate to layer one deceptive technique on top of the other to produce an effect that has no way to be backtracked.
The combination of techniques that Greg explores to get ahead of the spectators is downright unsporting. They don't have a chance. Just for variety's sake, here's a description of a three-phase effect from the book that does not depend on a memdeck, in fact it's FASDIU, called Stacked To Win: Phase 1 Starting with the three aces on the top of the deck, the performer demonstrates that with just a single tabled riffle shuffle the aces can be stacked to be given to the dealer in a game of heads-up (two players) poker. Phase 2 The three aces are once again placed on the top of the deck, the performer demonstrates that with just a single tabled riffle shuffle the aces can be stacked to be given to the dealer in a 3-player game of poker. Phase 3 Finally the performer claims that with only one extra shuffle he can stack the aces for any player in a 4-player game. After two shuffles the cards are dealt and indeed the nominated hand contains the three aces. As a kicker a fourth card is also dealt to each hand and the lucky player at the nominated position receives the fourth and final ace from the deck. I won't say it's easy, 'cause it's not, but it's not as hard as it may appear to be either.

Thanks, I thought the list would be helpful. Of course some of the mem-deck routines are mentioned in the quotes above, and you are likely to find something here that you could add to your repertoire, but there is a TON of other stuff, and I think this book will appeal to anyone interested in card work. Beyond the routines, the book dips into ideas which have far more broad applications, and I hope you’ll discover new things will each time you open it. Clars, thanks, I appreciate it! Best Greg
