Hi there!
After lurking around for a while, I thought of saying hello. I am Italian and I live in Germany. I am in my mid 30s, which may be too late in order to start with magic. Or not. My curiousity started when I stumbled upon 'Street Magic': I was so impressed that, for weeks, I couldn't stop showing it to whoever happened to come to visit at home. After that nothing - I forgot about magic for years. Then, roundabout one year ago, I found a copy of 'Fooling Houdini' by Alex Stone: I am not even sure whether this is a well received book by the community, but a fact is that it allowed me - a layman - to peek into aspects of magic that I would never thought existed. And I realized how obsessive magicians can become - which is something that I find intriguing. While reading the book, I also watched the specials from Derren Brown and the shows of Penn&Teller, and that was it: I knew that I wanted to discover much more about magic. From here I started digging, and I also realized that - above everything - card magic is what I enjoy the most. As many others, I assume, I started with 'The Royal Road To Card Magic' and 'Marc Wilson's Complete Course In Magic', and here I am, desperately trying to get that card controlled without getting caught. Well, it's fun! Happy to be a new member of the forum: I am looking forward to getting to know more of the community. Meanwhile, thanks so much for the precious tips that I could already benefit from in the time I spent lurking Cheers, M |

Welcome Five of Spades,
I started in Magic a (with cards) at @ 24. It seemed like a very late start but it hasn't held me back that much. Over the years the experience adds up. If you are applied it is not such a big deal (after about a decade). I wish I'd started earlier but it has worked out fine. My first Magic read was "King of the Conjurers: Memoirs of Robert-Houdin". I had no Magic experience at the time. I can't recommend it highly enough. Great fun! Glad you could join us Five of Spades. -Mary Mowder |

Hi Five,
Like you I started in my 30's. I do all sorts of magic, but my favorite is still card magic. My goal is entertainment, so it makes no difference to me if it is an invisible deck or some slight I've worked on for six months - as long as the audience is entertained. The best thing is that you can buy a deck of cards at the drug store on the way to a show for $3.50. Do the show. Then give the audience the cards for a souvenir. And best of all, you have no props to pack up and carry home. Hard to beat. I don't often do this, but you get the idea. Welcome to the group. W. |
