Hi I am contemplating about getting a set of shells and I would like YOUR advice. I'm trying to decide between a few sets of shells the Black Fox turtle and scarab shells, the Street Shells, or the Magic Makers Golden Shells. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I just got the School for Scoundrels Golden Shells and perfect peas and they are so easy to work with that its almost like you just put your hands on them and they do all the work themselves. I can't imagine a better set of shells to go with -- I am also going to get the scarab shells simply because they really look interesting and different.

Any products you get from the School for Scoundrels will be excellent! Now as far as which one? That really depends on what kind of performer you are. Who is your character? What is your vision of yourself performing the trick? Are you demonstrating the "real" street hustle? Are you presenting a dramatic/comedic re-enactment?

The answer to questions will help make the decision. Just remember that it is the presentation and not the props.

The thing about the shell game it is not really the props that you use. The important thing is the routine. You can use a sponge pea and bottle caps if you like. Or a set of thimbles...

It is the routine that is important not the props.

As far as moves and routines... There is a lot of information out there in books and now on video's.

As far as patter and doing it for people, this effect the shell game has historical value. I feel that the spectators want to play the game rather than get a history lesson.

Most people have heard of the shellgame and they like the chance to play the game because they think that they can beat it.

The cool thing that I have always liked about the shell game is that the routine can be as long or short as you like it. Or as your show demands.

I have done it in a trade show and let the spectators win the give away items that were given out at the booth. If the spectators lose at the trade show they lose the give away items that they got at other booths.

So the routine can be as long or short as you need it to be.

Then I have done it in restaurants as just an entertaining trick. I have video of me doing this on a TV show that was taped over 15 years ago at my web site. Including my ending!

Thanks for the information but which set feels or "handles" the best in your opinion. I guess my presentation would just be a fun little thing like a demo why you should not play it maybe with a little comedy but not to much comedy. Sorry for the poor sentence structure I'm in a hurry.

Between the magic makers set and the school for scoundrels set I would say the sfs shells. the sfs street shells, and all of their shells, can be used with or without a pad. they also come with 3 working peas and 2 plastic peas so you can end clean and have the spc. try it out if you would like. I think the scarab shells are really cool looking but then your presentation has to be geared toward them and I think it kind of limits the ways you can present the effect. I have never tried the black fox shells so I don't know how they handle, although I think they have the same design as the sfs shells.

I started with a Vernet set...

I still use them... But I use others too.

The School for Scoundrels and the La Maggiore plastic shells have the advantage that they look like real shells, while the Vernet's look like shiny plastic. But it's probably not a huge issue. I prefer the SOS and LM shells to the Vernet's, but as Glenn indicates, YMMV.
