It is an app, it's just not an app you install on your phone.

It's, as Chris says, a web based app.

Ellusionist can say whatever they like. It's not like they have integrity.

No, it isn't. Any web page can be added to the Home Screen. Doesn't make it an app.

Yes it does if it's an application and not a web page. Just because it is a browser based app it does not stop it being an app. App is short for application, this is regardless of whether it is coded in Xcode, C++, Java or HTML 5. It is a Calculator app that has additional functionality and specifically it is a web based app.

Nice little dig there Mantel. 20 pages of happy customers might disagree with you.

Don't forget every company exterior is made-up of REAL people working behind the scenes. Those people work really hard, as I'm sure you do, and it become a more personal attack on them with a word like integrity.

Lloyd, Will and I have had sleepless nights making sure this is up to standard, bugs are fixed or performers with limited english are personally coached via Facebook messenger. We most certainly do have integrity.

Then may I ask again for what permissions the app asks for?

Ellusionist hasn't replied to that question either.

Hey dude, it's a web-based application, so I'm not sure what you're asking, as it just runs via a browser, but our developer Will knows.

Feel free to hit him up on email and he'll gladly share it with you.

I was simply asking for the permissions of the application, which is standard practice.

Ellusionist finally got back with me and they said they spoke to Will and he said there are no permissions....my response follows:

"Chrome is a web based app…it still is an app and it still needs permissions, so to say that it doesn’t ask for permissions is not correct at all.

If I am installing an application and it is accessing the web through some sort of browser/front-end, it’s obviously asking for (full) network access at minimum. Unfortunately I will be passing on this as either the developer and Ellusionist does not know or does not wish to share the actual permissions….which either way is a bad thing."

Hey there,

Will here, developer of Cipher.

I'd like to clear this up:

Cipher is an APP built using HTML5 and JQuery. It's not a native application that is installed on the phone via any app store or other form of installable package (.app, .apk etc)

As such, Cipher runs in the browser. So on iOS it's powered by the WebKit engine and on Android, Blink (which itself is a derivative of WebKit).

If you're asking about permissions, my guess is that you're using Android.

When you install an Android app from the store, it tells you about what system permissions the app requires and if required, asks consent for those permissions to be granted. Considering that this product runs from within the browser, there is no such requirement nor can there be.

The app needs an internet connection to install, update and validate your license key. It does those things by contacting the Ellusionist servers to check for updates and to validate the license key you enter during initial set up. As of then the app can run quite happily without an internet connection as this is how it has been designed. Also on Android, it makes use of the Javascript Vibration API which dependant upon the implementation of the software on your particular device, may ask for permission when first used. This is entirely OUT OF OUR CONTROL.

We RESERVE THE RIGHT to validate license keys used to activate the app AT ANY TIME post-install to help guard against piracy and unauthorised use.

So you're correct in your assumption that the app requires full network access. That's how the internet and browsers work.

As for the "developer and Ellusionist does not know or does not wish to share the actual permissions….which either way is a bad thing." comment, that is entirely false at best and a gross insult at worst. I'll counter that by suggesting that it is you that doesn't know how mobile technologies work. I've been developing software professionally for the last decade and whilst I'm far from a be-all-and-end-all expert, I'm pretty sure I know what I'm talking about.

I'd have rather gone about this in a more adult fashion and cleared your concerns about this in private than make you look silly on a public forum; this really isn't my style but I suppose when I'm called out with such heinous falsehoods publicly, I'm kind of beholden to set the record straight.

Hope this clears up your concerns and have a great day.

I think we can put that to bed. Thanks Gents.

3rd full performance has now been posted : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrclNxBb1RA

Don't forget to let us know how you get on with performing this in the real world people. We'd love to know.

Well thank you. That's all I asked for.

If it would have been addressed properly the first time I asked it wouldn't have been an issue. I had to ask 3 times and felt that the topic was just being avoided. It is a valid concern to question what I may be installing my device. Perhaps you need to let Ellusionist's customer service know how to respond to such questions. From what they said, they spoke to you and said no permissions needed, which is obviously wrong.

As far as making me look silly, that is not the case. I asked a question, I finally got a proper answer.

Thanks again for the info and good luck with the app.

So far the android App is working great. I was originally going to wait a few weeks before buying it until I was sure the Android version wasn't going to be riddled with bugs. However, after seeing all the support and seeing posts on the Facebook page, I got it sooner. The quick addressing of the small issues and the support for this app, it was a no brainer to not wait. Keep up the great work!

tmoca, I hope this doesn't come off as an attack... After reading your comments, it's clear that you don't really understand the difference between a Web App and a Phone App. If you would have Google'd this, you would have been able to better educate yourself versus belittling the company and jumping to conclusions. This web app itself doesn't require any permissions. Directions were clear that you needed Chrome installed on your phone to use it. So you should be asking Google what permissions are used in their app, as it's Chrome that has permissions. Do you ask every website/web app that you visit on your browser what permissions are used?

Personally, I'm glad it's a web app. Makes things a lot easier overall. Will, Geraint, and Lloyd have an awesome product...

You are incorrect, I definitely do know the difference. My question was valid. I saw the ad which clearly states it's an app, so I inquired. A simple and valid question based on the ad.

I don't blindly install anything on my device. Again the question was valid as the ad calls it an app and it says it it is a download. Perhaps the ad should be adjusted.

Thank you, I expected as much. How many actual customers is that again? Don't forget about the posters who received Cipher for FREE. Not to mention the people complaining about them, posts about bugs, glitches, you, Lloyd, & others padding the thread etc.

WHAT your going to tell the Ellusionist Behind the Scenes Personell that some guy on the interwebs told the truth and said that the company you work for doesn't have integrity?Well done.

Lloyd, Will and You, maybe do. Ellusionist as a whole no.

An anonymous poster questioning someones integrity doesn't have any merit.
