Yes, every day. Carefully routined, they'll never think twice about it.

One tip is, don't actually reveal the exact same info that you asked for. That's a dead give-away for sure. If they entered the year of their birthday, you later tell them the best picture winner from that year; or if they entered a month and date, learn a calendar algorithm and tell them them weekday of their birthday. If you go one extra step and translate their input into something new, it goes a long way toward hiding the method.

Thanks for your thoughts. I am just confused. I don't know a lot about mentalism, but when I saw the full performance I figured it out immediately without even thinking about it. I thought "well yeah... they just told him... so where is the big kicker"... Maybe I will give it a shot one day. I could see it working with older peeople who are not so much into phones etc., but young crowd.. hm...

The sneaky thing about mentalism is that it's not the "trick" that people are reacting to, it's the connect developed between the performer and the audience, and the experience that performer is offering them.

You're stuck on methods. Mentalism may not be for you just yet - it requires a shift in theatrical approach, compared to "traditional" magic.

Yes, precisely. That shouldn't be confusing; It should be confirming. They instantly repeated the exact info that was entered into the phone, and you figured it out. So don't do it that way.

You already pointed out, it's the structure of the routine that clued you in, not a failure of the method itself. For a demo video they have to show us exactly what it does, they have no time to let people forget about it before the reveal, and they can't add anything that it doesn't do "out of the box". It's a good demo of the *product*, and violates just about every principled for a well structured and deceptive *performance*. Can you imagine if they included a routine like the ones I imagined above, but then the hobbyists found out they still had to memorize all the best picture winners or do a complicated calendar calculation in their head? Ellusionist would be accused of false advertising, even though the video was a more accurate demonstration of real world use.

A lot of mentalists will see this and think "Ah ha, I know exactly how I can put that to good use!" If that's not you, don't buy this just to ape the demonstration. Keep it in your mind though, in case you are someday developing a routine and think "You know what I could really use in this situation? That weird little calculator app!"

When I saw the video I knew instantly that I could use it improve my book-test using Shakespeare's Sonnets (and along the way collect some information that I can use in the second act of the show, after the audience has forgotten the calculator). What everyone remembers from the show is that they used their *own* calculators to add their personal birthday numbers, and only entered the totals into my calculator. That isn't entirely accurate, but it's how things are remembered because of my routining. If anyone thinks I peeked at the numbers, they are still stuck with the idea that I saw "85", for example, and somehow knew that was January 3, 1981.

And as I said: I never, ever, repeat the info that was typed into any calculator. They enter numbers. I later predict Sonnets, Best Picture Winners, Star Signs, Weekdays, Moon Phases, interesting news headlines from around their birthday, etc. Now they can't think "This guys knows things about me, but I just told him those things." All they are left with is "He knows things about me that I didn't even know!"

Wanted to comment on this as well, just so you don't make the same mistakes I did. I also thought a phone related trick would play better for less tech-savvy audience members, but my experience has been the opposite.

The younger people who use their apps on the regular, and know all the settings, are the ones who think of it no differently than a pen and paper. They know everything their phone does, and they know it doesn't do *that*. They also are the ones who would be suspicious if you brought out a tiny pocket calculator. "Why not just use the one on your phone?" they would wonder.

The people who need help finding their calculator app or just doing a google search are the most likely to think of phones as magical devices that can do anything.

Your logic is totally reasonable, but when you consider the mentalism proxy that "everyday items" are least suspicious, it becomes clear why the reverse conclusion is actually true.

Thank you so much for your feedback. Your answers really make sense and I get a clearer picture of it now! Thanks a lot!!!

I have Cipher on my iPhone 5S

Major issue is when doing it in a venue which I have logged into their WiFi
it works and then doesn't work.

If depending on Data sometimes I'm in a dead spot.

So depending on and outside source is not 100%.

And when the spectator makes a mistake on the calculator that is another issue.

I mess with it myself and all is good.

Unless their has been some big change I don't know about.

I do not own cipher but have other mentalism apps. This happens to them also. Well, one it does not happen anymore but the other one I used 8 hours Thurs and it happened on and off and I was using data. I have an I Phone 5.

Attention Cipher fans! I have created my own principle for Cipher which I have used live in more than a 150 shows last year. I am only using Cipher and the CP30 principle to get these hits. Video footage is on a Gopro - so it is not HD wide screen surround sound.

https://youtu.be/_Na67JHtFdM

I have written this up as a PDF and I am giving it away to people who subscribe to my newsletter. You can PM for details or click through to my site and look for CP30.

Geraint suggested I do this quite a few months ago!

Pegasus, my buys of late have been hit or miss. At one extreme there has been "In my Genes" and "DFB". At the other end of the scale there has been "The new Selfie Card trick" which ranks as one of my worst purchases ever. I'm very excited about Cipher and believe it or not it was you who put me onto it on the thread for "In Plain Sight" which I'm waiting for delivery. So double thanks !! I will use the toxic force to generate a number for Plain Sight.

Just got this and playing around with it. I have the android version and I'm picking up a discrepancy. When I enter my birthday (pos 1), followed by birth month (pos 2), followed by birthyear (pos 3), the toxic force is revealed but the day of the year I was born on is wrong as is the birth year in the "reveals" sheet - the star sign is correct.
Also , the video explanation does not really explain the following options :
Ignore calc results in reveal
Month displays incorrectly
Ignore reveal before clear
Hide reveal on equals release

Can someone help ? Apologies in advance if this is covered in the previous 23 pages !

I only got it yesterday as well so certainly not an expert but I went through some what you asked about so I will try to help where I can.

AFA the birth day/month, try either reversing the order you enter them or reversing the order in settings (1=2, 2=1). That solved the issue I had which was like yours.

Ignore calc results in reveal
Only the important info shows in results, not the calculation totals. I prefer this and think it should be the default.

Month displays incorrectly
Haven’t gotten to this one yet, sorry, cannot help.

Ignore reveal before clear
Same with this one, sorry. Actually, I think I did figure it out but cannot remember it now. ☹️

Hide reveal on equals release
Enables you to hold down equals sign to see secret info, but when released it goes back to toxic force number. This is so you could take the phone for a brief moment under the guise of seeing what the spectator’s “total” is, get a peek, and then hand the phone back to the spec in order to reveal your prediction of the total.
Watch the “extra features” video for more info about this.
