No doubt the more expensive cups look, feel and work better. On the other hand, if you're just starting with cups and balls and don't have an unlimited budget, cheapos are fine indeed. Years ago I bought a Morrissey combo set--basic, downwardly mobile aluminum. Played around with Mendoza routine for a while, then put the cups away. Just recently I started with them again; have my first gig with them next week.. If I like the routines and the audience reactions, I'll keep using them for a while and then, with the money from that, I'll buy a nicer set. But I certainly don't begrudge the Morrissey cups--they were perfect for a starter set.

Well, here is an update. I now see why heavier cups are indeed better. I don't do much cups and balls work...but the feel of heavier cups help me with certain techniques. I still won't spend 500 dollars on a set...but I am not the curator of the Cups and Balls musuem am I?

Now that I can speak from a position of some authority, I'll say this:
Yes, you can do the cups and balls with plant pots. You can do them with paper cups. You can do them with anything that has a depression in the bottom that will allow a ball to sit on top of them. But a cup with a certain amount of heft to it makes it easier to perform, and a cup that looks nice makes it more pleasant for the spectators to watch. My biggest problem is choosing a set.

To Frank Starsini's post.
I don't know about the suggestion. I don't know if this has been true for annyone else, but when I started and bought my 1st ever cups and balls set, I was HOOKED - I'm still @ the beginning stage for C&B so I still own theset, but I sometimes take it out just to look at it if I can't rattle them around (i.e. at night... no I don't look at it every night before I go to sleep). The set cost me about 20 bucks which I thought was affordable for me and the curvatures looked very nice so I purchased it. Maybe there'll be another set which I'd be attracted to, but I think starting out with a cheap set which suits you is a good idea. |

The copper cups are only going to get more expensive as time goes on. This year has been especially horrible. Copper is darn near becoming a precious metal.
In January 2006 we put a new mainframe in for our milling and engraving machines and ran a dedicated line, the 50ft run of copper wire cost 32.74. This past week we started constuction on a new office and the same run of 50ft copper wiring, hold on to your cups....$142.95. A lot of hoohaa'ing about Iraq and us sending a lot of copper over there, somehow something doesn't add up with that formula. Copper has been on a runaway train going up and down for the past several years, but nothing like this year so far. Before long copper pennies will be worth 10x face value as scrap. What a world LOL. That's one of the reasons we quit making pennies out of copper a few years ago. In Houston, there has been a rash of thefts of airconditioning units from, get this, CHURCHES and FUNERAL PARLORS. They are selling the copper scrap to the junk dealers.

I read in one of my magazines about 2 months ago that pennies prior to 1982 now have more copper value in them than what a penny is worth.. I think the article said, they are worth about 1.5 cents... I will try to dig it out this weekend.

Expensive vs. Inexpensive Cups.
For me it was a progressive affliction. I purchased my first set around 1977 for $5.00, a set of Ravel Super Cups. After working out a routine I was content with and using the Cups for a couple of years I looked for a set with a nicer appearance. I settled on a set of turned wood cups from Mikame. It did not take long to realize that the wood cups were a bit delicate so I looked for a classy set that was more durable. The local magic shop had a set of Copper Morrissey Cups that I felt would fit the bill. Now I felt I was ready for any situation, and this setup lasted some time. As time passed and my experience grew I looked for cups of different sizes for different situations. Pocket size for small groups, larger cups for more distant groups, I also looked for Cups created for special routines, one example is the Johnny Paul cups. In summation I feel that one should use the cups they are most comfortable with, if you do not know which set that is, keep looking. Bill Sutter |

As of today, the price of copper is so high that the copper in a pre-1982 cent is worth about 2.9 cents.

Here is an online article about the cost of the penny pre-1982....It is not the article I read a couple of months ago as I referenced above, but this article is from a couple of months ago and it refers to the 1.5 cents cost/value of a penny..
As Bill pointed out, copper is worth even more today meaning that my 1.5 cents is already outdated and it has only been a few months... http://money.cnn.com/2006/04/24/news/funny/penny/index.htm |

Actually, I just realized that the 1.5 cents cost/value refers to current pennies per the article.... Sorry for the confusion, if any. The pre-1982 penny values are stated accurately by Bill above.....

That cost was the total cost of making a penny in April. The metal content was only 0.9% of that. The copper content of a pre 1982 penny as of June 29 was given as 3.1¢. Imagine what an old English penny is worth!
Now if you consider that the Bertram cups on Martinka's auction went for $2025, and that $100 of that is for the bag and the palming coin, then they went for $136.52 per ounce. I don't guess I'll be selling my cups for scrap metal anytime soon!

That's the current cost of a zinc or aluminum based copper coated penny. That includes what it costs to strike it.
It's kind of funny. This article implies that people who hoard pennies are rare, and that the movement to get away from the penny is something new. I haven't seen any articles anywhere yet that address the fact that there used to be a dollar's worth of silver in a silver dollar, and $20 worth of gold in a twenty dollar gold piece.

In today's newspaper, I found this -
The humble penny's days may be numbered. It now costs more than 1 cent to make a penny and some people are asking if the coin is worth the trouble. The entire article can be read in the following link - http://www.startribune.com/484/story/529468.html

And my wife keeps asking me why I won't get rid of my pennies......... We roll them according to decade until recently, but changed that a few months ago based on the 1982 info... And then there is the new penny coming out in a couple of years...

You could do the same with US paper money. When toilet paper becomes unaffordable, you'll have a stack of sheets to use.
