I just picked up a Derek Alexander fanny pack (yeah, I know how lame "fanny pack" sounds, but what else can I call it?).
It cost about $50, but it's perfect for coin guys like me, who need to squeeze in a few other goodies like cards, etc. The pouch is black leather, very reserved, lots-o-pockets and room. Here's the link to ebags.com, for anyone interested in looking at it: Click Here! All the Best, Mike |

I just can't picture Mike with a fanny pack. Hehe.
I am sure it is a manly one.

Nothing wrong with a fanny pack. They aren't lame at all if they do their job.
I use one too. It's a good way to carry cups and balls and extra decks, etc.

Depending on how your wear it (in the front or in the back), you can also use it as a "Poucher's pouch". It's like "lapping" while standing up. I have seen this done, and it can work quite well.

I use this now for just about everything.
http://www.theambitiouscard.com/pouches/pouches.cfm I used to use and will probably still use a fanny pack from time to time but have decided against it for most venues. I'd like to hear more about the "lapping" idea Lincoln. Frank

I call mine a "hip-sack" and put a small cardboard box in it to keep it open for effects like Lincoln mentioned. And there is nothing wrong with them at all!
I started doing magic out of them a loooooong time ago, as in a beach environment that I was working, a jacket was OUT of the question! Half of my audience wasn't even wearing a shirt, so I had to adapt my style to fit my setting. After getting used to it, I stopped wearing the jacket completely. I have a large one to pack my stand-up show, and a smaller one to pack my walk-around show.

If I'm just performing cards and coins, I carry a leather cigarette case. Most give me room for a couple of decks of cards. The lighter pocket holds the coins and there is still room for some packet tricks. All contained with a nice belt loop to hold it on your waist.

I have a brown, leather, hip pouch which looks similar to Mike's fanny pouch.
It's great for casual walk around using smaller objects like cards, coins, etc. Fanny pouches are usually used by day hikers, are quite a bit larger than the smaller hip types and are usually worn above your fanny. I also have a larger, multi-pocketed bag that holds larger items. For me this was a unique find. I spotted this on a vendor's cart at a rest stop on the Garden State Parkway. Haven't seen anything similar since. I've used this for formal close up where items sponges, special decks, okito boxes, etc, are going to be used. |

I just returned for the purse/leather shop at the local outlet mall. I spent $20 on a "fanny" pack a bit smaller than what Jeff McBride uses (I'm not as magical). The pack seems to have the features I'm seeking, as well as a few I hadn't considered.
A few things things jumped out: * Leather looks much better than nylon. Soft "kid" leather is my preference. * Make sure you check out the zippers, straps (length) and buckles. It's common sense, but I thought I'd throw it in. I lke zippers better than snaps. * Some packs have a compartment with slots for credit cards. It's just the right size to hold packet tricks and a stack of your business cards. * The pack I purchased has small triangular pockets at each end... perfect for thumb tips or coins. * The pack can be worn on fanny, front or hip. Worn low at the hip position, stealing a thumbtip is a breeze. While wearing black pants, it blends nicely, thus reducing the geek factor (a comment from my loving wife). As I found this item as a single piece within a group of thirty different packs, I can't point you to a specific place to purchase. While this item probably falls short of the high-end pouches made specifically for magic, it works well for me and saves money for more equipment. Dave

I hate the term fanny pack, it gives it a neg. con.

Fish,
When the item came into vogue it was worn with the bag at the rear. It can be worn facing anyway you wish and called whatever pleases you. However, when attempting to describe an item, it's usefull to have a common frame of reference and a shared language. I love the term gibecière, but outside this forum, try looking that word up in your Funk and Wagnell. Pouch is too generic. Waist pouch is still a bit fuzzy and "leather waist belt with pouches" is a bit cumbersome. When asked what I'm wearing, I tell people it's my magic survival kit. See if that doesn't open an opportunity for someone to ask you to do a few minor miracles... David

I just turned in my design for one of these.
Should be big enough to hold: ninja rings cards coins silk and TT a small wand and pen on special pockets on the outside business cards on the back of the pouch. convienient but out of the way. the pocket will open sideways for obvious reasons. it will have a flat interior pocket with coin slots like my other pouches. frank

OK I went to Salvation Army and started looking @ womens purses. I never knew how much sh*t you could put into one of those.
Anyway, you remove the top flap and alter it anyway you want. I chose one that didn't really look like a purse, it was dark purple with good stars and crescent moons, kinda magic looking. Same principle as a pouch.
It's never to late to have a happy childhold!
