Thanks Bill,
I think I will get the DVD first. While I'm waiting for it to arrive, do you or anyone else have a preference for the type of thread you use? That is the material from which it is made (kevlar, elastic, etc.). Which do you find is easiest to handle? Which is the strongest? OK, I'll stop asking questions now. Hope I haven't been a pest! |

The ITR is more convenient and practical to use, but the application and handling variations are far greater with the IT. I also suggest getting the videos.

I was getting frustrated with IT and was about to just give it up, but a friend at the shop showed me two options: ITR and LeClair's "Who's Afraid..." I opted for the video and it's great! I don't know if I'll ever try the reel, but I'm having a lot of creative fun with the LeClair Animator. I highly recommend it.
Oh, and for material: elastic. It's no fun finding the breaking point by surprise. At least with elastic you can feel it coming up and correct your movement. By contrast, kevlar is hard to break, but I found that I would either move my anchor or just come free of it, depending on the weight of my anchor.
I need a stage name.

I also have Micheal Ammars thread video. I am looking into getting Who's afraid of invisible thread. What all do you get taught in that though? Just came across your question. LeClaire teaches the "How To" of his system, several effects and how to harvest the thread for very few bucks. With IT is it crucial that you undestand how lighting conditions will affect your performance. I've been busted by raising my hands too high and by doing it in a kitchen with bright light and extremely close audience. It is very easy to forget about "conditions" and go straight into the effect especially after you've taken the trouble to set up in preperation of floating something that will Wow the spec's. Study the IT under some very bright light you will see that it reflects light giving off a metalic appearance. This is what you must avoid at all costs. Try spot coating the IT with a black sharpie. IMO using IT one can perform some of the most magical effects possible so it is worth a careful study. Once the spec looses the mystery it is very disappointing for them - they really don't want to know how it's done - they'd rather be shocked and awed!
