OK I bought these off of eBay(I know big mistake) and the problem is is that they didn't come with a pea or instructions. If anyone could help me I would really be grateful.

Thanks

Howard is right.

The school for scoundrels "perfect pea" is, well . .
perfect. Enjoy using your shells, it's a brilliant effect.

Get a set of sponge rabbits or a spongeball and cut your own pea.

The sponge peas can work very well if you do the shellgame on a mat. You can use bottle caps or thimbles instead of shells.

It is not the props it is the routine that is important!

I have video of me doing the shellgame at my web site... http://www.mrhypnotist.org

I hope this helps,

Could anyone send me a PM with a walk through of the moves?

I have read a couple of posts on this subject and I am now very confused because I have read about many different types and it seems that some have an opening in the back? and some are magnetic?

Well the ones I have are not magnetic and they have no openings nor can they tilt or anything.

What shells did you buy? Are they the magic makers gold shells? If they are then they will only work good on a mat. Once you get a pea or something similar to use and play around with it a little then I am sure you will figure it out.

I think they are the magic makers gold shells. Would anyone say that the magnetic ones are better? Also if you were using the magnetic ones then wouldn't they prevent you from turning over the shells?

I used to own a shell set where one shell was magnetic. No I couldn't turn over the shell. After I lifted the magnetic shell and showed the pea gone, I would steal the pea out by sliding the shell forward. One thing though. Because of the magnet, the magnetic pea could not compress as small as the "regular" pea. That being said, it really was magical to place the shell on the magnetic pea and make it disappear with no moves.

So would you recommend a magnetic one?

Jkta99,

What you are asking is beyond the means of this site. Detailing a complete routine for you would be a work of love on someones part.

Others have given you the best advice and site to get this information. If you do not wish to purchase these instructions. Join a magic club in your area.

Being you are in New Orleans, call Harry Anderson's store for a personalized visit. I am sure he has what you are looking for as this was a trade mark effect in his pre television days. Plus you get to meet a famous actor. Remember, Night Court the sitcom?

Hello Jkta99,

I’m learning the Three Shell Game at the moment, so it is all new to me too. Some books and a video that have proved useful to me are:

Frank Garcia’s ‘Tells It All In A Nutshell’ (Published by Million Dollar Productions).

Ralph W. Read’s ‘The Three Shell Game’ (Published by Lee Grey).

Bob Sheets’ ‘Absolutely Nuts’ Video (Denny & Lee Magic Studio).

The Garcia book is hard to acquire, but I believe that the Ralph Read book is easier to find and recommended by many Three Shell workers.

Good luck!

If you get the magnetic shells you don't use the special ability of the magnet to do all of the moves. it can be used very effectively if used sparingly. it sounds like you don't want to put in the time and effort to learn the moves and are looking for an easy way out.

Jtka99,
Free advice is always worth about half what you pay for it. So no matter what I (or anyone else) tells you, it still may not fit your style. On the other hand, there is wisdom to be gained from others' experience (and mistakes). At any rate, keep the proverbial grain of salt handy.

All I can do is tell you what worked for me and let you take away from that what works for you.

The first thing to determine, is what kind of shells you have. Do they have a small notch (opening) cut into the rear of each shell? This is called the Chanin dip. It make doing some the the moves easier.

As for magnetic vs. non-magnetic shells, both have advantages in different situations. My personal opinion (and it is only that) is that it is a good idea to master the basic moves with a set of traditional shells (and I'm guessing that's what you have) before you start working with a magnetic set. Besides, most of what is out there as far as books and videos assume you are using non-magnetic shells anyway. You can always go to a magnetic set later when you understand how (and why) the game works.

Next, let's consider the pea. Most of the time you would have a pea when you buy your shells, but that is not the case here. Some of the advice above on peas is right on the money. Try them all. Find out what works for you (and what doesn't). Experiment. My preference is for the School for Scoundrels perfect pea. It is, to use a phrase Max Maven seems to be fond of, a thing of terrifying beauty. In the mean time, try using different kinds of foam rubber, or pull the eraser off a pencil and trim it into a ball. That can work VERY well.

As for the moves and a routine, any the the resources listed above will serve. But, do check out the School for Scoundrels. I personally favor Bob Kohler's Golden Shells routine (available on video). It is a very good study in psychology and technique. Bob Sheets' beautiful acquitment handling in his video "Absolutely Nuts" is a must have. Beyond that, there are tons of stuff out there both in print and on video. But these are certainly a good place to start that isn't too overwhelming.

Start slow. Keep it simple (and keep it short). And don't be afraid to do it and get caught because you will...at first. It's good motivation to get better. And most of all. Have fun with it. When I got my shells, I was really kind of afraid of them and didn't quite know where to begin. I floundered a lot. Now, they are old friends and bring me more joy than a lot of the other magic I do.

PM me. I will be happy to help you figure out what works for you. Bring your own salt.

Sound advice Erik ,
I've really got a taste for the sleight of hand thing! Just recently bought some "Paul Fox" style cups, great buy @ $75 from http://www.calmagic.com together with Ammars Book and am about to get some shells. I reckon the optimum deal is The Street Shells and Perfect Peas and, for starters, Tom Osbornes booklet.
I must say over the last two years the comments and opinions aired in these threads has really been worth a lot more than " half what you pay". Keep the comments coming..How sad are we dabbling on here on Easter Monday!!!

Erik Anderson

Erik, the notch is not the Chanin Dip

See recent post below from Whit Haydn

From what I understand, the dip keeps the shells from lying flat. It makes the shells rock so you can push down on the front and the back lifts up. But is this necessary anymore with the advent of "the perfect pea"

All the better shells already have the "twig" notch at the back for the pea to *use*.
