Not a review in the "proper sense" but I am wondering how people prefer to display the books on their shelf. More specifically, do you display them with or without the dust jackets?
I got a nice wooden set of shelves made up to keep all my magic books and magic "items" all in one place (for the most part). Before, I kept my books neatly packed away in a big plastic storage container and since I don't want to damage the dust jackets (in storage or while reading) I had put them all neatly into a large "wardrobe" box (It was the box that J.C.Penny sent my suit jacket in and the dust jackets fit nicely). Now that I have all my books on display, It is nice to look at the colorful dust jackets up on the shelf but I also read a lot of e-books so "the book experience" is not as important to me as the information contained within. So, I am wondering, should they be displayed like this (taking a chance on damaging one removing it from the shelf or reading with it on)? or should I keep them neatly away to preserve the condition (I do buy and sell my used magic books from time to time and know that people seem really picky in wanting a near perfect dust jacket)?

I wrap all my dust jackets with acid-free polyester covers. No worries about it after that.

I keep all my dustjackets on. There is a way of handling, reading, removing, and replacing the books, without ever blemishing the dustjackets.

I used to do all my good ones up back in the old days when the shop was still there. One time when I was moving I had packed all my books into a cabinet, and I had a stack in there that were just in the original dustjackets. I had Classic Magic Of Larry Jennings on top of the Art of Astonishment, and when I tried to get the Jennings out I caught the Astonishment cover in my hand with it and ripped it right in half. I was p***ed off for days. It still makes me cringe when I look at that cover, as any book lovers here will understand. The polyester covers will keep them in pretty pristine shape, although I find them a bit less appealing to look at and handle that way. |

Or Is there a better way that you are referring to? Thanks for all the answers so far. I will say, I am getting a lot more reading done now that they are sitting so nicely on the shelf instead of being packed in a box waiting for me to "need them".

I'm not attempting to hijack the thread here, but I have a question for you guys along these lines. Do you store your books where guests can see them? Or do you have sort of a library/study where people won't be able to browse through? I'm a book lover, and I love having my books in general out in the open in my living space, but my magic books are all in a locked cabinet in my bedroom closet. This sounds a bit extreme, I know, but I hate the idea of (let's say) the brother-in-law stopping by to visit my wife while I'm at work, and they say "OH, Wordsworth is into magic..." and they pick up some of my books and flip through them. If you think about it, just looking through a single trick could reveal several principles that your audience CANNOT know. It drives me nuts to think of a layperson browsing through that stuff. The reason for the lock and key is not to stop criminals, but to make sure my young son doesn't look. He makes a great, and very curious audience, but I only want to pass my secrets on when he's old enough to respect what's in all those books.
I'm curious what you guys do along these lines. |

I prefer the Brodart Just-a-Fold III over the center loading style that Sponge linked to. They can be found at the link below. I find these easier to install and more accommodating to different sized covers.

I keep the dust covers on but place them horizontally (in stacks of 4 or 5 books on top of each other) on the shelf instead of vertically.

Dust jackets on. It's eye candy!!!! And I keep them upstairs in two large bookcases that anyone can get to. It's been my experience that no guests grab a book and begin reading. Used to keep them in a walk-in closet and then realized, for me, that it kind of silly. Plus, I want easier access to my books....

I agree wholeheartedly with this
http://flavorwire.com/406096/against-dust-jackets Dust jackets are awful things that serve pretty much no practical purpose and just exist to hide the natural beauty of a book, and be a faff when reading. That being said I tend just to remove them and keep them rather than throwing them away, just in case I'm ever going to give the book to someone who actually values these loathsome, easily rippable things. |

I think the re-sale value of books is higher with original dust jackets.

I don't know if you have to worry about your son looking at them - they might be more attractive under lock and key as something "forbidden". Most kids today just have to search YouTube if they want to find out a secret. If they are going to take the time to read a book - I'd say more power to them! <grin>
As for displaying books - I just leave the dust covers on, as I'd probably forget where I stored the dust-jackets or I'd lose that box. But yes, the edges will get worn, and there is a chance of them sticking to each other or getting ripped. I liked the article against book covers and as pointed out there's probably not much need for them, but the fact is that most books have very plain hardcover, and put all the nice graphics on the paper jacket, so it's an issue we have to deal with. |

Does the author of that article actually think dust jackets are meant to repel dust?
Anyway - my books are on a shelf in my office. I refer to them consistently, so I have no worry about them sticking to each other. Anyone who wanted to climb a ladder (my office is in a loft) could read them, but I find that very few people actually want to enter that space without my express invitation. I have serious doubts that any laymen would put effort into reading through a magic book. I know it's borderline blasphemy to say this, but magic secrets just aren't that interesting to anyone outside of magic, except maybe for those who have felt challenged by a magician to figure out a method. People don't read books in general these days, let alone what amounts to a technical manual.

My books are kept in my "magic library" away from the other books. I have several shelves with books throughout my home and the "magic books" are in my main office for reference at all times.

For those that have a local Dollar Tree store and want a way to display certain books, the Dollar Tree sells something called "Special Moments Metal Display Easels" that are only $1 and come in 3 different sizes and 3 different colors (black, gold & silver). Something I use regularly to display books. You can google them.

I have a couple local Dollar Trees so I will check these out. Are they similar to a "dish displayer" (I have seen these and wondered if they would display a book)? I have a couple odd size books like the "Memory Arts" and "The Long Goodbye" displayed differently on my bookshelf. Whatever book I am currently working with is "sort of" displayed on my desk seated in my book reader -
https://www.amazon.com/s?k=A%2B+Book+Sta......_sb_noss This really helps me read thru with "cards in hand" especially when learning a new sleight from the book. It was a great investment. Plus it makes a nice display.
