What would be the best magic set? What tricks would you have in it? What tricks do you wish were in your magic set when you got yours? Be realistic. Imagine you could walk into a department store tomorrow and see a set which you just had to have. What sort of tricks would make you buy it?
Dynamic Coins been done to death or is it a good trick? More exclusive magic? A wand? What trick etc etc... Always wondered about this.

I think the best Magic Set is the one that gets you interested, regardless of the tricks inside.
I was given 2 sets from the Marvins Magic Executive Collection and they were enough to get me hooked. Yes it had Dynamic Coins and yes it can still fool people. A Magic Set available to the public has to have just enough to make it interesting, but not enough to make that person want to find out more. I wouldn't buy a Magic Set if one were available for Magicians, as part of the fun for me in learning magic is finding and learning new items individually. In every beginners set, should be a deck of cards (perhaps a Svengali deck), enough self workers such as Dynamic Coins to keep them interested, with some extra instructions on tricks that can be done with everyday objects similar to those in Magic for Dummies. Is this for a future project Angelo?
When I was young, the best magic set I came across was the David Nixon Magic set. It stood out because it wasn't full of the usual very cheap plastic items (mostly cardboard items instead lol). Some of these new Marvin magic sets look good but give away too much I think. The content also depends on the age range one is aiming at I think. But regarding; "What sort of tricks would make you buy it?" It may be the way they are described rather than the actual prop contents. For instance, it could say on the box a selected card is torn up and you restore it. The method inside may be a flap card box. But having said that, the card box IS a good item to have in a magic set. As is the old Rising Wand. An item with the Out To Lunch principle perhaps, printed up so it is unique (maybe Big Ben on the cards). A straight deck of cards, a Svengali deck. A booklet giving some good easy card tricks plus good instructions on handling the Svengali deck with a list of classic magic books to buy for the seriously interested and list of magic clubs in the back. A packet trick with cards matching the latter two decks. A pull for vanishing a handkerchief (with small silk.) Siberian Chain Escape. A rope trick. A Colour Vision Box, where you can reveal which side of the coloured cube is upwards. The main things are how exciting the box looks and how good the instructions are, hopfully some of the standard items having new or at least slightly different presentations. Possibly all described as if routined into a small show. Items to get them thinking, and information to allow them to take the interest further if they wish. Of course if you were going to use plastic stuff, you could put an excellent magic set together simply by using selected Tenyo items. Paul |

Here's a GREAT place to get some of the most excellent magic kits:
http://www.magickits.com The owner of the site is Luis Villamonte. He's been my mentor for many years now, and is truly a top-notch performer! If you don't find one you like (very unlikely), then I'm sure that he could track down what you are looking for. Magically, - - Troy

Magic set would be nice, but I'm too worried about sleights right now.

Specifically what are some of the tricks they include in children's magic sets nowdays?
I have two children, 11 and 14 who want magic sets for Christmas. I just want them to get an exposure to magic and see if they want to go anywhere with it. So it probably needs to be stuff they can do fairly quickly, without being just a bunch of junk. I see several recommendations on The Magic Café, but want to get recommendations as to what tricks to look for on the box. Thanks Steve |

AJ has a really good one. I personaly wouldn't get one because they are so poorly made. It would be best to get a video that teaches newbie magic. Jay Sankey has one. Also, videos with card control are really good to.
Hope this helps |
