I'm looking for information regarding the history of cold reading.
Where that term come from? When it was first put in print? What is the first book published on the subject? Yaniv Deautsch |

I believe the term 'cold reading' comes from theatrical auditions when actors are required to read an unfamiliar script 'cold' (without a 'warm-up'). See:

It was your question on the history of the term that made me curious to hunt around on the Web for explanations. As far as I am aware, 'cold reading' has evolved from the theatrical meaning - but I am by no means certain that this is the true origin. Possibly someone else can trace it further back into the mists of time...? best wishes Huw |

I'm uncertain as to which direction you want to go with this querry... The term "Cold Reading" is relatively recent... I'd bet less than 100 years old. The principle and idea/practice of pigeon-holing and categorizing people into a given set of nitches the way so much canned material tends to do (see Herb Dewey's "Psycho Babble" for a bunch of examples) dates back eaons... You can start with looking at Astrology and how/why it evolved as an esoteric science e.g. learned men noticed similarities in persons born during certain times of year, etc. Similarly, it became known that people from one part of the world had certain kinds of dispositions vs. those from another region, etc. I don't think yuo'll find one primary date... it is something that evolved as humanity and society unfolded and we learned how to observe one another. Hope this helps

I've been trying to see if I can find some version of 'cold reading' in one of the more venerable pieces of English Literature which feature mind-readers or clairvoyants such as Ben Jonson's Jacobean comedy, The Alchemist or Farquhar's Restoration comedy, The Recruiting Officer. I haven't turned up anything yet. I'll keep looking though and let you know if I can find some concrete reference. best wishes Huw |
