I have a Dean's box and have learned the basic routine that came with the video. The effect is great, but the patter seems a little bland to me. Has anyone developed better patter to go with this excellent effect?
Thanks-- Flimnar

Have you performed the effect in a live show? What was their reaction?

Just think and dream about it... Dan LeFay has the best routine/premise I have seen, so it is possible to come up with something good.
It may take time and many many performances. I had a trick that took me three years of steady performing before I hit on the best presentation.

Here are a few "brainstormed" ideas:
1. What is the box made of? Is the wood some special wood with magical properties? Is the shape of the box significant? Do the holes in the side lead to another dimension or time warp that isn't obvious looking through the front door? Was the box owned by someone of note? Can you think of any fables, fairy tales, allegories, or other stories that use a box of some sort (The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe) or an entrance (Alice in Wonderland)? 2. What can the rope represent? Was someone once bound by it who escaped and cursed it? Do the colors of the ropes represent anything significant? 3. Is the ring enchanted? Does the ring/box combination hold special properties that neither alone posess? 4. Can you think of stories of escapes, daring or otherwise, that can be connected with the routine? Just a few thoughts... Amos McCormick

Thanks Amos, that's a help. This offers a
place to start thinking about the presentation. Flimnar

This is a 400 year old antique mystery box... that by pure luck I was able to buy on the Home Shopping Network. It came with a set of 40 Ginsu Knives, two food choppers and a car wash kit... all for $9.99 plus three hundred dollars shipping and handling.
It was a Jack in the Box box, but Jack took off and hasn't been seen yet. Probably went after Jill.

I like the idea of Dean's Box as a mini "spirit cabinet". There are countless other possibilities with the box

Another thought - with the popularity of "The Matrix", this might be another good place to start.

Pete,
You're a funny dude. I like your story. I've got the box and it's awesome. I do the standard routine. I found the box in the attic and it's haunted. The trick fools everyone, especially magicians. Heck, I fooled Marshall Brodien with it. I felt bad and had to show him how it worked. Other than Dean himself, I'd say Lupe Neilson does the best routine. She makes it fun and is just amazing. Sometimes the whole table starts to float. I saw her do it at a Florida convention one time. It was almost scary! Steve |

I mentioned this before, I offer anyone who has Dean's Box some notes from me on the routine. No presentations but little refinements I found while working with it and demoing it. PM me if you're interested.
