First of all, don't be ashamed. Lesson learned. Some lessons we learn the hard way.
I just went to record a performance in a local Poker Club here as a marketing strategy. I'm going on TV and I'm setting material for when the time comes. My idea was to do mentalism with cards, with local poker champions. The thing is, those guys are skeptical, reactionless and intimidating. No wonder they're the champions. I haven't seem the footage yet, but I'm not sure if I can use the material. The very thing that I didn't like is that they're reactionless. They might be scared and even admit it, but they hide it and don't react! I was like "wtf...". But thinking about it later, there's a point where I say for them to not react (because that would actually help me) and they might have took it very seriously for the entire thing. I'm thinking about going there again and giving it another try with another perspective. In your case, I think it was a matter of bad communication. Things must be very clear before the event so there are no surprises during the event. That's exactly why I said this: Quote:
If you can, check the place before... not only this will bring familiarity with what you're going to face when it's not crowded (which could make it much harder to understand the enviroment), but also will help you plan routes and even use the ambient in your favor (even a pool table can be a great platform for your work). Now, my advice to you is this: 1) Think about exactly what you think went wrong and why. Then think about how to avoid it next time. (e.g. situation you will be, approaching people, dealing with not being introduced, etc) 2) Think about what positive aspects you can milk from this event. For instance, did you take pictures with the celebrities? (if you had the oportunity and didn't, you're not quite listening to advices here) 3) If you're too nice or rely blindly on your agent, there's a chance you eventually will be set for a bad situation. Be proactive and stand for yourself. Learn to be your own agent. Cheers

Thanks for sharing your experience! Hopefully, you can take away some good lessons here, and also heed the advice from some of these terrific forum members such as David Thiel. Best of luck for your next performance.

If you're new to strolling and aren't sure how to transition from group to group, sometimes it's helpful to playfully ask the current group who you should see next. They'll often excitedly pick targets for you in another group (e.g., "Heather's gotta see this! There she is!"). This helps you flow from group to group. Sometimes you'll even get an icebreaker/introduction as the person from the first group introduces you to next group. It allows you to feel more like a member of an in-group rather than an outsider attempting to awkwardly make conversation. This is pure gold!

Jumping in on this older post after my walk around gig tonight.
I spent a lot of time procrastinating about what I was going to do. It was a function in a high end business. A networking event for business types. I felt so silly as I walked around the room of fine suited business people with my pack of cards in my pocket. I went and dumped them in my bag and just had spellmans gallery instead. So what I learnt from that situation is, if I'm going to have cards, I'll have the gallery as they are pics and make more sense for mentalism than cards. I mainly did straight forward mind reads with gallery and Psyher and prediction using equvoc. My other bit if advice I will take into my next gig is be in the room as people arrive for drink reception. Get going when there are like three groups. Far less intimidating than walking into a room of fifty people. You get going, warm up, by the time more people arrive you are on your flow and approach groups better. Hope that helps someone if even only myself haha |
