Hi All: I am not sure if this topic has come up before or not. Many of us already have a set of aluminum or brass Cups and Balls or a combo chop cup set. Plus- plastic Cups and Balls can be inexpensively made up or purchased sometimes at our local Dollar Tree to be used to teach kids their first magic routine.
What made me think of this is watching Paul Gertner's excellent Cups and Balls routine using different sized large heavy solid steel ball bearings on a recent episode of Penn and Teller's "Fool Us" television show. Any good Biblical Gospel magic routines/patter out there that is in the public domain and can be shared here for use with the Cups and Balls trick? |

Anyone who is a current FCM member has access to the library of the members only section at FCM.org -- you will find a transcript by Oz and Wilde for Gospel Street Magic: Cups and Balls.

Hi Jamie:I can't figure out how to get to this article off FCM website, even after putting in my membership ID, etc.. Where exactly is the link to the membership only area? Is my phone going to an old site- shows Steve Varro as President, etc.. Dazed and Confused I guess...

Wow! I already printed out this terrific 17 page super detailed routine by Oz and Wilde- every single cup move is thoroughly illustrated- just fantastic.
Then I found right by it at the same FCM publications area another Oz and Wilde's 3 page routine on the paralyzed man (Matthew 9: 1-8) using the "story sticks" prop- I have been looking for something like this ever since I saw a dealer do "The Rich Young Ruler" story at a FCM convention long ago using a folding contractor's ruler. I bought his DVD but misplaced it someplace. "Story Sticks" are a great prop for Sunday School use, I don't know if any U.S. magic dealers still sell it. Looks like online there are contractor's folding yardsticks that have only four sections which could act as "story sticks"- I am going to probably buy the LUFKIN 524 Doyle Log Folding Rule, Length 48 In, through www.walmart.com for $13.40 and see if that ruler will work as "story sticks". I can always paint it one color if the ruler numbers on it are too distracting. It appears from the online ad at least that this folding ruler has only four sections to it--- which the Oz and Wilde "Story of the Paralyzed Man" uses (four attached sticks). I like the "locking" features of a contractor's folding ruler. Thanks again Jamie- much appreciated! |

Looks like Barney Kinnard with the LAFCM is working on a resource and the story sticks prop - he just posted about it on Facebook

Jamie: Do you know where one can buy a set of "story sticks"? I think this is a great prop- would love to try it out. Probably better than using a contractor's ruler? I would love to buy Mr. Kinnard's resource- I think this prop could be used over and over for a number of stories.
I do miss Kif's posts on The Magic Café'- just a wonderful magician and sharing/caring man. |

Along the same lines as the original post- any Gospel routines for the Chop Cup? Many magic dealers have multiple models with all kinds of styles and sizes- just not sure if I have seen a Gospel routine for that particular well known prop as well. www.LaflinMagicStore.com has a "stage size" chop cup on their site. Midwest Magic in Illinois has many styles and loads on its web site as does Penguin Magic, Daytona Magic, Abbott's, etc.. I would think there could be a final load for the standard routine that could fit in with a Bible story or theme- such as producing a "globe" or "world" theme (baseball sized) ball at the end... Any thoughts?

An idea would be to use the wood chop cup (sold by Midwest Magic) where the feather flower is produced as the final load- could tied into a Noah's Ark theme? The "people" (crochet balls) in the wooden ark (wood chop cup) were protected- and the story concludes with the dove bringing an olive branch sprig (feather flower) to show Noah and family that they would be safe and the water was receding... (this application may be a little far fetched).
Or that the promises of God are not just one time promises- we can rely on them countless times in our lives (vanishing/reappearing ball sequence) which is a beautiful blessing not only for ourselves and but for others as well (flower appears at the end). Since many of us already have a chop cup or cups and balls set, would be great to learn about some solid Biblical illustrations they might be usable for. If not, that's ok too. Some tricks really are not easily usable (in my mind) for Gospel use- like the Zombie ball or Zig Zag illusion or many card or mind reading tricks. But who knows... I could not believe the terrific Gospel illustration Dr. Jerry Burgess had when I saw him lecture in Colon using an Abbott's Tortuette mini-illusion. |

Regarding "story sticks", see the June 3, 2013 post on The Magic Café' topic entitled "The Rich Young Ruler". Glad to read Jamie that a new book/resource may be coming out using story sticks- I know they kept my interest when I saw them demonstrated at the FCM convention in Marion.

The chaps at Mission Magic in the UK had some available at one time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCBxmtsUaKc However, when searching their site, they don't show up where they're supposed to
I sent them an email to inquire. |

Here is a cups and balls routine in a 1967 issue of the voice (it' currently not available on fcm.org) If the moderators will allow it, I will post only the text here:
From The July/August 1967 Christian Conjuror Magazine ELWYN CAREY'S SCRAPBOOK: A Cups and Balls Routine Effect: Standard CUPS & BALLS, where balls penetrate solid cups. Sells for about $1.00. Message: Each of the cups represents a temptation in the life of a famous Bible character. The THREE balls represent the men --RED goes with the first martyr, STEPHEN;; YELLOW with PAUL; BLUE with JOB. Stephen was not afraid to lose his life - to shed blood for the Lord. Paul's big- gest temptation was probably cowardice. He was beaten, shipwrecked, rejected by the churches he had founded, taken ill, thrown in jail, and faced martyrdom constantly. Job was faced with disaster and disease - he could easily have discouraged. Yet, they were all sup- plied with ,grace to see them thru their temptations.TheJ]. weren't taken around, over or under their temptations(visually illustrate this), but brought thru them. Tell how God is faithful, "who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able, but will with the temptation also provide a way of escape, that ye may be able to bear it." As each man is brought thru his problem, you can give the particulars of his case. When all three balls have penetrated, you may produce the fourth ball, by use of "wuffle dust." Tell how people feel God doesn't care about them, but God sees even the sparrow when it falls, so we know he will care for us. And even though we may feel as "infinitesimally insignificant" as the wuffle dust in your hand, if we stick by God, and are in His will, he will bring us thru our troubles and temptations. We, too, can be GREAT Christians as these men of the past, as we let God be our Guide in these tremendous days. Lift up cups, and all four balls will be there. |

After doing a quick search I found (although I don't own these books) there are chop cup or cups and balls gospel routines in the following books:

Thanks Jamie for the 1967 routine above, much appreciated. I will be using the routine some day in Sunday School with an inexpensive set of different colored cups (the red white and blue combo chop / cups and balls set available from Midwest Magic)- and in most sets like this one the balls are mostly the same color.
I think a modified patter will work with that as well. I really like the idea of the Bible characters (and us as well) balls "passing through" different hardships represented by the three different colored cups. Then at the end, some kind of final load will be produced- maybe five small crowns (if I can find them) representing the crowns awarded for faithfulness: the incorruptible crown (1 Corinthians 9:25) for those who live disciplined life; the crown of life (James 1:12) for those who patiently endure trials and testings; the crown of glory (I Peter 5:2-4) for those who faithfully care for the flock; the crown of righteousness (2 Timothy 4:8) for those who love his appearing; and the crown of rejoicing (I Thessalonians 2:19-20) for all who are faithful soul wineers. See Study 9 (Series 25 Bible Studies) The Soul-Winner's Reward from www.wordsoflife.co.uk by Francis Dean. The "Kingdom VBS Crown Stress Toys" might each fit into a final load cup- available at Oriental Trading www.orientaltrading.com # IN-13583665 - but may be too large- may have cut them down- we'll see. |

Follow up on the Lufkin folder ruler above- it has eight folding segments, not four.
But this ruler still can easily work for "Story Sticks" illustrations by either keeping the end segments all together as "one" stick, or, one can simply break off four ruler segments (which are not used for the Oz and Wilde four story stick routine- their routine only uses four connected hinged sticks). I would suggest snapping off both of the end segments of the ruler anyway, as the end pieces only hinge in one direction- downward. The middle wooden measuring segments of the Luftkin folding ruler hinge both up and down. Or hinging the end pieces together so get it down to four "working" sticks works easy as well. There may be other Gospel story stick routines out there that use a full 8 part folding contractor's ruler, I do not know. But with my set, I carefully removed off/detached two wooden segments from each end, leaving four connected "story sticks" which hinge and stay hinged in any up or down direction. Can't wait to use it! |

The folding ruler looks much better colored brown by a brown Marks-A-Lot marker. Jamie- thanks again for steering me to the "Story of the Paralyzed Man" by Oz and Wilde using "story sticks" posted on the FCM "Members Only" area. Their routine is just BRILLIANT I think- I am going to use their routine this Sunday before showing the kids the DVD segment "The Paralyzed Man" from "Speed Sketch Bible Stories: Stories of Jesus in Luke" (available at www.CBD.com ).
I just love "story sticks"- and am looking forward to reviewing any future Gospel routine book/booklet that may come out using this simple prop. A real winner- it will keep the kids' attention for sure. |

Got my "Relaxable Crowns" from www.orientaltrading.com - you get 12 of them for about $18.96 delivered. Item number IN-13583665 described as "Mighty Kingdom Crown Stress Toy". You can squeeze one tightly into your cup loading fist unseen, and once a crown is jammed into a cup, it expands and stays in the cup hidden even when lifted. Pretty neat!
Not as easy to load as a larger sized ball into the cup, but it still works for this Gospel routine. My little close up table provides the "cover" for this final load. I can keep all kinds of things in the bottom portion of my folding little table (including three crowns) case unseen- the lid of which acts as the table performing top. Anyway, this "final crown" load actually is feasible (see above routine description). On the back of the yellow crown it states "GOD leads the way!", and the front part of this collapsible crown has a cross on it. Perfect! Another sidebar- the Red White and Blue Combo Chop Cups and Balls set I obtained from Midwest Magic has three balls with opposite magnet shims in them (as well as other balls gimicked so that they stick to the inside of the cup). So these other provided balls stick to the TOP of the chop cup. So that means if you have a ball sitting on the top of the chop cup during the routine, you can take apart the cups with the ball going hidden from the top of the stacked chop cup (for example) right into a hidden finger palm. What a great feature, very easy to do! Even though I am not much of a slight of hand guy, this "Red White and Blue" chop cup combo outfit allows me to show all three cups EMPTY after the ball has passed from the stacked cup to below the bottom cup. That little bit adds a lot to the mystery of the cups and balls and some kids may have deducted there is an extra ball still being hidden in one of the cups after a ball movement/pass through takes place. Hope you can use these ideas by Jamie and others- so glad I posted the original question here- as it has now evolved to a Gospel application routine I am looking to try out in a few weeks in kids Sunday School. I may in the future if I get around to it post here the entire final routine. But it will be based on what Jamie posted above for sure (three Bible characters "passing through" three different kinds of hardship) which God sees and ultimately later rewards with -siting from the Bible verses above- and the crown(s) as the final load(s) to illustrate those points. I am not sure if I can do more than one final crown load comfortably yet based on my limited skill level. But one crown final load for sure will be quite simple to master/include in this Gospel routine for sure. |

FYI on the last post: I found that cutting the back half off on the final three load crowns are much easier to hide in the palm. Yet these modified spongey type crowns still expand immediately when loaded into a cup. Logical ending to this Gospel routine.

A magic trick that seems to naturally fit up for an adult Gospel routine is the "Light and Heavy Chest". I will post my routine for it here on The Magic Café' within a month under a new topic heading. This obvious application routine is what I will be using for an upcoming program at a nearby large "senior living" complex.
My interest in the "light and heavy box" was renewed by seeing 8 year old Issy Simpson fool Simon with it recently on "Britain's Got Talent" on YouTube. Just wondering, any "kids" Gospel routines out there that can be shared here for use with a "light and heavy chest" or box effect? I already have Barry Mitchell's fine clear small box routine ("Magic Box" as Barry calls it)- have used that before with kids to good response. I am now referring above to a standard "light and heavy" chest Gospel routine for kids which uses a standard table for the chest to rest on (or the chest can be placed on the floor). |
