I'm not sure why these ideas strike me at hours such as this, but I was just thinking I'd like to start a Café choose your own adventure story. I would start a story and if someone had an idea of where they'd like to take it, they would post a link to a thread of their own, continuing the story the way they'd like it to go. Could continue with a new scenario or stay following mine but from another character's point of view. I would continue with my own version. Again a writer could join in by posting a link to their own tangent at any point. Just put up a link and readers can follow it if/when they choose. This way each writer has opportunity to voice his/her vision.I think it could be an interesting writing and creative exercise. What say ye?

Well, I don't hear any objections, so I'll take that as all in favour!
I'm thinking Hallowe'en themed, so there's no time to lose- I'm going to start writing soon and y'all can tag along or otherwise actively participate (write! ) if ye so choose. *************** *************** |

Alice in wonderland springs to mind: at hours such as this, we tend to dream.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Do yourself a favor and check it out. Reading is better because most screen adaptations will cut out the poetry and some of the word play wants mulling and savoring.
Full of wonderful word play and memorable snatches of whimsey. "Through the Looking Glass" is not quite as much fun but has some great bits as well. The poetry alone is worth the read. Both are great for reading a little at a time. -Mary Mowder |

I recently saw "Hocus Pocus" ... again. What a great (and silly) Hallowe'en story. Lots of tongue in cheek stuff about witch stereotypes, and magic spells. Zombies get to be the good guys (who wants to be dug up from the grave?)! The real history of Salem 'witches' of course is awful; but since we're writing the script.... Lynn

The heavy wooden door flew open wide and magicalaurie, with a glow about her (emanating from the establishment's ever-lit ie.OPEN 24 HOURS neon signage), ducked into the Magic Café.
"Shut the door!" someone shouted from the bar. "Magicalaurie likes a walk in the rain, but thunder and lightning's a different story, eh you guys? Come on, it's relatively safe and sound in here," she said. "Shut the door!" the voice bellowed once more. Laurie took no notice. She held the door for her companions as they entered- nine black cats, each soaked to the skin and rimlit in fluorescent green. Once across the threshold, they shook large drops from feet and faces, then rested gratefully on the thick "Welcome"ing rug. A quick headcount indicated all were present. Magicalaurie closed the door. |

"O.k. Come with me, now," she alerted the cats.
Laurie ventured forward from the long rug, setting dry feet on the gleaming hardwood but leaving a distinct trail of droplets nonetheless. The rain dripped: from her dark locks; her drenched autumn-hued- and short-sleeved- flower-patterned dress; and also from the guitar she carried on her back- with its vibrant red strap slung over her right shoulder. The neck and strings were exposed but the main body of the guitar was covered with black plastic-an inverted trash bag through which the guitar neck and strap had been shoved at the onset of the downpour. Sparkling raindrops trickled down the slick plastic guitar poncho, forming streamlets that slid gaily to the floor in magicalaurie's wake. One by one, the felines followed- remaining in single file, with happy tails raised- dancing delightedly to dodge petite puddles. Laurie walked with purpose, Enter(ing the enormous, green-walled) dining room and continuing directly through to a quiet corner in the back. Here was magicalaurie's booth. With a grin and a glance over her shoulder, "Polly, put the kettle on, we'll all have tea!" said she. |

Laurie raised her arms and drew open a pair of long dark curtains, which acted as a sort of doorway to the elegant booth. As she did so, the large metal bangle she wore on her left arm dropped to her elbow and with it clinked and clanked a slew of iron skeleton keys.
The booth accessible, Laurie crouched to the floor, easing the guitar gently from her right shoulder while dropping the keys onto the glorious deer tapestry which lay under the table. She tore the trash bag away and let it fall to the floor while she slid the guitar's sleek black body in beside the pile of iron. Then, she picked up the keys, and, with lightning-fast speed, selected one and brought it to the base of the seat on her right. The nature carved panel contained two keyholes- one in its far side and one in the bottom. Laurie inserted the key into each of them in succession and the door popped open gently. She reached in and brought out a fistful of fabric- dry clothing. Meanwhile, the cats took up assorted positions in the booth. A few of them lay with the deer and guitar under the table, while others selected spacious segments of the luxurious seats. Master Zorro, the eldest at 18.5 years, placed himself precisely and precariously on the table's front edge. Laurie tucked the outfit under one arm and turned and tossed the trash bag into a nearby garbage can. "You guys wait here. I'll be right back, k? Then we'll get some supper." |

She returned shortly, having exchanged one fistful of clothing for another. Magicalaurie now wore her "Camptown Races" dress and a large, loose fitting, white crepe shirt- with wide ecru-crocheted bell sleeves- over top. Beneath the flowing blouse, a printed pair of horses could be seen, each wearing a leather bridle and peering over a wooden box stall door.
(Black)Irish, one of the youngest- at one year of age- of the magicats, was close at Laurie's heels, having followed her (as magicalaurie knew she would ) expediently to the washroom. Laurie, clutching her wet clothes in one hand, crossed a fair distance to the nearest table. Irish tagged along, eyes wide, still a very keen learner, indeed. Laurie reached the table and, looking down at her feet to take note of the young cat's position, deftly raised a chair and swung back in the direction of her quarters. Just past her booth stood the back wall of the Magic Café, and built into the center of it was a grand stone fireplace, surrounded by: a rather large woodpile; a hearth broom; bellows; a rustic dustpan; and various other memorabilia. She set the chair down several feet in front of the open hearth and arranged the crumpled clothing neatly across its frame. She found the box of long wooden matches on the mantle and removed one. Suddenly something caught her eye in the corner of her field of vision. She turned to address it directly. "You Have A Private Message!" the figure- adorned colourfully in assorted greens with complementary red accent- whispered mysteriously. Laurie quietly accepted and the figure was gone. |

The paper that was handed to to her was worn like an old document from years past, the page had been folded so many times deep groves were permantly emobossed across it's face. She felt a rush of excitement wondering what words of wisdom would be present. A thought entered her mind from weeks before when she had consulted with the great oracle from Ruston and well the answers had not come to her and the oracle had told her to be patient. So of course, this must be what she had been waiting for. The pure elation and bright eyed wonder she was feeling came crashing down as she began scrolling across the heading of the page. LIMITED TIME ONLY!!!! it read in big bold print, yet another advertisment. She could barely stomach to continue reading. Why must I always feel drawn in by the pagentry of presentation, she thought.

Laurie struck the long wooden match against stone , crushed the paper, and drew the match to it. It having caught, she knelt and tossed the flaming ball into the open hearth, quickly reached for some kindling to sprinkle over it, then placed a couple larger pieces of dry timber close to the flames. Young Irish stared with wonder at the crackling, shimmering fire. "Careful, now, you guys. Not too close, now, k? Can be dangerous. Come with me, Irish. Let's get supper." |

The lights flickered, then went out. Momentarily, a shrill whistling pierced the air.
"Sounds like the ELECTRIC whistling tea kettle to me." stated Magicalaurie. A chorus of laughter and a "Good try, man!" muffled a dejected, "***!" and the lights were back. Laurie safely deposited the meal on the table. "I'll be right there for my tea." |

Having set the food down on the unoccupied table, Laurie looked around to see where Master Zorro and the rest of the lot had got to. Her eyes settled on the fireplace. There they were, lined up, sitting on the mantle, staring back at her. All except Zorro, who lay precisely precariously on the edge of the ledge.
Laurie recalled the tribe of turkey buzzards she'd once seen perched on a rusted barn roof in the pouring rain. |

"Hey guys... Zorro..."
She approached the mantle, reaching for the elderly cat, and laid her hands on him. "Zorro, sweetheart, we can't have you falling in the fire." She peeled him from the mantle and carried him back to the booth. Irish looked up from a sandwich as Laurie set Zorro down on the table beside her. Magicalaurie looked back at the rest. "Suppertime. Look, we've got chicken. See? Come on Blackberry, sweetheart. That's it. There ya go. Honi, over here. That's right. Kuuipo. Come on Presley, that a boy..." Soon she was surrounded. "You can have this one, too, k?" She handed over the last sandwich. Eat your food, now." She left them to it while she returned to The Buffet for the tea. |
