Walked into Walgreens this evening and saw a bunch of Stud decks. They had been gone for several years now. I wonder are they back? Has anyone else spotted them recently? Looked at Walgreens.com and they are not listed on there. If I just got lucky I am going to have to go back and scoop them up. Quality cards - handle nicely and so durable.

They're back. Newly printed. The date on the bottom of the box says "2017."

Any difference from the design or quality?

That's a good news.

I saw then Sunday (the 22nd) and there was a buy-one-get-one-free sale. Maybe still going...

The originals, bright red and blue colors, not the brownish red and dark blue of the second generation? Which reminds me. I loved the original Aristocrats and Fan Backs from Bicycle. In the reissues of the Aristocrats there again the red was more maroon. And the cards completely different. I wonder if there is some relationship between the two changes in color and decline in quality of both the Aristocrats and Stud cards?

Much thicker stock, not very flexible and generally not very nice to handle, unfortunately.

I’ve had to begrudgingly substitute these with Aviators while the Studs have been out of production. Using Stud brand cards works better in my script than Aviators for certain reasons.

I just stopped at Walgreens on my way home from getting some tests at the hospital today and grabbed two packs. They do not feel the same to me as the older ones. The 2017 Studs do have a stiffer feel like a new pack of regular bikes. The older ones always felt almost “pre-worn” to me. The new ones will require a break in period like most other decks. The back colors match my old Studs almost perfectly though and they still claim the “Linen Finish” on the box. (I personally never noticed a difference between Linen and Air-Cushion finishes so no difference to me). Also noteworthy, the borders are off a bit like most bikes you buy at Walmart these days. You do get two full matching jokers in the deck. The two “extra cards” in my decks were the rules of Texas Holdem (very basic) and a “Poker Guide” with an example of each hand shown in color (kind of a nice card for doing gambling routines for someone who may not gamble a lot or at all). Another good point - they did Faro perfectly on first try.
All in all, to me, it feels like they just tossed the artwork into the pile of regular bikes and printed away.

Hey, PD...you might check another Walgreens - they are not consistent in what they carry and the prices between stores, for some odd reason. I have two near me and the price on the decks were something like 50 cents cheaper at one store - same decks, lower prices. Weird.
I thought I saw the Studs were also BOGO, but I may have been wrong...that's been known to happen every decade or so. |

Camping supplies has them at $3.99 I was told different depts have different prices. Stores as well (especially Pharmacy and Tire/Lube). This Walgreens is the only one I have ever been to. The next closest is 30+ miles away in a direction I rarely travel. Luckily, Studs are only $2.99 reg so I don't really mind spending that much. What is weird is, the ones they had BOGO were black tigers, steampunk, archangels and other decks I wouldn't think your average card player would buy.

Just a couple days in and corners are splitting from doing Faro shuffles. Even with cheap bikes I get more use before this starts. Could just be a fluke as only the red deck is splitting as of now. (I have a habit of sitting around doing groups of 8 Faros in a row over and over casually while sitting around watching tv. Have done this for years, almost more of an OCD than a mere habit)
