I'm looking for an ironwood wand, the same kind that Cellini uses. I saw his video and thought that his tips on using that type of wand are excellent, banging on tables, cups, small children etc. Anyone know of a place that sells them, or a shop that sells ironwood itself? The prices here in town are outrageous ($30 a foot for a 3/8" diameter). I also am interested in the wand that Whit Haydn used when he worked the steet. Its leather wrapped and studded. Anyone that has his street magic notes can look on the back cover and knows what I'm talking about.

IF you can get an ironwood (lignum vitae) wand 3/8" diameter for 30 bucks, you'd better jump on it. It's important to know that every region has what they refer to as "ironwood" which means nothing more than it's an odd wood that happens to be the most dense wood around (in some regions they refer to oak as ironwood). Unless the species is LIGNUM VITAE then it is not the true ironwood that Cellini uses. In bulk the wood sells for approx. $25 a pound, rife with knots and cracks. AND as THE ironwood doesn't float in water, it happens to be THE most dense wood around so paying by the pound for a block of wood can get really costly.
That all being said, Lignum Vitae isn't the best wood to make a magic stick out of, depending of course on your intended application. If you want to use it the way Cellini does, then I'd suggest you look for a wood that is a little more elastic, while retaining some dense qualities. Funny you mentioned Whit's leather stick, I've been making some wands that were covered with braided leather -- much like a caballero's quirt, or riding crop. Broke one of my ironwood wands trying out the durability of the leather -- leather did fine, wand *****tered (dense, but incredibly brittle). If I were you, I'd just get some oak and start whittling. |

Alternatively, try your local music shop, and ask for a practice drumstick. These are sticks that are the same thickness at both ends, rather than with a bead at one end, for drumming. They're usually very strong (John "Bonzo" Bonham used them, and he was a bruiser!), and cheap, too!
Gazzo, the great street magician, uses them exclusively. |

I don't know where to get Ironwood but Shamrock Magic and Collectibles makes wands out of some exotic woods that would probably substitute quite nicely.
If you have ever felt Cocobolo wood, you would know that it is very hard and heavy and I think would be the type of wood your looking for.

Hey, after lunch I checked out the music store. They had some gorgeous drum sticks that were quite heavy, sold them in pairs, nice wood, just like GothicBen talked about a couple posts back.
They were $6 a pair and really looked great and felt great too. The only issue was that the ones they had at this store ALL had advertising logos on the sticks which I didn't like. It appears that the logos could be easily sanded off with some, oh, say, sandpaper. Great tip!!!!!!! 1 beer for you! Then again, one post later... I've been looking for a 2 piece magic wand and sure enough Shamrock Magic and Collectibles has that too. With solid brass ends and a very sturdy center twisty connector thingy. 1 beer for Kaliix too. Woo hoo. I'm in wand heaven now.

I just recommended James Riser's web site regarding cups and balls. While I was there I noticed he had a page dedicated to custom turned wooden wands. It might be worth a look.

I got a lovely lignum vitae wand from alivans. They sell harry potter style wands but have a few ' conjourors' wands'
the one I got was just the right length for me to flipstick. heavy though, your fingers get quite a workout. |

Gazzo uses drum sticks...right ...true...BUT if you want to do any kind of spins or maybe slapstick then I would suggest you get a stick that's a little shorter and a little thiner....and HEAVY!
its easier to use and hold out something in your hands with a smaller wand....and the weight of a say coco stick is much heavier than the wood they ue for a drum stick....i have some really beautiful sticks if anyone is interested in the, send me a pm. I prefer the smaller shorter stick.... |

There are a number of different woods called "ironwood." Lignum vitae is one of them. It has an odd characteristic in that it secretes a greasy substance that makes it very slippery. It was used in the past as a low friction bearing surface for sailing ships. Ropes could pass over it very smoothly. It is also denser than water. I think the wands that come with the Phoenix cups are made of this wood.

Kozmo,
I'm with you there. I wanted a wand which I could flipstick, spin, use for c&b, hit stuff with and which looked and felt special. A drum stick didn't fit my requirements. 13" is perfect for me to flip, everyone's different though on that score though. I've read that there are 3 kinds of wood which get called lignum vitae and 1 or 2 are protected species now. Interesting that Eric says it can be brittle. I'll have to be more careful. When you look at the grain of the wood you can see how densely knitted together it is. Quite beautiful. |

To quote Gazzo: "It's NOT a wand, it's a stick! Ferries have wands, okay?"
However, I got a nice "Ironwood" wand/stick with my Phoenix cups. Sir Richard.

I ended up getting the wand for 15$. I was a very happy camper that night! Now I've got 2 ("I don't ordinarily tell everyone I've got 2, but you guys look alright...")

Here's a pic of some of Kozmo's wands. They are made from cocobolo to his specs. Picture doesn't do them justice. If your interested just get in touch with Kozmo. I just sent him another batch.
