Once I have saved enough for practicing anything involving folding, tearing, and burning cards, I take them in sets of 12 or 24 to the local retirement home.

I keep them. SOmetimes I need single cards for something, or I can practice throwing or boomeranging them.

Jokers become bookmarks. If a deck is still in decent shape, I will take a box (of 100 or so) to local shelters and hospitals to donate them. If some of the cards are in really good shape but maybe a couple to a few got wet in a bar or bent up pretty bad by a layman doing a horrible job shuffling, (again in a bar ). I save the really good ones in my "Gaff Box" to be used in the future.
Really bad or super used decks go right into the trash (we have recycle dumpsters in town for plastic and for cardboard / paper) I toss them in there inside a cardboard box. We do not have mandatory recycling but a recycling company provides them at no cost so I am happy to donate the extra weight. I have always looked at card decks as a business expense and buy in bulk to save money. Every gig since day one has had "at least" $10 added for "expendable items" like rubber bands, cards, markers, balloons (when I used to twist a bit)... and I often leave the decks behind erasing all doubt that they were anything but normal cards (meaning I ditch my gaffs first) .

I give them to my kids to use for their practice or use them for playing card games.

There's no one purpose for them. Sometimes I fold them, sometimes I tear them. Probably what I use them for most is cutting them up and building them into crappy gimmicks and props to test an idea out before fully committing with new cards or other materials

I give all signed cards to the spectator, so I end up with partial decks. I have about 3 decks worth of replacement cards. I "rebuild" my partial decks. I also practice my Mercury card folds with some of the "spent' cards. I also have 3 parrots and they like to chew up cards.

Cards suffer, but usually my cardboxes are in pretty good shape, so I keep them - in another box , silly, no? - then I have them handy to build gimmicks....

I sometimes end a routine with an old deck and then give it away. What would be considered a "dead deck" to a magician might still seem in good repair for a little boy, or for (GASP!!!!) Card games!!!
Did you know people actually play games with them?! |

A search of "Old Cards" from 2 years back tells me that the topic has been a subject that has been on magicians' minds for a LONG time! It's good we ask ourselves this question. If we asked our spouses (or even strangers), they would bring the recycling cans right around! Some of the pros have thousands of decks around (check out the Richard Turner documentary, and watch your head spin). I must admit, I DO love this topic! We'll visit it time and time again! Lynn

I keep a shoebox of old decks. I use them for:
- practicing T&R, MCF, or effects where you write all over cards - practicing fundamentals like dealing seconds and bottoms, full deck controls, DPS where I want to be able to work with cards in all kinds of conditions If theres room in the shoebox, old decks go to the shoebox. If the shoebox is full, old decks go to the recycling bin. I found out a few years ago that its easy to have old decks fill up your house, so now I have a bounded amount of space I'm willing to donate to old cards. |
