Hello,
I realise this is an old one but I’m just wondering if anyone can guide me in the right direction to purchase a ‘needle through arm’ effect. The only version I’ve explored is the Harry Anderson effect but I’m on the fence to spend the extra money on the Viking version as I’ve heard some great things about it, I’m assuming it’s the same method but with an improved needle? Any options would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks and happy Christmas! Chris |

Is it necessary to produce the blood for your routine or just the skewer? If you need to do just the skewer I find the stat needles work just fine. If blood, most any of the versions on the market will work. There are also penetration effects not using any needles. You just need to define what your goal is and whether you want to include a shock factor or just the wow factor. Just remember the props are just tricks, it is up to you to produce the effect.

Stat is a good alternative, it comes with everything you need and the special something is in sealed antiseptic packets used to clean the area.
I have my own version using voodoo/Hoodoo needles. |

Thank you very much for the replies!
Whilst the blood would be a nice touch it isn't entirely necessary as I'd planned to do this in the middle of an act that is primarily mentalism so in some respect the lack of blood may work best. I love the idea of the special something being concealed in an antiseptic packet rather than on a towel etc, just seems to make sense! Thanks again for taking the time to help me out Chris |

You can get the same effect by simply having a bit of red food coloring on a portion of a handkerchief that is in your pocket. After you stick the needle in, say _ "Uh oh, I'm losing control. There's blood." Grab the handkerchief, press it on the "wound" make a face like you are trying to control your body and make the flow of blood stop (whatever the heck THAT looks like!). Then slowly remove the handkerchief and announce that you have gained control. Keep the control "thing" going until you remove the needle and show your arm "healed" and sealed. Be prepared to deal with screamers and fainters in the audience.

So far so good, however, as I am also thinking about purchasing one that does produce blood I would like to know if the Viking version is really so much superior to let's say the Anderson version?

I was about to purchase the Harry Anderson version until I noticed there was also a 'deluxe' version. For some reason I thought both versions had the same style of bulb so leaking is prevented however it seems this may not be the case?
I'm absolutely buying some Stat packets but I'm still struggling with which needle to purchase out of the Anderson, Anderson deluxe and Viking model I don't suppose if anyone knows if both versions of the Anderson needle have a 'screw off' bulb and if so what the actual differences are? Thanks again |

I have only used the stats and Anderson's version so I probably am not much help. I would think it might depend upon how much you plan to use them and the distance you will be from the spectator. I did think the Anderson model left something to desire in the bulb.

A lot of the people who actually do the stunt take pride in not bleeding. Others revel in it. It really depends on your story.

I'm considering adding this to my act as well. I don't want, however, to have to deal with the set-up/clean up of blood, though I do like Jim's stained handkerchief idea. As such, I don't think I'll need anything other than a way to apply the secret (stat gimmicks look good) and an upholstery needle.

I used to perform with the Anderson needle quite a bit and found it to be quite reliable.
Stat is also a fantastic way to go. As others have mentioned, it really depends on your story, your character and how you want your audience to perceive you and the effect. Blood can be used to great effect, but as Harley said, those who really perform the stunt pride themselves on not bleeding. I personally performed with no blood and would get the screamers and the fainters just the same. It all comes down to craft and presentation! I'm sorry that I'm not able to actually speak to the differences between the different needles available, though.

So when I’ve been searching for the Stat needle through arm I had only seen the gimmick pads, I hadn’t actually realised they did the needles too!
I’ve ordered the first aid kit as I think this will suit both stage and close up if the need arises plus it seems really good value. Magic depot currently have it on offer for $50 and they do free worldwide shipping too so couldn’t resist! Thanks again to everyone who’s helped me out with this, like I’ve mentioned my set is mentalism but I do like to throw in a bit of bizarre to mix it up, Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas Chris |

I am a big fan of Harry Anderson, but with all due respect, he didn't invented this trick. The credit belongs to Steve Spangler. More information can be found in a great book by Mike Caveney called Wise Guy. One of the best books out there.

Not sure about this...maybe someone can clue me...I do believe Sia Synn also did this on her upper thigh. Inside to outside. BIG long needle! Really, I don't think this is Magic, per se. Either real or fake. It's a type of challenge I relate to sword swallowing or fire eating. Strait Jacket escapes and that type also are not "Magic", in that they are a stunt. It's still a type of "look what I can do...you can't," thing. Different level. Different act.
I have done Harry Anderson's "Needle Thru The Arm" for years. I realized my first mistake was doing it in a Magic Show environment. Let's just say it was NOT "entertaining"! Apologies were made. Any time I have to apologize (on the radio or before a crowd), I have failed. Pack up, go home. But...drunks in a bar, now there ya go! Perfect venue! I do believe that was Shorty's. Left 'em howling! But...they were already howling, so... There are body penetrations that DO seem magical. Take Jimmy Finger's "Choppo" for example. Seen that? No gimmicks, no funny "moves". Ungimmicked sword goes RIGHT THRU the arm! It IS shocking. But impossible! Amazing Jonathan uses a "Knife Thru Arm" that is jaw-dropping. But...I digress... The Needle Thru The Arm uses a variety of different media, depending on where you live. I was told to use Spirit Gum, but I have TERRIBLE luck with that! Here in America, we have this: https://target.scene7.com/is/image/Targe......mt=pjpeg But, I understand it is different (or not available) in the U.K.. The stuff they use for bicycle tubes is totally different. But might work, I dunno. If you do these stunts on a regular basis, you might alternate arms/locations. This is nasty stuff on your skin, if prolonged. Doug |

Can someone point me some direction regarding that Sia Synn effect, either here or via PM? Thanks!

The method used by Sia Synn is not one that can be purchased. Nor should it be learned from a book.
