Most of us know how Andre' Koles Squeeze Box is accomplished. I mean... it's pretty simple in magic terms. (But still an ingenious invention). Squeeze Box, Copperfield style, can be performed alone. You would need stage hands to spin the prop in order to present the illusion properly.
Also.. Andrew Mayne's "Squeeze Boy" - which uses a different method, but similar effect, was published in his book "Solo-X" which is illusions for the solo performer. While you are correct that large illusions need more than one person to load and unload, that doesn't mean they need more than one person to perform. As I mentioned earlier in this thread, J C Sum has a really great video / book set on a large scale "solo" illusion show that includes Wind Shear, a shadow appearance illusion, solo modern art, and other very large scale illusions. He performs the show solo, but relies on a professional stage crew to help load / unload, and to move props etc. This is a very appropriate thing to rely on in the professional markets that he works in. And then of course there are illusions that 1 person could handle if they chose to... the Harbin Bow Saw, the Blaney Ladder, several walk-through something illusions, they've all been mentioned in above comments. Do you consider the Blaney Ladder "Grand Illusion" ? Subjective... but I think it is. Copperfield performed it as such. |

I was just trying to expand awareness to your comment that it was "very hard to cut yourself in half put you back together." Yes, most of my illusions use a cadre of talented assistants, but there are always clever ways around that. I will say that to me, most solo illusions are not as good as the more developed illusions utilizing more people. A lot of the self bisecting illusions come to mind. Many are clever but not necessarily good but again... the exceptions make the rule.

Ray,
What would be your favorite solo illusion? (in the category of Blaney Ladder, Harbin Sawing, etc., something that could be truly performed in a one-man show, but still be billed as an illusion and not an "illusionette"). Feel free to name more than one if you want. ha. |

I sure count it as a full stage illusion when it's in Teller's hands!

And all this time I thought the difference between a trick and an illusion was the dimintion of the apparatus And the amount charged by the magician to perform it

What is the Tarbell Eclipse illusion? I have read several postings on his act which mentioned it but could find no information on the effect itself.

A large metal Disc travels across the stage invisibly from one paper covered frame to another. As it is passed in front of a drum head lit with hundreds of light bulbs it makes a sharp black shadow that eventually blots out the drum head and then passes on the other side. Peter Tappan did it at Abbott's in the Sixties or Seventies. Tarbell ended his Chautauqua type shows with it. It fit in a car trunk.

I recently saw Josh Knott's show at the South Carolina State Fair. His wife was home with his daughter since school had started and he did an excellent "one man" illusion show with one stagehand.

FasciN8, most people here are not into cheap knock-offs from China.

I didn't pay much more than $300 for a used Magellan. Buy the real deal, the cheap usually comes out expensive!
