It strikes me that casual mental magic and/or bizarre must be a whole lot harder than casual card/coin/close-up magic.
Anyone try this out? I have a couple of mental magic effects which I enjoy a lot and keep in my wallet, and I guess a lot could be done with a sw*mi, ESP cards or a haunted key. What works for people here who like to dabble in mentalism and the such like? |

Well, setting aside the personal opinion that one cannot "dabble" in Mentalism ...
It is more difficult in the sense that there's more work to be done in establishing prestige, building the proper atmosphere, and so on. However, once that part is done I think it is pretty easy. I have a variety of hypnosis and suggestion based routines I can do at any time and that's generally what I end up doing in casual settings, as I don't like carrying props day-to-day on the off chance someone wants to see me perform something.

Cool.
Yes, I imagine atmosphere plays a huge part in mentalism and bizzare magic, and I really think that'll be hard in a casual setting - I'd guess you'd have to time your location just right, and only perform for strangers who didn't know you. No easy feat to arrange such a thing for the casualist. As for carrying stuff in the off-chance, I can understand that. However, when I carry stuff it's in the expectation that I'll arrange a performance for someone rather than hoping they'll ask me out of the blue (not many would do that, certainly strangers wouldn't). I guess that's why I prefer 'casual' to 'impromptu' labels. So as to avoid semantic arguments, maybe I should re-phrase myself in terms of haunted effects and mental magic, rather than bizarre and mentalism. |

You don't have to time it, per se. You just have to know how to create the atmosphere on the fly. Sometimes doing this sort of work in a casual setting is very profound - because it seems to much more unprepared and "real".
When I say I don't like carrying props, I also mean because I don't like my pockets being full. One item in any pocket is generally all I can stand, and three of my pockets are already taken with my EDC. That leaves only one "spare" pocket for any kind of prop so I generally just don't bother. I also don't generally have trouble performing for friends and family. I just keep in mind their various personalities and gear the presentations to fit them better.

Dabbling in mentalism and the bizarre context is key. A special coin given to me by my grandfather. Something I learned while studying psychology in college. Almost any reason can be given for the one or two pieces you might do outside the normal exposition of magic. Props are the least important things we carry what matter more is how we justify or cover there use in the first place. The best props are the ones not seen or are hidden in plain sight and not perceived as props at all.
As I forage forward on my mental journey I find that what works more times than not is when I can help others. Realizing either something about themselves they had forgotten or give them a tool they can use to better their own lives and those around them. If my work isn't doing that then today I'm not interested.
No matter how many times you say the wrong thing, it will NEVER be right.

Have a look at some of the propless mentalism stuff, I recommend the works of Peter Turner on this subject.
