Do these DVDs actually require any skill? I don't want to a buy a whole set of self-working tricks from almost £30, so can anyone tell me are these good trick and do they require at least a bit of time to learn?
Thanks in advance. -Nik

From what I've read, those DVDs are definitely worth the money.

Niko,
I only have volume 2, but as a beginner I can definitely say they are not self-working. All require skill and practice. Hope this helps! peter

Don't let the title fool you. Although majority of the effects on the DVD are easy for intermediate to advanced cardicians, it will still require you to take your time practicing it.
You can do the trick if you know all the sleights beforehand, but I encourage you to legitimately practice it several times in order to get it down to performance level. I'd say the DVDs are of great value to all magicians, the most bang for the buck. |

I was less impressed with these than with books that I've gotten. I picked up three first and did like a couple of the effects and then later picked up two and didn't like it as much as three.
I think I'll skip the rest unless there is one with a lot of usable effects that I don't already know or have a book source for. Almost all of the effects require SOME skill, some more than others. |

These were the first magic videos I ever bought. He teaches every sleight used in any of the routines. A large percentage of the card material that I do now is from ETMCM.

Easy to do, VERY DIFFICULT to master.

Eery single one of the effects on these DVDs is usable. They are not for absolute beginners; however, you will learn everything you need to know. Ammar is a great teacher, and these DVDs are easier to learn from than anything else I've ever seen. The level of sleight difficulty is that you will be doing double lift, double undercut, riffle force, Elmsley count, etc.
If you want to learn strong card effects, this is the first thing you should get. I recommend volume 2 most of all, but all of them have essential effects. |

The DVDs do require some skill, but as ashah has said, the sleights are not too difficult to pick up and are well taught by Ammar. The DVD set contains some great tricks. I recommend getting them.

Yep, I recommend them too.
Each volume has several different kinds of tricks. Some impromptu other not so, but they all have their strong side! You are going to like one effect more then the other, that is pretty clear. Start learning the ones you like! I believe that my magic really got a boost from this DVD set. The effects are really strong. Some of the sleight may not be explained in the same depth as some other sources may do that. But the effect itself is explained really well. If you want to learn only the sleights, I may not recommend this because there are other sources that do that better (for instance Daryl's Encyclopedia of Card Sleights), but if you want to be taught a couple of extremely strong effects and start using the sleights straight away, this IS the way to go! Thanks, guys, I really appreciate it. I think I will definitely get them soon.
Should I start from volume one or does it not really matter? What are your favourite volumes? -Niko

The problem with volume 1 is that while it has some outstanding effects (such as Red Hot Mama, Triumph, Cannibal Cards), it also has some weak ones (The Secret to a Perfect Royal Flush, Further Than That, A Night at the Improv). That's just my opinion.
It does not matter where you start, as they do not need to be followed in a specific order. Volume 2 is my recommendation (Twisting the Aces, Daley's Last Trick, Ambitious Card, MacDonald's Aces, etc.) All of them are pretty good though. |

Volume 2 is the best of the lot in my opinion. I'd start from there.

I have used 'Secret to a Royal Flush' for over 25 years now. I would cosider that one effect worth the price of the DVD (almost) if I hadn't learned it in a very inexpensive book already.
This effect always holds their interest and then hits them in the gut with the finale. Sincerely, Randy |

IMO these six videos set the standard by which I judge all other videos. I felt they were all that strong in both content and format.

You will never go wrong with a bit Ammar. The DVDs are all excellent. OK, some take a little practice, but they are all worth the effort. If you like it ieasy, buy volume 2. It has a nice, easy but very good effect called "Overkill".

The popularity of these videos, I feel, speaks volumes for their worth. The dozens of magicians "casting a shadow" and these same dozens sharing inside jokes about the video series is proof enough.
In all honesty, if a magician did nothing but the effects available on these videos they would have a satisfactory career as a closeup magician (though repeated clients will see the same effects). And of course you will get the traditional "best magician I ever saw" from spectators who never have never seen closeup magic before. The videos contain effects that involve "work," but I hesitate to say they are anything of a difficult nature. All of the sleights involved are sleights that any magician should be able to do. And, perhaps not coincidentally, these sleights will allow you to do one VERSION (not necessarily as published) or another of at least 90% of the card magic out there. The videos contain material for all levels from self-working (Further than That which is a great effect, try letting a spectator do all the work) to more moderate effects (JC's torn and restored). I have found that people like the first three and seem to like the later three less. I see this trend in people that are just starting magic, and it is my belief they are fooling themselves into believing that if they are not fooled by an effect it cannot be good. Obviously, as you go through the series, your knowledge of magical principles skyrockets. Be careful And as a sidenote: I know of at least one effect on the series that was added without permission. I will not mention the effect/s or the magician/s involved because they are okay with it. They would have liked to have been asked though. I only mention this because I know how magicians tend to be in regards to permission/credits and such. And I just wanted to show that it even happens at the major production company level.

An example from ETMCM is Twisting the Aces, many magicians would be able to see the method on the first showing but when I performed it for my brother, he freaked! |
