Marc that is a smart post. And I am delighted to tell you the fb group covers an ideal way to generate a number that only they could know. If you own a certain product already you’ll have the ideal way to do this. Also it then becomes a very clever way to use it P@! S£)w which opens up enormous possibilies and means you don’t have to take your phone out on stage. Enjoy.

There is probably only one app I use in paid gigs but then I primarily perform cabaret. I can think of very few instances where I feel it is justified to take your phone out on stage. The other reason is that many of my favourite apps require an internet connection. My primary work is banquets and many of the venues I work are in basements with absolutely no signal. I like to be in control of as much as possible during a paid gig and I have absolutely no control of my own mobile signal let alone a participant signal who may be on a completely different network to me. So if an app requires an internet connection it is instantly ruled out of my set. If I were doing close up it wouldn’t be as much of an issue as it is a lot easier to change sets between tables.

Fortunately this doesn’t require an internet connection but it wouldn’t suit my style to use this on stage. For stage I think it would be far more professional to have properly prepared my list onto some kind of visual medium rather than use the notes app on my phone. For close up or for casual performances the phone notes are much easier to justify. I have this and I will use it in casual situations once I have found the right vehicle for it. I don’t see a problem with the notes app if there is some layering. I’m not a great lover of the simple force/reveal presentation in general. I prefer to use the force item as a starting point rather than an end point. For instance use the word association effect from Atlas Brookings the real thing. Or use some of the ideas from Pete Turners Devil in Disguise 2. This way the thing you reveal isn’t on the list nor has it ever been on the list.

The challenge I have right now is finding a good way to know the number without them telling you. In order to move away from the force/reveal presentation it’s important that the spectator believes you don’t know the number especially if you perform any rainman effects that would indicate that you can easily remember a list of 109 things.

If the position on the list is not known to you and the item at that position is only used as a starting point and the spectator uses it as a springboard to get to an apparently free destination. When you reveal that destination that only ever existed in their head the last thing they will suspect is an app.

My head hurts. Why oh why complicate matters. The whole point of this app is to keep it simple, stupid. KISS. The way Nick performs it in the demo is brilliantly simple and the guests are dumbstruck. The end. Mission accomplished.

It all comes down to whether you still want them still fooled an hour later. As a close up magician force/reveal is probably good enough, if you are performing credible Mentalism you need to work a little harder. More effort on the performers part doesn’t mean it isn’t simple for the spectator. Think of a number, look up the number on the list, now think of the complete opposite. Job done the item they are thinking of is not on the list and could be absolutely anything and you theoretically couldn’t have forced it because you don’t know where they started let alone where they ended. The trailer performance looks great, took my girlfriend around 15 minutes to backtrack and suggest an app.

I think out of all the apps I own (most of them) lol this one is the most robust in term of no trickery pokery in play. It’s perfect for that “I hear you’re a magician. Show me a trick” scenario that we all find ourselves in often.

Adding a form of peek to obtain the number initially will certainly help to cloak the method, however I'm getting fantastic reactions just doing it as Nick does on the trailer. Simple and direct. Each to their own I guess.

I also like the bit Nick does when he asks them to change their mind from the first number - I use this, and explain that often people use birthdays which restricts the number to 1 to 31 so that may give me a smaller range of numbers to work with, plus I may have somehow found out your birthday etc... When it comes to the reveal, I ask them what was their original number and get them to check the celebrity there - obviously, if they hadn't changed their mind, there would have been a different outcome........

As a double kicker, maybe this first number could also be revealed - ie, written prediction on business card on table? Just a thought... Great app Nick

As I said it all depends on whether you want fantastic reactions in the moment or a long term cooler. As a magician people know we use tricks. If an hour later a spectator thinks they know how you did one or two of them it’s not a major problem, you did your job and you entertained them in the moment. People will often try and backtrack and some will come up with credible theories. As a mentalist you do t have the same visual flash bank whiz of a magician and so it all hinges on your credibility.

My girlfriend isn’t a typical magicians girlfriend who knows lots of methods. We haven’t been together that long and I don’t practice on her. She has been to one of my gigs and she came to lads with me where we hung out in the bar. She watched the trailer with me and her initial reaction was a typical layman’s reaction. Around 10 minutes later she had figured out the method completely and the only thing that she got wrong was that she thought it was voice activated. My gut feeling and all of my experience of working to laymen is that she is the norm rather than the exception.

Cypher sells with a similar force/reveal for a lottery ticket. Funny enough the effect that is taught with Cipher is version 1 of my effect Numbers. I rejected version 1 straight away because as incredible as the reactions were in my testing when I pushed my non magician friends to offer a solution 100% of them surmised that the number must have been forced, because I used their phone they didn’t know how but the general consensus was that the sum was always going to add up to that number no matter what they input. The current version that uses the force number as a starting point gets equal reactions but that same test group could not offer even a single method.

The tool is exactly what it is supposed to be, a digital force bag. It’s very well put together and has a great input method. Tarim is 100% spot on that Occams Razor takes you straight to app . That’s not the apps fault it is up to the performer to layer and structure logical disconnects.

Not much to add... layering is always something we should think about. ONE possible layer here might be to use iThump... one spectator communicates to another spectator his thought off number by this way, it is a non verbal communication. The second spectator is then asked to delete the number... of course, to make it convincing you should have an Apple watch... Jan

Maybe a nice layer would be writing the prediction on your business card and for example put it in an envelope with a hole in the back.
This way you can also add the number to the prediction by using a swami gimmick.

This wouldn’t be a good thing, you wrote the list so if you predicted the number it stands to reason that you know the item. In such a case the list becomes obsolete and you may as well just dispense with the list and predict the number.

I'm not sure that is the problem with this idea

It's not redundant because you would know the number if you know the item... it's a more basic misunderstanding than that...

It's the App that's redundant - if you are going to s____ the answer... makes no sense to use a gimmicked app - and your hands will be totally free if you just use an ungimmicked list/etc

I understand why people don't like the layering - as they see it as extra process but for no more [maybe less] of an imediate effect

It's also off putting to those who aren't versed in the methods for the extra 'work'

I have a presententional idea that I think makes it more credible [that is the audience are left thinking about something else - you can't leave them with only the app to think about] - will try and write it up later

Those icons may be the ones that come with the app. The keypad is kind of a silly practice tool.
Have you tried it yet?
Sounds like everything may be as it should be.

Thanks Mark and Pegasus as I can’t get it working . I take a picture of my home screen and it doesn’t work . Even a blank picture and it still doesn’t . Something must be missing from the instruction as where do you get the correct blank screen from as mine is covered in the wrong icons even after trying everything . Thanks guys Tarik 🙂
