Just received my Free Security Updates CD from Microsoft. It includes all the Fixed up to October 15, 2003. It installs very easily. Now you will know, you have all the fixes for 98, 98SE, ME, XP and XP Pro.
I highly recommend you order this free CD for your computers, this was written up in the May 2004 issue of PC World. http://www.find.pcworld.com/41294 Highly recommended security fixes. Service Pack 2 for Windows XP not released yet. |

Yes, even though 98, 98SE, and ME have reached there end of life by Microsoft's policy. They have decided to extend this date until a later time. I would imagine it will be when the next version of Windows come out in 2005.
That will mean that the Automatic Update page will no longer work for these eariler versions. That is why I suggest you get these early updates. Just in case you want to still use your current machine or sell it. |

Oh, and Microsoft does not even charge you postage. That makes it totally free!

You can also check with your ISP (if they are local) After buying a new comp. I called my ISP and they told me to bing it in and they would install ALL pactches for free (they added or else you can bring it in after getting infected and we'll charge you $80 then)
A few min. later they were done. SO if you have a local ISP that is willing to do it for free it may go a little faster. X

The CD in my case only took 10 min to install. If you can put the CD in the drive, it self installs. I also checks what is installed and updates everything for you. What could be simplier. Did not take my computer anywhere. I only had to reboot twice.
This does not install Service Pack 1a for XP, that is a separate disk that is free but you must pay the postage. Even if you updated the online updates, there may still be good to have this disk to check everything. |

True but I'd rather drive my computer a mile and be done in one day, then wait a week for a CD to show up and hop on the internet in the mean time and MAYBE get infected.

Why aren't people just using windows update for this???
I mean you don't have to wait a week for a CD, you just log on and patch, then your safe. |

For dial up the download time is currently 3 hours for downloading all critical updates as for downloading the ABSOLUTELY needed patches right away there is still a 90% you will get hit BEFORE you get them installed.
Such things as "blaster" will get you within 10 seconds of a new "patchless" computer connecting to the internet for the first time. Just because your new computer comes with Norton or McAfee installed DOES NOT mean it is up to date and ready to take on "blaster" or some others and yes they are still floating around in cyber space. X-treem,
Long download time, that is why the disk is free. Order it on line. There is no worry about registered users or anything like that. I have 4 computers and it is easier to get the disk. McGyver, Some patches can be overwritten by an install of a program and the microsoft update page shows it is already installed. This update disk checks and installs all missing fixes. You all can argue anything you want. I just wanted everyone on the Café to be safe and have 'all' the security updates. None of these will be available when the next version of windows is issued. So if you want to erase your hard drive to sell your current computer then you will not be able to bring it up to date, therefore noone will want to buy your machine without the latest operating system. |
