I don't take myself at all seriously, I'm quite ridiculous in fact. Insult me, laugh at me all you like, I'm a big boy and can take it. Mentalism on the other hand I take very seriously, not only is it my career, it's also my passion. You trivialise mentalism when you talk about it or perform it as a childs magic trick.

Again... could it be that you're judging me too quickly? Because if that's what you read into my posts, then you might be a big boy but I'm afraid your reading skills haven't quit developed along with your personality . Read them again. I love mentalism and I love watching guys like Gerry MacCambridge, Derren Brown, David Blaine and Criss Angel perform it (the last two of 'em really do some mentalism stuff, you should check it out). I truly hope you can start to see that we share a passion, we only have different philosophies on it. But living in a free country that's something I think you should be able to handle and embrace. No need for hostility. At least not for somebody that calls himself a Big Boy.
Have a great day, buddy!

My point is that IF you are doing silverware bending, you should supply your own even if working in a restaurant. This is not going to be any more out of place than you yourself are. In the context of a performance, it makes sense for you to supply your own items. I always made the same explanation, "I buy these at my local Walmart or Target so that I don't have to use the ones here. They get mad at me for using theirs." Done. That explains the silverware, AND encourages the patrons to not ask me to use the restaurant's. Plus, I ALWAYS hand out my spoons before I begin. Every spoon that is bent gets examined by the patrons. As for youtube and other sources of exposure, block your routine and come up with a performance that makes the audience certain that what they saw you do is not the same thing as what they see on youtube.

In addition to the wonderful insights of Mr. Catoe I'd like to add that context and presentation is everything. If the fork or spoon is part of a box of spoons brought to the table by staff that you have bought in advance then the idea of gimmick silverware will be squashed. As far as patrons taking home silverware that you have bent and them trying to bend the silverware at the table it's not an issue. Remember YOUR PAYING FOR IT so the venue won't care. I have worked restaurants for almost 20 years. Never once have had a problem with a GM who knew in advance what I was going to do and with whom I had made arrangements. Be open and honest and you will be fine.

Thanks, Senor! That's an interesting idea, having it brought to you by staff! What did you instruct them to say at the moment they presented it to you? I mean, how did you "justify" that moment?

My patter is this. You can use it if you like? "At this point I'd like to show you something different but works well for where we are. Have you heard of Uri Geller? (regardless of what they say) I had the great pleasure of meeting him many years ago in this very same restaurant at this very same table where he taught me something I'd like to show you now." My box of silverware is by the POS system on a shelf underneath. The wait person will be ready for me to call them over and ask for some silverware before bringing the box over. If they have never heard of Uri I give them a brief description just to intro the effect. Understand that the context of my restaurant show is as one who frequents the establishment and is known for doing interesting things. Not a mentalists yet. I am working on doing mentalism full time in and out of the restaurant but don't know when I'll feel comfortable making a total conversion to mentalism? I'm thinking hopefully by 2019.

Thank you for sharing that! That's interesting. I really like to involve the staff in the show as well.

I always use forks in a restaurant.
Eating with your hands just isn’t appropriate.
Forgive me any language mistakes.

I do a lot of bending, I’d always bring my own that looked similar to the stuff at the restaurant. We had a bunch of people who would bend the silverware after I’d left the table. Just people joking around after one too many cocktails. I was asked by management to find a way to stop people doing this, or I had to drop bending from my set (which at that time was the main bulk of my table set). The way that I solved it was to change my script to include a light hearted disclaimer telling them that any spoons that they bend with their hands would be added to their bill - it was played as a funny anecdote, but it crushed the issue!

Smart thinking. No better way to encourage civilized behavior than through a monetary threat.
