How many people who busk and perform the cups and balls don't use Gazzo's stuff. I get that his routine is based on Vernon's cups but it seems like so many have just adopted his performance style and routine.

Some magicians are not creative. They say "it works". "How often do people see a street magician". I do a cnb but not his routine and finale.

I have never done Gazzo.
He’s not my type. |

Never really saw the appeal to spending a hour on one routine.
Gazzo does and has the gift to gab to go along with it. My routine is much faster not the pace just getting to the end before there eyes glaze over. Normally in larger festivals I won’t do the cups. |

I don't do Gazzo's cups & balls.
Instead I do Paul Daniels Chop Cup which goes over well. Also Daryl's Ambitious and Tabary's Rope Routine. Too many people doing Gaz's cups and balls so I try to be different. |

The routine is supposed to end with a potato, a lemon and an onion under the cups. I simply don't believe you can have those items in your jacket pocket without it being obvious. I changed it to three slightly larger balls made of red yarn finishing with an artificial lime as the last production.

When I started in magic oh so many years ago my first convention was a Tannen's Magic Jubilee in the Catskills in NY, the first lecture I watched was Gazzo and I was not only hooked but blown away. My busking character then was very much a copy of Gazzo's look but I didn't have the chutzpah to have his attitude, I realized after a few months it just wasn't me. I kept the table (standard) and the pouch (standard) but changed everything else. In all my years I never used the final load from a hat or as many final loads as he did. It just didn't work for me. So like most young magicians you start out copying your heros and inspirations but as you work and grow you need to develop your own character and style. Too many are just stopping at the copy stage because as you say "it works". Our art is about constantly learning and growing as a performer which will translate into entertaining each new audience that you stop on your pitch.

Not I.
One of the last living 10-in-one performers. I wanted to be in show business the worst way, and that was it.

I "free style" ... using shell-game style moves I just stand at my table making balls appear and disappear at will, as if on a whim. There was just a water-shed moment when I realized with these moves I can put the ball under any cup I want without a routine, I can just decide where I want it and put it there right under their noses.
Once I started doing this I came up with several interesting sequences. It has become my favorite way to gather a crowd because I don't have to say anything, I just stand there playing with cups and balls and people just take notice and walk up to me. Easy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmnNPoNN9ys -JoeJoe

Just a note
I’ve never seen someone turn there back to the audience to load for cups and balls. |

When you develop an act that is character based, rather than thick based then and only then, will you have an act that cannot be copied or stolen. Listen to Mike Bonfield and be you.

OK
Been around the world I mean at least 5 times and watched tons of street shows. Festivals, street corners, and circle acts doing cups completely surrounded. And again never seen someone turn their back to do the loads. Watch your video, your telegraphing exactly what your doing. If you think that is ok then by all means keep doing it. I only mention this because if a Young street guy or girl sees this they might think it’s the way to do it. I suggest to bring the cup to the bag as instructed by Cellini use miss direction and practice in front of a mirror. Just my two cents, I’m not trying to be mean or get you mad just a observation. Everyone has their own way of doing things...
If you don't wear a hag, then you put a giant grocery sack around your waist to do the cups and you think the audience can't figure out where the loads come from, you are only fooling yourself. Let's be honest, it's not about where the loads come from and usually, the magic is not as important as the characters personality and connection to the audience. Arguing about who has the bigger balls, better loading sequence or who's been around the world the most is irrelevant. |

The reappearance wipes the memory of him turning at all.
That's why they're still surprised at the end. "When did he get those under there?!?" Even though they just watched him turn they can't remember. JoeJoe has been working that pitch forever, obviously it works for him or he wouldn't keep doing it. |
