The card marking system used in the movie was a compromise between realistic methods and something that would make sense to a lay audience. Juice certainly exists, and anyone that's worked with it can tell you that when the work is put in lightly, it may certainly take a few seconds before the marks sort of pop out at you. But it's true that 2" numbers don't suddenly appear on the back of the deck.
The Impulse change on the website is mis-named. The true Impulse change is Jack Carpenter's. What is listed on the website as the Impulse is actually the Zap change. It's the last item in the Acrobatic Card book by Marlo. Jason Quote:

Same goes with one or two other minor moments in the film. There was discussion of me being Stallone's hand double at one point, but it didn't wind up being necessary. I believe Stallone may have used a double for one quick scene, but for the most part did the large majority of his own cardwork. I did not have a hand in teaching any of the actors, that was all Paul Wilson, Damien Nieman and Earl Nelson. I did, however show Stallone, Stuart Townsend, Gabriel Byrne, Hal Holbrook, and several other of the cast and crew some stuff from time to time during the 4-5 days I was on-set. I also got to show some things to the actors that were considering roles in Shade a few years ago. They included Sean Bean (Lord of the Rings) and James Spader (Sex, Lies and Videotape). Incidentally, look one of the very last credits in the movie Rounders. Jason

Thanks for the info. I look forward to seeing that film. I'm very curious to see Stallone, I really liked him in "Copland" a few years back, and this is a bit of a different role for him too.
Will look at Rounders again. I've seen that movie and missed the credits as I didn't have my spectacles on...

Thank you Jason! I completely missed this thread.
BTW, I noticed that you're listed in credits and as one of the folks sitting at a card table. Are you in the scene at the beginning where Jamie Foxx is being conned at that Madam's place or are you one of the folks with Sly in the scene? |

Actually, I'm in neither. I'm sitting next to Earl Nelson in the Castle scene.
I was credited as myself in the final cut of Shade (which no one has on DVD or online yet). I'm also in the credits in the "Grip" section as "Erdnase Grip" (a little inside joke that pleases me to no end). Jason

Jason E.,
I've always wanted a card switch that looked convincing and I could never find one. Not even Marlo satisfied me on that respect. Unil I saw Shade. The McMillan switch is truly awsome and I guess I should just say thanks for putting it on film so that those of use who truly want to learn will get acquainted with our pause and slow-motion button on our DVD remotes. I know that I watched the clip of the switch at the beginning and end of the film a lot of times so I could get a 'feel' for the angles and the mechanics. I've been working on the switch qutie a LOT since last saturday and I've got to say, I'm beginning to get the hang of it... 2 make it look slightly good 4 now.... Now, only four or five more years of practice so the move cannot be detected at all... heheheh.... well, anyway... just wanted 2 say thx 4 putting the move on film. It truly is a masterpiece.... What you have seen this evening was real, though it may have nothing to do with reality.

Getting back to card shark video or DVD's...
The Steve Forte tapes are some of the best that are out there. Geno of the Houdini Magic shop has a great tape out on belly strippers. And I was at jimmy Cards Molinari's house last year and saw great footage of John Scarne doing a demo on Castle films... This I understand has come out on DVD. And speaking of DVD card sharking moves. Jimmy Cards Molinari gives away his culling and stacking methods on his DVD. It is highly recomended by me because I have been using his ideas in culling and stacking for almost 20 years. I also have some interesting stuff including an outstanding cut the aces routine on my Cards DVD and it will be on the market again in August. I hope this helps.
