This past Sunday, I was asked to fill in for our minister to do the children's sermon. I pulled one of my favorite routines out of the bag, The Wilting Flower, and applied a gospel lesson. I showed the flower, and asked how we keep a flower healthy. The kids replied with "water it" "give it sun", etc. Then, I went into the "wilting" routine with the flower, then I explained that our souls need to do much of the same to keep healthy. The kids replied that they need to pray, read the Bible, etc. I used a lot of comedy, but the message came through because the kids really were able to give great answers.

Sounds very nice.
It is amazing how much the youngsters know. And often all we need to do is draw it out of them, sometimes straingtening it out a bit, and reinforce it with them. BroDavid

I really like that, I never would have thought of using a wilting flower gag for such a good illustration. It is amazing what the kids can come up with if we can figure out how to motivate them in the right direction. When one kid comes up with something good, all the other kids start thinking, trying to come up with their own contributions, and it snowballs. You've got the kids Thinking, Listening and Understanding, because it is actually on their level, about things they can relate to. Then, they see that you are talking to them, not at them, and that increases their attention levels to. There is just no downside. I will Definitely have to pull out my old wilting flower, and give this idea some thought. Godspeed Steve Ps Two Posts, eh, Welcome to the Café. I think You will enjoy it here, it is a GREAT Place. |

I would never have thought of that either. I have a great morning "quickie" for the camp I am doing next weekend.
Thanks!

Thank you for your kind thoughts. I am surprised it took me so long to find this message board. Lots of great stuff here, and it seems like a great group of people.
I have been involved in magic for 30 years, most of them as a part time professional. In recent years, I have been called on to do an occassional children's sermon at church when the minister is on vacation. It has been a rewarding challenge to look at routines I have done forever, and see them in a new "Light". |

Welcome friend Tom!
Nice to have join us. This really is a great place, and most folks who come here say the same thing, "Icant believe it took me so long to find this place." I was told by a nice fellow that I bought some magic from on ebay. After we dialoged back and forth a couple of times in email, he asked if I had ever been here. And I had not. So I came here, and am quite happy that I did. I see you are from Cleveland. We have a regular FCM meeting monthy in Akron right off of the Expressway, convenient to anyone in Northeastern Ohio, and all are welcome to stop y on teh first Saturday of the Month at 7:00 pm For more info go to http://www.neofcm.com BroDavid

Thanks for the 411 BroDavid. I never got into SAM or IBM here in Cleveland, because I did not want to get involved in the politics of it all. Some nice people, but I was more interested in performing magic than keeping closet magicians happy with me. I do work on Saturdays, but I will endeavor to attend the next meeting.
