So my daughter had a great idea to do a magic trick for her school talent show. She likes to up the ante of her act every year. Previous years she's sang, danced etc. So I said cool let's run with it. Well she was set on a sub trunk trick and then decided to do a head and body twister illusion instead. Ok cool. Had a few ideas on how to pull it off based on various videos etc. But to save hassle I ordered Steve Kovarez's plans.
I have a question about the "doors" not sure if it's appropriate to pose the question in here or not so I'll err on the side of caution if someone familiar with his plans or the prop in general wouldn't mind sending me a message for clarification regarding a portion of the plans. Also I'm looking for ideas on the presentation side to make it a little more fun. Rather than just the song " the twist " etc. |

How old is your daughter? Also, how much time does she have to prepare for the performance after the apparatus is ready for her to practice with it? Also, how much experience does she have in performing magic?

A good guy to fill you in on this is Dick Oslund. MaxArtifice asked three important questions. How much time she has to prepare could be a deal breaker. She was set on a sub trunk trick and then decided to do a head and body twister illusion instead??? Wow. I'm not sure I'm qualified to give advice here.
Jonathon Pendragon could tell you how long he and Char' rehearsed their version of Sub Trunk! Doug |

Thanks guys. Yea she saw some kids do it for their talent shows on YouTube (sub trunk) then changed her mind to head and body twister.
She has about about three weeks till the show from today...cutting it very close I know but she has no obligations other than this. Too me twister seems like a doable thing (please correct me if I'm wrong) but you guys are the experts, not me. I'm working on building it as we speak. She is 10. She has zero experience. They have about 2 min to perform. |

Wow.
I would want more like a couple of months prep time minimum...three weeks would be too much pressure for me. I respect your attitude and your commitment to your daughter. Good luck on it. Hope it goes well. |

Thanks again guys. Yea hoping to have it finished in the next day or two. A bit frustrated with the plans. They leave a lot to be figured out in terms of missing dimensions on a couple key pieces, materials list, attaching certain components to others (screws and bolts, types and sizes for example), images look like they were taken with a cell phone then drawn in MS Paint. Maybe I'm being a little critical as someone with little experience. Id share some of plans as an example but I am sure that is frowned upon.
I think my biggest annoyance at this point is I have the main cabinet (body section) shell built and there is no way this fits an average adult. Im 5'8" about 200lbs and not gonna happen. My wife is 5'4" and average and its a tight fit for her.. I am guessing the person the plans were designed for was a child or teen at largest. I don't have to time or materials to redesign and enlarge it to fit myself so looks like she is going in the box, which is fine with her. Id think they should say these plans are designed around the frame of a 5'2" 102 pound person.. Sorry for the little rant here. I bought the plans here: https://www.magicshop.co.uk/the-head-bod......download |

If it was me I would ask her if she had a friend (or a best friend) who would be okay with acting as her assistant and go in the box. That way she gets to be the magician. I agree that you are out of time and are going to have to go with it as is because she should be practicing her routine with the cabinet (and assistant) quite a few times before the talent show. Ideally, to really pull off a great act, she should have music and wardrobe (however basic) for the practice.
I am very impressed, though, with your efforts to help her in this. You are racking up some major league Dad Points that will pay serious dividends later in her life. |

Medicbear can I ask how long it took to build the twisted and how easy or otherwise you found this? I would be interested to know your approximate material cost as well if you are willing to share.

Comments were made on the time it takes to pull something like this off and now you know why. Most illusion plans are sketchy at best. Most illusionists that build their own props build a mock-up out of cardboard first. Then they modify it and cut the pieces from plywood. Have you ever met a magician's assistant - a box jumper? Yes, they are all 5'2 and 100 pounds. It's the nature of the business. Professional magicians with larger assistants have their props custom built (or build their own). |

But there has been quite a bit of analyzing and reanalyzing the plans, measure twice cut once, guess work, trying to figure things out that weren't in the plans. Re-doing things I didn't like, trial and error... Mind you I have ZERO experience building props, reading plans or building anything that wasnt part of a kit. Money wise all items coming from home depot or ace hardware I'm about 125ish into it so far. And I still have the head contraption to buy materials for and build, paint, and clothing for the effect. The only tools I have used have been a jigsaw (has made for some interesting cuts), drill, screw driver and metal yard stick.. Had I actually had table saw, some other tools, an extra set of hands to help and experience I would probably be done by now. Oh I forgot to mention I have done all this so far on the tailgate of my truck as my garage is a wreck right now.... lol.. But I think it looks ok so far. Wife is already asking me how much I can sell it for when we are done lol. |

Medicbear, you officially get "The Magic Café Father of the Year Award." Of course I just made this award up, and if it actually did exist I would have absolutely no authority to give it to you. Yet, in reality, you certainly deserve this fictitious award.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.
