Yeterdays American Airlines tragedy is a terrible loss. I, along with the magic community, offer my condolences to everyone affected by this accident.
But to the hundreds of fearful persons who have cancelled holiday travel plans because they are now afraid to fly I offer the following statistics: MEANS OF DEATH / AVG PER YEAR Dog Bites 20 Lightning Strikes 95 Food Allergies 125 Commercial Air *130* Falling in Bathtub 300 Bicycle 795 Commercial Rail 1096 Pedestrian Accident 5500 Motor Vehicles 50,000 And,of course, the risk goes up with exposure, which means those bigger numbers can start to make for some pretty small odds. For example, the fatality rate is about 1.7 fatalities per 100,000,000 automobile miles (in 1994-1998), or about 1 fatality per 60,000,000 miles. Another way of looking at this is that if a person drove about 600,000 miles in their lifetime (12,500 miles per year for 50 years), there is about 1 in 100 chance that person will die as a result of an automobile accident during their lifetime. As compared to the odds of dying in a commercial airline crash: 1 in 1,568,000 (deaths increasing 0.7 per 100 million aircraft miles). Just thought I would assist with a few numbers so that we might put things into perspective for those intent on making fear and paranoia their new way of life. (Data taken from CDC and HAZMAT websites.)

Very good points. My stepfather was a pilot, and I've always felt safer in a plane than in a car.

I feel safe in both but I feel safer in a car because you don't have to worry about other crazy driver's.
