Hey guys,
I ordered a PHP Super Slim Hip Pocket Mullica wallet from Penguin Magic recently. I received it and I think Penguin sent me a knock-off version of it. From what I've read/seen, these are supposed to have a gold zipper and my inner wallet has a black, cheap looking zipper. The leather also doesn't look anything like what's shown in the video, so I'm not sure if they're trying to pass these off as the SSHPM or did they change the design on these. Has anyone else received a PHP SSHPM with a black zipper instead of the gold? Here's a link to a photo I took of the wallet that I received: https://imgur.com/a/0jxn5 Thanks, Jaybs |

On another note - I also ordered a new Porper card clip from Penguin and the quality and look of the Porper card clip was much different from the two that I purchased a few years ago from a local magic shop that sells original products. Is there a way to confirm if this is a Porper clip knock off as well? The things that I noticed look off are the etching of the Joe Porper stamp (looks faded and skinnier font than the originals) and the quality of the metal doesn't seem to be ask thick. The color is also much lighter than the two originals I bought and the one I received recently has a "made in the USA" stamp in the inside of the clip. You can see the pictures of the two.
Porper Original: https://imgur.com/a/HTRsY Porper New (that I received from Penguin and can't tell if it's legit. You can see if you compare the two side by side that the etching looks off): https://imgur.com/a/wgNOi |

If Penguin were selling knock offs - that would be a massive scandal
So I would be very sure that the items are not knock offs But I have no clue - so hope others can help you Although the wallet has a gold zip in all the photos [I can see] the rest of the design does seem to match I hope you get a real answer from someone as this is interesting - though maybe in the wrong forum |

Penguin has a return policy that I have taken advantage of just a few times. They are pretty good at making things right.
That has been my experience. They are unfortunately not good at answering phone calls or emails, but when I sent items back, the problem was corrected.

Well, the reviews on other compaines arent good either, some saying that the leather feels like vinyl. I am not sure about the gold zipper problem, but I am pretty sure that Penguin well sell a knock off.

Penguin has sold a hip pocket Mullica for years before the Paul Harris version came out. You may have simply gotten the wrong product. Or PHP changed their manufacturer. That happens a lot. We would never sell a counterfeit product.
Please contact our customer service. They can help you. |

I inquired with Janet Harris and received this response (with permission to post it)..
"Hi All Our Super Slim Mullica wallet manufacturer did indeed make a short run of the wallets without the gold zipper (think it was silver)..and it’s quite possible he also used a different source for the leather than the original run..will have to check on that. Not exactly sure how this all happened..but I know these details are important and PHP takes full responsibility for every item we make. So for anyone who prefers the gold zipper and original leather (as close as we can get) Please go thru the normal Penguin exchange/return system and we will happily  take care of you. Same return/exchange policy holds for any PHP product that has any issues. Take Care Janet Harris Paul Harris Presents" On the Porper line it is being manufactured by somebody else who took over his production.  Joe is no longer making the products in his line so I am not sure if they have changed the design/production. I hope that helps clarify things.  Thanks. Tim Trono PS I was just informed by PHP that it will likely be two or three months wait before a new run of wallets is ready. |

Thanks Tim. I also contacted the PHP and Porper customer service teams to confirm if the SHPM and Porper clips are legit or not. It's a bit of a hassle to have to ship items back and have to wait for the correct product to be shipped/arrive, especially when the customer is not at fault and you're a working professional who uses this stuff for a living (my Mullica was stolen during my last gig). I'll reach out to Penguin customer service on this and see what they can do to expedite things.

Summary:
Evidently it's the producer at fault in both cases. |

Hello Joe Thank you for contacting us. I am aware of the wallet situation and that is indeed our wallet. We are making new ones with gold zippers, and you will be able to exchange your wallet at that time if you wish. I do not know the schedule of their arrival, however. The manufacturers were unable to get gold zippers for this last batch. Please check back with me in a month and hopefully will know more information by then. Janet Harris -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Super Slim Hip Pocket Mullica From: Joe A XXXXXXXXXXXXXX Date: Sat, April 07, 2018 2:29 pm To: customerservice@paulharrispresents.com Hi PHP, I purchased the PHP's SSHPM from Penguin Magic. The wallet I received does not have the gold zipper on it. I've attached a picture so you could see the inner wallet that I received without the gold zipper. There was a sticker on the bag that the wallet that it came with that said: "Dearest Customer, R.R. has personally hand tested your gimmick ,if for any reason your gimmick is damaged or defective in anyways, please contact us directly at customerservice@paulharrispresents.com..." Can you please let me know if I was sent a knock-off version by Penguin? Thank you, Joe |

Thanks Tim. I did receive the email from Janet and will work with them directly to exchange since it sounds like the ETA on the next batch is unknown at this time. Appreciate everyone's help.

Actually, I was just trying to ask a question to validate if it was legitimate or not - if it rubbed you the wrong way, then that's on you, but please bear in mind that I posted it without any malicious intent. I decided to start a post on the Cae because I figured this was an open forum and I could get input from magicians if it was legitimate. I trust the opinions of the everyday magician because I consider a majority of their opinions to be unbiased. For the record - I've been a Penguin customer for multiple years and overall, I think they're great.
And yeah, it's a real shame that instead of bickering back and forth on a magic forum that I would want to pick up a phone and discuss it like an adult - god forbid. |
