When producing an 8 ft x 8 ft silk what are some of the mechanisms used to hold the corners of the silk up that high and wide?
Would something like a plastic appearing cane be able to shoot those corners up? Although I don't know if they would be strong enough. Thank you in advance. |

Pulley's and hooks. You will have to reinforce the top edge, no matter which method you use. You can get brass Grommets at the hardware store.
If reinforcing the edge gets in the way of your production. You will have to work out a solution that works for you. or just buy the Abbott's eight foot Jet Set that may work, if you come up with way to connect it, quickly in performance. |

In Qua-Fiki's "Fish Or Cut Bait" in The Wizards' Journal #20 (shown below) we originally used wooden dowels, but now he is using appearing "bamboo" poles with Velcro attached to the tips to hook Velcro attached to the ends of the rainbow streamer. The streamer is not as heavy as an 8 foot silk, but we have also used the poles on a six foot silk production from Qua-Fiki's "Sneaky Production Box" Enormous silk production with no problems.
The appearing bamboo poles come in 4 foot and 8 foot lengths. The 4 foot length held up high is what we use for the rainbow streamers and six foot silk. Source: http://madhattermagicshop.com/magicshop/......_id=1434

Thank you Bill and Jim for the possible options. Am still trying to think of a way have an 8x8 silk just explode in front of the magician.
I may incorporate your ideas into that. |

I have to admit that I have never considered this before your post. Not sure if this will work, but what jumped into my head are backpacking tent poles. They now make them with shock cords. They are light weight, pack small, come in various sizes and form by giving them a good shake. Might be worth a trip to REI to see. Good luck!

Have to work on that idea but that just very well may work. I first thought of something like appearing canes but they wouldn't be able to support the weight and that was a dumb idea. But your idea seems very plausible. Thank you for the great idea. |

You could attach it to a Spider backdrop. This will give you an explosion effect, but it is very expensive and you cold only do it on a stage or very large room with high ceilings.

Overhead pulleys, flly fishing line and weights on shelves or fast winding motors.
Customer of mine used poles with his 12' x 24' silks.

After they are produced, appearing poles can be used to hold large silks. See here for example:
https://youtube.com/watch?v=vZUVlsEBV9Y So maybe one could combine the pulley idea with the poles? Produce two poles with thread running to top. Plant each in a weighted holder. Then pull the thread to erect silk like is traditionally done. I have never seen it done before so it might make for a unique effect others arent doing, sort of like a flagstaff impact but even larger. |
