Looking for a little help --I am a part time close up magician and have been so for a number of years. I haven't done a stage show for a long time --so I am not equipped for a stage show per se. I am looking for an effect that plays well to a large crowd but doesn't require a lot of expense. Does anybody have any ideas of an effect I can do that plays well and well worth the effort to learn? Thanks in advance for your comments.
No ITR please --and preferably something that has a little audience involvement.

Rope magic... plays for close up, parlor, and stage.

Tossed out deck - Richard Osterlinds Dynamo Deck. Both quite reasonable and you have audience participation.

Egg bag, ropes, silk, rings.
See Pop Haydn, Jeff Hobson, Daryl, Paul Daniels, among others. All performed one-man shows that they could basically carry in a briefcase. No big props, but certainly visible for stage performance. Hudson |

Every one above has given you some good suggestions--and, all of the TRICKS suggested, are done with SMALL PROPS (and, relatively inexpensive PROPS!). OK, HOLD THAT THOUGHT...
You say that you are looking for an EFFECT that plays well to a large crowd, but, doesn't require a lot of expense. You must understand that an EFFECT, IS WHAT THE AUDIENCE PERCEIVES. (Nothing more, nothing less!) You follow with: "Does anybody have any ideas of an EFFECT I can do that plays well and well worth the effort to learn?..." YOU cannot do an EFFECT! YOU can do (i.e. PERFORM) a TRICK.) A TRICK, somewhat like music, only really exists while it is being performed. No matter WHAT TRICK we suggest, whether it plays well, or is worth the effort to learn, will depend on YOUR PRESENTATION. In other words, "It aint WHAT you do, it's HOW you do it. The physical size of a PROP, or the the expense, objectively, has no bearing on your question. The PROPS, however, must be visible, and the EFFECT must be VISUAL to the spectator(s). YOUR PRESENTATION is what makes the performance of a TRICK, ENTERTAINING. ("Magic" is NOT INHERENTLY ENTERTAINING.) ENTERTAINMENT does not "come" by the yard, or the pound, or the cost of the PROP. Your PERSONALITY must be involved in planning your PRESENTATION. Any of the tricks, or props suggested above, if presented well, could entertain. I have performed the tricks, or used the props mentioned above (EXCEPT the Dynamo Deck) for 50 years, touring the USA, from coast to coast and border to border. I prefer using "GENERIC" PROPS, because of their versatility. (A length of rope is almost as versatile as a pack of cards!) Once you decide on a TRICK, there are three things that must happen before you put it in your repertoire: 1. Learn HOW the TRICK is DONE. 2. Learn HOW to DO it. 3. Learn how to DO it, so that it ENTERTAINS an AUDIENCE. I hope that this has been helpful.

You can get a huge reaction (with adequate presentation, of course) from a jumbo version of the Comedy Split Deck.
Chances are you are familiar with this powerful/professional basic effect from your close-up experience. This will not be too difficult to assimilate into your stage persona and everyone, including you, will have FUN. Julie |

I don’t think you can do better than to look at Pop Haydn’s stage material. His rope routine, linking rings, and color changing handkerchief are classic, standard tricks. But his presentation elevates these tricks immeasurably.

You may check out the Social Prediction: http://penguinmagic.com/p/10638
It's an easy & impromptu version of the Confabulation routine where you ask different spectators different things and then show that you had predicted all their answers weeks ago! It involves the audience and is a Killer Closing effect
