What are some tricks that you might find "lame" or "mediocre" that you perform occasionally, but your lay audience LOVES, and request for you to do?

I used to think that Jay Sankey's Back in time is quite 'mediocre', but it's the trick that I get the biggest reaction out of..

WOW-I LOVE Back in Time ( his Triumph twist, right? )
I've never done an effect that I didn't like, so that doesn't happen. Great question, though!!!

I don't really do tricks that I don't want to but I do a lot or walkaround, 4 places a week. I always get kids either wanting to do the 3 row trick, or the trick that uses the glide. I can't stand it but you have to make the kids happy. Make the kids happy, you make parents happy, hopefully you get a nice tip.

There is this one trick I hate but can't seem to remember at the moment. I love all the tricks I do, especially my ambitious routine that ends folded in my mouth. I hate doing it when someones says, "Show them the trick where the card comes out of your mouth...!" Hate it when that happens. They probably meant well, but they unknowingly give out your kicker.

The one trick that I hate but everyone asks for... The Balducci Levitation. Ever since David Blaine's first special -- soon as people find out your a magician they tend to ask you if you can "float like that guy on tv".

Ok... then how about this; if you are asked to do a trick you hate doing, what do you do? Do you hold your nose and just get it over with so they'll be happy? Or do you show them something you think is better? Or do you hit them in the throat with a broken wine bottle and scream, "Levitate THIS!"?
What do you do? Myself, I will try to show them something I think is even better. But I've been known to cave to peer pressure. |

I really don't like "card in Wallet." Though I don't use a special wallet, I just have a card (duplicate) in MY wallet, then force it on them... I get great responces, but I feal guilty because it is so simple, and easy.

I don't really hate to do certain tricks. But after my ambitious routine I have a few people who say to me, "Can you fold the card and stick it in the middle and we can see it pop out on top like the David Blaine feller did on the telly?"
Here I am performing my OWN ambitious routine (quite happily too thank you!) which ends with a card to mouth/colour changing back kicker, and all they want to see is a recreation of something they saw on TV. I'm not saying they don't appreciate what I do - I think it's far from it. I'm sure they look at me and say, "Ok, this guy has got some skill. Maybe he can pull this off..". But it's like asking Michaelangelo to recreate the Mona Lisa - if he tried I'm sure he could, but I doubt he would enjoy it. Logan

What I hate, is when I'm performing on the street people say "Okay levitate like that David Blaine Guy". I like David Blaine, I think his Card Stuff is pretty decent, but I'm not into the whole video-tape editing stuff. Yes, I know, we all cheat in different ways (hell we're Magicians), but camera tricks (which I know he didn't use or anyone to my knowledge uses) and video editing is really CHEATING. It's hard to tell you what I mean. Now there's cheating, and then there is CHEATING. Do you get what I'm saying Vern?... I also know the most important thing is what the audience THINKS you do, NOT what you really do. Now I might get a lot of flack for this, (and NO I'm NOT (NOT) into exposing tricks), but I tell the people on streets, "Sure if I had the Camera Editing, and Equipment he used, then sure I can levitate." Like I said I DO like David's Magic, and a lot of people at the Café don't. I applaud his specials to get street magic back to life. I just don't like the "Bad Cheating" he used. Now we all have our own ethics on cheating, and I'm just stating my OWN HUMBLE OPINION. Sincerely Yours, Ed, (Eddini).

How about the Balducci Levitation.... Even thought it can be done almost anywhere, as you know you have to be careful and make sure your working environment and suroundings are apropriate.
In addition, repeating it for the same person is not a good idea and if you say "no", they know that it is a trick and you can't really float. I used to say that floating was very draining and that I will do it when I "feel" that I will be successful. That pushed them off and then I can pull the person they told about it off to the side and do it one on one a few minutes later. Oops that was not a card trick....sorry As far as card tricks are concerned....I guess any card trick is a problem, if you use a trick deck that you don't have with you. That is why I don't use trick cards Also, I believe that you never do a trick on demand. You should lead in a few new tricks and, if you want, perform the one they asked for when they don't expect it. (preferably using a different method). Jeff

As for me, when people ask me to float, I just jokingly say, "Ah, gotta lose a bit of weight first!"
Always gets a laugh and stops the hasseling. Take care, Logan

I hate when people tell (that's right, TELL me) to levitate. I think an audience thinks that because you are a magician you are doing anything you will to please them. I first tell them I'm not a dog and don't take commands, and that I don't like David Blaine or his camera tricks. The worst part is when they tell me I look like him.
Another thing is during my Trio in Three routine, I perform a muscle pass (the coin that falls up). After the whole trick is over people are amazed, but want to see the floating coin again. I usually perform it once again just so they'll leave it alone. |

I've tried the Paul Harris's (Paul Harris "Close-Up Astonishment Volume 7") method. I've maybe done it 30 times, and may have fooled 3-5 people. Now I do own a copy I bought of Zero Gravity, but I'm not "Mechanical", and wind up ruining a pair of shoes. I'll bring it to a shoe cobbler, and ask how much they'd charge. YES I would let them read the manuscript (Hey how else will they know how to make it), BUT I'd make them swear to secrecy. I've had the instructions for years, but just have never gotten around to going to a Cobbler. If I had Magician friends who lived near me and are mechanical, then obviously I'd pay them (A fellow Magician) to make it for me, but none live my way. Now is King Rising the same as Zero Gravity? They both seem the same. I hear (Besides the Elevator) that Zero Gravity is the better of the two. Now if that's true then the methods MUST be different. Also I forgot to mention that I do compliment David's non-gimmick levitation to others. I just didn't want you do think I was bashing his "total" levitation. I LOVE that joke Logan. THAT ROCKS!!!...lol. Ed, (Eddini).

For some strange reason, the tent vanish. I always thought it was obvious, but it gets good reactions. I don't feel comfortable with doing 2 card monte, but that gets screaming reactions. As for the "Can you levitate like Blaine" questions, I don't ever get asked. Everyone wants to see "The one David Blaine did where the card went through the window."

Ahhhhhhh I did card to rubbish bin about three years ago.....I swear there was maybe 5 people there and I palmed the Dupe(worst bottom palm ever)and amazingly the card jumped from the deck and in to the bin;)..the reactions were to my surprise total shock and to this day I still get requests to repeat it from people who were told about it.....so frustrating....I suppose simple magic hits hard but still very annoying!

One trick that I did years ago that I like actually, and got some of the strongest reactions was the rising card. Back then the S***e was made out of playing card stock. It was sturdier and better quality. Now, when I buy the deck it will only last 3-5 weeks. Nowadays the S***e, is plastic. I still love the trick, but people who saw me use the better made deck, still ask, do the floating card trick. I also have the e****** l**** for that version. I like the other better though, Ed, (Eddini).

As soon as someone finds out I can do magic I get asked if I can levitate like Blane. I pray for the day someone says "hey can you do that 3 card monte"?? A ray of sunshine would shout through the clouds.
