Surely the mentalism act is made stronger by the use of certain hypnotic language AKA Kenton.

Hypnosis does not have to be the overt swinging watch type.

This, of course, suits me just fine and I believe this is one of the major strenghts of combining hypnosis and mentalism.

If a spectator has just seen me do something that is clearly not a trick, such as "sticking" someones forefingers together or making them forget their name there's very little chance of them suspecting chicanery if I hand them a pad and ask them to write something down a little later on.

That is excellent thinking! I couldn't agree more (in the name of entertainment value)!

I have never seen hypnotists mixing mentalism in their shows, but I'm working only in Germany and the spanish islands...

but what I do I'm mixing readings in my show, and they work so well, now I do readings most and less hypnotism, I think they work well together...

If you have a look at luke jermay or Kneppers work there are a lot of gems in them, where you can mix mentalism with hypnosis... and why not mix hypnotism with mathematics? your credibilty is straight rising...

I am located in the UK, does anyone here know of a good training school for hypnosis?
Good Thoughts.

I NEVER mix anything but hypnosis.

I do believe something Mr. Osterlind said really hits home. You have to be a performer first. As a hypnotist, your fanny is hanging out there. I think that even as important as "training" in hypnosis, which I recomend highley, the training on routining, showmanship, how to release tension and when, is essential to the successfull performance of a hypnosis show.

PArson, I wonder what good ol' George Kresge will say now that hypnosis has been shown to be a discreet brain state, as evidenced by brain activity by CT scans. See The New Scientist's articles and JAMA for the specifics.

With regard to working as a hypnotist - this is REALLY working over Niagra FAlls without a net. If you tank, you TANK, big time. There is little fallback position unless you have something that is HIGHLY related TO hypnosis that you can pull out and do WITH a group of audience volunteers and that LOOKS like hypnosis.

Otherwise, unless you have it written into your contract and your promotional materials that you will be presenting matriela WITH hypnosis, your clients and your audiences might get just a wee bit peeved with you for NOT doing hypnosis, especially if they paid money for those seats that they are sitting in!

Hence the use of promo material that covers your assets, if nothing else. Or the use of pseudo-hypnotic stunts when an audience locks up on you - and they will every once in a while.

Lee you have hit on my "emergency show" concept.

A full evening show routined with nothing but "pseudo hypnosis" stunts.

Isn't some guy comming out with a book on that very subject? I forgot his name but I am really looking forward to its release as it will be a BOOM to anyone with enough brains to buy it.

Please let me know the authors name so I can look for it.

Thanks buddy

Actually, Danny, it will be a dvd. And it will be a collaboration between some guy related to a lawyer named Clarence working with the well-known mentalist Scott Xavier.

Lee I already knew that!!

I just wanted people to get the DVD. I am the ONLY guy I know with an "emergency show" and I feel your DVD will be a FANTASTIC step forward for any guys starting out.

Let me go off topic only slightly to say why.

When I do hypnosis or more appropriatly when I watch it, I don't want anything BUT.
Do what you told me you would. Contrary to popular belief among PERFOMERS it does NOT give you credability to do "tricks" prior or following hypnoisis, which is an actual phenemenon.

Have an opening act, fine I use one myself, DON'T DO IT YOURSELF.

Then to fail at hypnosis, and then say "pick a card" is just plain horrible. The people paid to see hypnosis, by golly they should see it by hook or by crook.

My real probem came doing 5 nights a week. IF I start canceling on ticket sellers because of low numbers, they have to refund, which they HATE. Pretty soon they just don't sell. So my show HAD to go on. Last thing I need is people going back to the brokers saying, "I thought it was hypnosis, all he did was card tricks". Again "refund and anger" is what would happen. NOT a good thing.

Thus my "emergency show". A series of pseudo hypnotic stunts that can actually result in hypnosis by the end. I am not going through them as I hear this Darrow guy is putting forth a DVD to help.

Point is that it LOOKS like hypnosis to the public. They paid $25 to see hypnosis and by golly that is what they got. Far as they know.

So my recomendation (after only 15 years and doing 5 nights a week in Branson Missouri) is to get this DVD. I know witl Lee doing it it will be of a certian quality.

P.S. nobody tell Lee I siad that, he thinks I hate him.

Danny, I know you don't hate me. I never said you did. Now you have gone and hurt my feelings and I shall be forced to go to my cave to pout and to evolve a while...

Oops, right... not allowed... to "intelligently redesign myself" ... yeah! That's the ticket!!!

Let's see, Step One: "Develop Intelligence" ... this is going to be tougher than I thought...!

Procyonrising, I disagree with your statement that the NGH has no standardization as to curriculum. The Guild most certainly does. However, the base curriculum is also often added to by the various instructors at their whim, which can be rather daunting to a new student. But the core curriculum, the BASE course and text, is Guild written and required. If you know of any Guild Certified Instructor (CI) who is teaching a course and is granting a Certified Hypnotist accolade at the end of the program without using the Guild-approved and written materials, please contact the Guild through their web site at http://www.ngh.net and let them know.

While other organizations might have varying standards (though I know for a fair certainty that the IMDHA is VERY strict on their standards as well), the Guild core materials are standardized even though the individual instructors often do include other materials in their classes, which is allowed under Guild regulations and which is stated, or should be, to the students upon their enrollment in the class. Also, any material which is not Guild approved is also supposed to be noted as such during the classes.

At least, that's my undertanding of the rules. If you have further questions on that, please feel free to contact the Guild, directly. They are happy to answer any questions about their course requirements and instructor certification programs.
