Quick query - and sorry, if not appropriate for this section of the forum (wasn't sure where best to post it), but as it concerns a stage illusion thought I'd try here first.

Anyway, I'm thinking of putting together a short "sketch" as part of an act, but not sure if there are any good products out there that would help me achieve the affect I'm after - or if I'd need to create my own prop/gizmo to make this happen - so any advice appreciated.

The scenario I'd like to create is this:

The performer begins their act wearing a hat. They take it at some point while speaking to the audience, and casually place it on a table (or alternatively they pretend to drop it on the floor). Then, either later on in the act, or soon afterwards the hat magically levitates back towards them (I'm not envisioning it landing back on their head - just back into their hands).

I know there have previously been some retractable (electronic?) invisible threads available - but not sure how strong these are and if they'd be able to achieve what I'm after.

Does anyone have any experience of doing something similar or any useful tips/links to products that might help?

Many thanks to all

EDIT: Forgot to mention - the main idea of the sketch is that the magician/performer is introducing their imaginary friend to the audience and talking about them as if they are real. The "twist" is at the end when they ask their imaginary friend to pass them their hat - and "hey presto" it floats over to them - so the effect isn't meant to be a demonstration of the performers magical power, more a humorous end to a routine

There are two scenarios you just wrote, which one is it, up to the performer or over to the performer. Two different mechanics at work.

What kind of hat, can you get the hat made up of lighter material.

Yes, you will have to create the working all yourself, a reel would be best, but none are much over 32 inches. I think the only old reel would be the Thornton reel, I think is the name. No longer made, and would be very pricey from a collector. It could stretch a full stage.

If this is to be on stage, then just have someone up in the rafters pulling a thread, or with a fishing pole with automatic rewind.

If it is to be humorous, and not any magical powers, then there is no need for magic, just attach a string, and pull it up at the correct time.

I have to say, you posted in the wrong section, this is for Grand Illusion, meaning boxes with assistants going in them and being vanished and such. There is a section for stage magic.

Hi Bill
Thank you for that advice (and for pointing out where this post might better sit)- will have a think about which of the scenarios would work best.

The stage where it would be performed is in a very small scale venue, so unfortunately I don't think the fishing rod reel idea would be possible - but a simple string attachment might work.

Many thanks

Have a friend here who has a Hat for juggling but has a black gimmick permanantly inside, the hat is reinforced for strength at the sides and uses a Zombie routine with foulard to float the Hat ...looks incredible as it also spins..
