Hello fellow magicians!
I am thinking about buying a set of nicer cups than the set I have at the moment. I want the cups to be as heavy as possible so that they can handle some drops at a street etc. I like the penguin cups because of the weight (and the price) but I like the Bosco shape of the cups much more. Therefore I was thinking about buying Bosco cups from El Duco (In Sweden where I live) but I am afraid that they are made out of way to thin metal. Do anybody have a set of bosco cups from El Duco who can give them a review? (I also don't want to pay more than 100 dollars for my cups) /Ark

I have a set of Bosco cups from Harries in Sweden. Are these the cups you're referring to? Nice cups. Lighter than a lot of large cups but still have a nice weight. And they fit your budget.

If you are going to drop the cups, Bosco cups (I don't think El Duco makes them, they come from Harries in Sweden) will dent easily.
You need to get something made heavier, but most cost more. Keep an eye on ebay and you may find something in the $100 range. The Charlie Miller cups and the less quality, but OK for the street are the Phoenix seconds. I might mention, the king of kups on the streets is Gazzo... and his cups are bent, dented, beat up and it doesn't stop him from doing a great routine.

Peter Biro - I meant Harries in Sweden, not El Duco. Your right on that one. The thing is that I don't want the cups to squash together when they hit the ground. I found the Penguin Cups and I believe they will hold for a drop, though they are so small that I don´t think they'll work any good on the street.
Mark - So you recommend the cups even though they are a bit thin in the design? Do the mouth swallow a lemon, apple or orange? The good thing about the Bosco cups are that you can buy the same cup as a chop cup... worth a thought. /Ark

Yes, I quite like them. Mine have been dropped a few times and are a bit dented but still work fine. They'll definitely take a lemon, a good size apple, or a medium orange. They won't quite load a baseball.
I would also recommend the Gazzo cups if you want to sink some more money into a set. They're by far the best I've used. I regularly use a set of Animal cups on the street. Made by the same guy that makes the Gazzo's but a trifle smaller. For close up I use a set of Phoenix cups. I use the Harries as an alternate in both scenarios. I really like the shape. Mark

I was recently contacted by Jim Riser. You may find his Jumbos are currently available, But I second lastnitesfun, you can't go wrong with the Gazzo Cups. I have owned a set since February. Spent a lot of money looking for the "grail." I have stopped buying cups.

I live in sweden and my first magic cataloge was from Harries in Ã…by only 120 km from my city. I can still recall when I flipped the pages and my young eyes went big. The pages was full of magic. I still have some of my first Harries effects.
The great magician Tim Star worked for Harries and he was making cups and stuffs. He also worked 14 years as an top magician on cruiseships around Miami. Now he lives in the US of A. http://www.harriesmagic.com/ (since 1910) |

I have the Bosco cups and love them. My final loads are Cricket balls and they fit perfectly into the cups.
I haven't dropped mine yet so I can't say how easily the dent. They're a little lighter than I would have liked but for the price you really can't complain. They are also one of the only classic non Paul Fox shaped sets I could find on the market.

I have all of the above. The Bosco cups are very nice, but the metal is somewhat thin. They are not very heavy. But they will work well for the street.
Something you might consider, even though he is too modest to push them, is a set of the Galli Galli cups that Pete Biro makes. He sells them through Stevens. Both of these are BIG cups. The Bosco cups will easily take a baseball, as will the Galli-Galli cups.

I have two sets of Gazzo cups now medium and large, these cups are every thing a street performer wants. They are solid, they sound good, they work smouth, and they look good. Worth the money because they are a work horse.

I am too modest... however, the supply is almost gone... Stevens has only a few sets left.

I'm completely happy with my Boscos from Harries. I have a couple of dings but that was from bad transportation of them on my part.
They're holding up well for me. Deerbourne |

I have a set of Bosco cups. I love the shape and size. (they are tall. when you do the elevator move, it's REALLY an elevator move They are made of a thinner metal, so I only use them in a club/ cabaret situation where they are less likely to get dropped. They can hold a surprisingly big load, (which I guess is the point), and the price makes them a huge bargain.

I can still recall when I flipped the pages and my young eyes went big. The pages was full of magic. Great post. That brings back fun memories of spending hours studying the magic catalogs and marveling at all the magic that was available. I still have my Tim Star chop cup. He made some great stuff. Joe |

Tim did some fine work. What is he doing now? I have at least two chop cups and a set of stainless cups that he made.

I think TIM STAR lives in Tennessee USA, he runs a computer business. I know he still perform magic but not as a pro. He was in sweden 1997 and did some great magic. He is very good at Sleight of Hand and his bird act was outstanding. His real name is Tomas Andersson. Born in sweden 1956.
Yes, I have his lecture notes from the early 80:s and it contains many cool effects. |

Kjellstrom,
Was Tim Starr (Tomas Andersson) a FISM Winner. I think he was a winner for dove manipulation. I this correct? |

He won many competions in sweden and in the US.
I heard that TIM STAR practised 8 hours every day years ago. First time I saw him was 1983 in my town and he did incredible magic. I can recall his routine with several candles, looked like real magic for my eyes. I bought his lecture notes (with autograph) plus a poker packet trick with gaffed cards. I was 15 year 1983. Im not sure if he ever won a FISM prize. Look for yourself here: http://www.fismmagic.com/download/download_e.asp This is Tims Star´s mail adress: timstar@bellsouth.net I found it on a swedish magic web. |

My Tim Star Chop Cup looks more like the one on Bill Palmer's webpage, except that mine is polished aluminum. It doesn't have the rings at the base.

Star made a great gaff for loading water in a cup when he worked for Rings 'N' Things. We communicated not too long ago, but he was in either the computer business or real estate and had seemed to have lost interest in magic.
I do have a set of his combo cups that are as good as any made.
