I have read several references to the 18 basic effects but cannot find a list anywhere. I can figure out the basic ones but my list hasn't reached 18 yet.
Vanish Production Solid through solid Transformation Levitation Broken and restored But that's only six. Thanks |

Hmm...I remember something about 8, adding transportation to your list (as in something going from one place to another within the same space)...Transforming including, size changes, people/objects switching place, color changes, etc...which leaves only one other which I can't seem to think of....unless you put something more towards the realm of mentalism.....
Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed and Tommy Emmanuel are all you need to study to learn to play guitar.

The 8 basic reactions goes as thus;
"Holy Moses!" "Good gravy!" "What the...?!" "How did you...?!" "You've got to be kidding!" "Great Custer's Ghost!" "Oh.... my... GOD!" "NFW!" (abreviated) |

Here are the 21 classifications of magic per Fitzkee:
Production (appearance) Multiplication (making one into many) Vanish (disappearance) Transposition (invisible travel) Transformation (making one into another) Penetration (solid through solid) Restoration (making the destroyed whole) Animation (making things move by themselves) Levitation (anti-gravity) Attraction (mysterious adhesion) Sympathetic Reaction (making an object do the same thing as another object) Invulnerability (indestructibility; ability to avoid harm) Physical anomaly (contradictions; freaks) Spectator Failure (challenges; "sucker" effects) Mind Over Matter (making things "move" with the power of the mind) Divination (mentally locating an object) Thought Reading (mentally reading another's thoughts) Thought Transference (mentally sending thoughts to another) Prediction (foretelling a future action or situation) Mental agility (memorization; lightning calculation) Hypnotism (mentally causing changes in the actions of others) |

Buckley's Principles and Deceptions has a take on this also - not as long as Fitzkee if I recall correctly...

Fitzkee left out "escapes" (not all of which classify as penetrations).
IMHO those who try to definitively classify magic effects need to find something more productive to do. Steve

Steve,
Some would say that about people who practice the art of illusion also. Thank you for your insight. Escapes seem to balance between magic and something else. There is the "How did he do it" factor in both. |

I just found this thread! --I just joined this "show" about a year and a half ago. I've been performing for 68 years and the thread topic intrigues me.
I've read--and studied--Fitzkee, et al, so I'm familiar with Fitzkee's "list". --and I think he did an excellent job in compiling his "list". I have a file drawer "jammed" with instructions for for props and effects. I use a "simplification" of Fitzkee's "list" i.e. I have combined some of the effects since, for example, I don't do much in the are of mentalism. I've "simplified" CARD TRICKS! --They are ALL in one "end" of the drawer!!! (I'm not a cardician--lol) So! I have one instruction sheet from the '40s. It's for Joe Ovette's "REPEAT KNOTS". I've used this trick since 1846. the late ROY SHRIMPLIN, a school show professional showed it to me when I was 15. Here's the EFFECT: (I define EFFECT as "what the spectator sees, or THINKS he/she sees.) Magician ties a simple overhand knot in a length of rope. He "tightens" the knot, and then SLIDES THE KNOT ALONG THE ROPE AND FINALLY OFF THE END. HE CAN THEN TOSS THE KNOT TO THE SPECTATOR(S). The effect is instantly repeatable (thus the name of the trick) One of my early mentors, professional school show performer, ROY MAYER told me that the REPEAT KNOTS, which was the second trick in Roy's program, "got" a STANDING OVATION in a military school (high school kids)in the early '50s! Roy was a consummate performer, and had years of experience, but he was totally SURPRISED. --He had 43 more minutes to go, and he had to really "step on the gas" to get the show moving again! This INSTRUCTION SHEET HAS NOT BEEN FILED FOR OVER FIFTY YEARS!!!!!!! I simply cannot decide where it fits in Fitzkee's "list"!!!!!!!!!! Anyone care to comment??? (signed) >>> "FRUSTRATED"

Dick -- don't be frustrated -- rejoice in the fact that your thinking is three dimensional rather than limited by a two dimensional list. (de-mential?)
The desire to categorize magic effects has a value -- if it is a platform for creativity. If it is viewed as constraints or limits it is of little value. I can think of dozens of effects that do not fit "on the list" When a waitress asks if you would like pie or pudding for desert many act as if that is a limit to your options (a list). You can also say, No, I would like ice cream." "no" is always an option and will be understood. Yet, "yes" is also an option and probably will not be understood as allowing for delivery of either or both. To the extent that magic relies on a balance of anticipation and surprise there should always be an element of unpredictability -- even in a repeat effect as you describe. The audience craves a repeat to see if you will FAIL. Personally, I feel that there should also be some AFFECT to good magic as well as EFFECT. That is not on the list either.

I am not sure that Fitzkee's list is the last word but not all tricks can be classified into one category.
I would say it combines: Penetration (solid through solid) Restoration (making the destroyed whole) Physical anomaly (contradictions; freaks)
I am getting so tired of slitting the throats of people who say that I am a violent psychopath.
