How does the use of a card fit into the presentation?

Or is it supposed to be delivered in a random way?

To each his own.

I would have them think of a card and then say, “we need something else random... hmmm... but I want it to be related to the card I some way... how about a country! Think of a country that starts with this letter”

As with anything propless, the routine is what you make of it.

I like that this uses a combo of techniques from the propless 'toolbox'.

I imagine it plays strong when presented/performed in the right way - which I'm basing off how well a certain aspect of 'Isabella Star 3' plays when performed - as well as Joshua Quinn's work.

I'll be picking this up (along with 'Navigator') as soon as pay day comes.

It’s simple.

They think of a card. They use a letter from the card to think of a country. You reveal the country and the card.

No grey elephants feel. The part of the process spectators remember from grey elephants trick is all the math. There’s no math in this.

Madison, with due respect, I don't know your age but Grey Elephants was doing the rounds in Britain about 25 years ago. I was working in an office and one of my temps found it fascinating (one of the DJs on Radio 1, a station with millions of listeners had done it) and wondered how far it could be taken. The process you are describing - taking a letter from a playing card to think of a country - is EXACTLY like part of the Grey Elephants procedure. I am by no means suggesting everyone you do it for will be reminded of the process but I strongly suspect, in the UK at any rate, that quite a few people will think it's "one of those tricks" rather than a mind reading demonstration.

To each his own, David! I know I do tricks with letters being used to think of other things quite often, actually and never once has anyone told me “oh this is like the grey elephants thing.”

Because it’s not... grey elephants is a mathematical force. This isn’t a force. It’s a restriction. So even if they think it’s grey elephants, as soon as they consider the fact that there are many choices they could have made, it negates the notion completely.

Madison, PART of Grey Elephants is mathematical but just as much of is "And now think of a country with that letter...now think of an animal beginning with the second letter...". Are you seriously telling me that it doesn't bear a resemblance?

I'm not saying it can't fly, I'm saying that there are people out there more clued up than we care to admit. When Grey Elephants first became popular I was in an office of 3000 people and every day we had messages doing the rounds with cute personality tests, mathematical tricks or even psychological forces. I'd certainly never present anything like this as a serious attempt at mindreading. But as you say, each to their own.

From the author - Luke Turner:

Hi,I appreciate the questions and concerns and will try to answer them as best as I can. I understand how this may sound from just "ad copy". However the actual issue from giving it the "grey elephant feel" is actually solved in the pdf,due to the way we set ourselves up and how we treat the spectator. The manner of presenting the switch from card to country is (and kenton knepper has agreed with me) not only justified but it also feels fair.
The concern of this not feeling as a presentation of mind reading is the very thing that the pdf continuously takes care of.
I hope this helps.

Could you use a segue from card to "think of a casino, use a letter from your card to create the country the casino is in" etc, or something along those lines

Apologies for the late reply. Yes that would work!

OK, Madison- I'm thinking of a playing card.

Now I'm thinking of a country that has a letter in it from the playing cards name.

What card and what country am I thinking of?

I hate things like this.

There's always some weird and convoluted way of getting the answer after I "think" of it.

Madison likes everything that he gets for free, and that's a lot of stuff, believe me.

It's been a long time since I've relied on any of his recommendations.

I never believe any of these guys that get free review copies, and there are plenty of them here.

They love everything, and then keep getting more free stuff.

I pay for everything that I get.

PS- I hope that Rus gets to London OK.

I'm very worried!

The ice age is coming, the sun is zooming in,
Engines stop running, the wheat is growing thin,
A nuclear era, but I have no fear,
'Cause London is drowning and I..... I live by the river!

I have Maddy’s reviews to be articulate and in-depth enough to help gauge if an effect is suitable .

Only a month ago he did a review after receiving a free copy and though written politely was not flattering . As for not writing negative reviews . I once wrote up a quick effect which a friend of mine asked if he could use in a booklet , to which I said yes . Madldy did not like the effect and said so bluntly and his reasons why . I was happy that he expressed his opinion and did not sit on the fence

You're part of The Club, Mr Brown.

If I remember correctly (and I do), some time ago I bought one of your effects that the guys here were raving about.

It went into my pile of garbage.

But, to be fair, I guess, these types of things depend quite a bit on your abilities and performance style.

It didn't suit my style at all.

OK, so Maddy doesn't give good reviews to EVERYTHING.

We still know what's going on.

Why is it so hard to figure out that, for us to believe that you're objective, you can't take stuff for free?

Hello Jack

I am not sure what you mean part of the Club Jack . I have only released 1 effect and if my memory is correct we made 3 refunds out of 1000 sales because I strongly beleive in giving information to make an informed opinion at the expense of making more sales . I do not make a leaving form selling magic hence 1 product in 5 years I have given away numerous effects for free which others have used in books that I do not profit from .

I have a fairly good knowledge of magic effects and principles . When Docc Hillford released an effect it was me who pointed where pretty much the exact effect was in the Jinx. .Iluudionist released an effect where the video used a mem deck version in a demo but the ad blurb was misleading . Another effect released the dealer changed the wording because of comments I raised .

If a friend were to ask me to praise an effect I think is rubbish I would not do it .

I just got pointed to this thread and was informed of the negativity surrounding me here.

First off, I find the Café to be overwhelmingly negative nowadays. Literally no one is able to post anything or say anything without getting ridiculed.

I’ll only say a couple of things to defend myself, and then I won’t be responding again because I have better things to do than this.

I get a LOT of offers to review material. Of those, I have the freedom to pick and choose what I review and what I don’t review. If I don’t like a product, I don’t review it. It’s as simple as that.

So no, I don’t love every product I’ve ever received. In fact, there’s a GREAT deal I really do not enjoy. But there’s enough negativity in the Café. There’s no need for me to flame someone. If a product is bad, everyone else on the Café will let the potential buyers know.

The one thing I try to do is be honest about what the effect is and isn’t and leave readers more informed than they were before they read the review.

And I for one really do appreciate your reviews. I understand the suspicion of others as to some reviewers here on the Café. But rather than flame people because it's their friend or colleague I just take note of which camp they tend to belong to.
In Madison case he gives many, many fine and informative review. And I do get it, if the product doesn't come up to commercial expectations, he'd rather not write a review on it. Thus many of his writings are positive because he likes it and gets his perspective on it out here to members.
These personal attacks made here on line are really uncalled for. Rather than flame someone, if you have the product write your own review honestly.

But I don't get things for free, so I'd have to spend my limited discretionary income on garbage that I don't like in order to do it instead of spending it on food and housing.

If everyone wants to send me free stuff and take a chance on my bad reviews, let's go!

Oh my, I don't see too many takers.

Free stuff only goes to people that only write good reviews.
