I absolutely *love* trick plays in baseball. They remind us that baseball is a game. It's supposed to be fun. These exceedingly well-paid men could and should act like very lucky boys who have grown up with enough opportunity, skill, and talent to continue to play the game in order to entertain us.
Baseball is, after all, entertainment. Just like magic. Why do the infielders continue to throw the ball around the horn after an out when no one is on base? Are they still practicing? Are they still in Little League? No, they do it because that's tradition. Hidden ball tricks are part of the tradition. They remind us that, yes, we ought to always pay attention and keep our eye on the ball. And they remind us that we are all grown-up little boys and girls. |

I remember being picked off by the hidden ball from the first baseman... in LITTLE LEAGUE. I thought the first example was the funniest, given that this is major league baseball with a running coach at first, etc. Lotsa money there. Other examples, like the catcher's fake throw to 2nd (to pick off the 3rd base runner) are very standard in baseball, and not trickery at all. In fact, the 3rd base runner may even taunt the catcher to throw it away! It's all part of the game. Not cheating at all. Lynn
