"The New York Papers," Mark Twain once said,"have long known that no large question is ever really settled until I have been consulted; it is the way they feel about it, and they show it by always sending to me when they get uneasy. "

Do you have to be sitting in a chair in order to perform the routine as Chris does it?

For 5 dollars more you can learn this on his Penguin live lecture along with a ton of other stuff including his bill in lemon.

This is a very excellent two-ring routine. On the DVD he discusses his chair, how he modified it, what its called and what you would need to do to make your own. He also says he's about to release his modified chair as a product which I would also like to see (however the "product" page on his website currently links to "trade shows").
The entire DVD is 70 mins, which includes his full performance and explanation. It is professionally shot in a white studio with multiple cameras and close-ups. While he discusses the basic premise of the routine in his Penguin Live lecture, its only about ten minutes on there. You would be better buying R2 which covers EVERYTHING and is much better produced. On R2, he explains each move in detail which is rare and lovely to see. I would advise anyone wanting to learn the rings to do his two-ring moves first before going into 4 and 8 rings. It shows progression and fills more time on stage (if that is your goal). He discusses the reel he uses for the silk thru mic stand / linking ring. Why he uses it etc. and I imagine this advise alone will be put to some use. As a two-ring routine with his switch, and done to music - its fantastic. He ends it with a final link and a headbow as the music ends. So it doesn't have a surprise ending, but it does conclude. For most performers, this is a middle-of-the-show trick and perhaps if Im being critical, lacks a magical surprise ending. But it is a beautiful routine with some two-move links which are really nicely taught. Its also cheap at $19.96 on Penguin so I would advise any ring enthusiast to buy it. |
