I wrote my eBook "NADA" for this same motivation.
It is great to have real world and reliable "propless" routines that you can share anytime, anywhere, without being dependent of physical props. If anyone is interested in the "10 Commandments of Propless", you can read it in HERE

I would say this, but palmistry. Works every time, leaves everyone in a good mood, elevates your status and leaves people thinking you're jolly clever and perhaps gifted.
It also lasts longer than five seconds and can last almost as long as you want it to. Perhaps you shouldn't have said 'tricks' - most mentalists don't like calling them tricks :O |

Can't remember but it does ring a bell. There was also something by KK about the lines moving as I recall.

By the way, when I was looking up the specific effect above, I ran into a short video that had some stuff that could be restructured in a hypnosis or mentalism routine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alubBa1s2G0

Thank you Greg exactly what I was looking for and I believe old enough that a whole new generation would not know it?

Well here are the pieces I like to perform when I have nothing:
1. Guess Who by Peter Turner (name guess; this is great, it is pretty sure-fire and makes your life much easier but also makes it seem like you know more than you do) 2. Not So Bold Pin Divination by Peter Turner (pin divination; combined with a few ideas from Fraser Parker & Silas Linden, it’s pretty great) 3. Psygn Language by Matt Mello (star sign divination; not process heavy, reliable, and works on multiple people at once, all around great when performing for many people) 4. Phantom Book Test by Peter Turner (word guess; pretty reliable and not process heavy, really good) 5. Missing No. by Peter Turner (pin divination; this is different as it is for multiple people) 6. Isolation by Michael Murray (thought of playing card guess; this is so, so, good and deceptive) 7. Proteus by Phedon Bilek (propless drawing dupe.; I mean, what can I say? It’s just a really good propless drawing dupe.) 8. Unspoken by Adrien Lochon (star sign divination; this is really amazing and is probably my favorite star sign divination. True to the name, the spectator says nothing and yet you are able to narrow from 12 star signs down to 3 and then to 1 almost instantly) 9. Navigator by Reese Goodley (country guess; this is really good but I don’t use it as often) 10. The Midas Touch by Peter Turner (pk touch; the best pk touch I’ve seen and just blows people’s minds) And of course, the gem of my propless material: 11. Train Tracking by Atlas Brookings (word guess; I like to combine this with a few other ideas, mainly from Peter Turner and Francis Girola, but this is just so, so amazing! If you have this and you don’t perform it, what are you doing?) Oh yeah, Here are the sources for the routines: 1. Devil In Disguise 2 by Peter Turner 2. Propless Mentalism (Vol 12) by Peter Turner 3. Psyware by Matt Mello 4. Isolation by Michael Murray 5. Proteus by Phedon Bilek 6. The Jafi Read by Adrien Lochon 7. Navigator by Reese Goodley 8. Midas Touch by Peter Turner 9. Train Tracking by Atlas Brookings 10. Leviathan by Francis Girola |

There is an effect/demonstration called "In Silence" detailed in my book "Furst Time."
I saw it performed in 1959 by Arnold during a lecture at a PCAM convention. I have never read of anyone performing it, or recommend that anyone should. But, understanding the logic and method could be of value in many other mind-based effects. It is "prop-less" in that all items used in the telepathy are provided by members of the audience. Arnold used his own watch to seed the volunteering, but all could come from volunteers. Even better for the "nothing" condition is that no words are spoken to the one volunteer who does the telepathy. Quick overview. A female volunteer is escorted from the room with no instructions or contact. Five volunteers place a personal item on a table: watch, ring, wallet, etc. These are mixed and spread out. The girl returns and is guided into seeing the objects and being make comfortable by touch alone - no words spoken. She closes her eyes. The audience then decides on the order of items for the test - no words. The performer holds that object behind the girl's head but far away and no words. She raises her arm and slowing points to the person to whom the object belongs. This is repeated for all five objects. No prep. No secret assistant. No words. It does take hypnotism skills however. This was performed in total silence - and got what the effect deserved. No applause. No questions. Just about 50 magicians with their mouths open.
"the more one pretends at magic, the more awe and wonder will be found in real life." Arnold Furst

When in comes to propless mentalism, two names pop into my mind:
Fraser Parker and Atlas Brookings Fraser’s work relies more on linguistic subtleties and using your words to shape the spectator’s perception. This of course requires you to be more nuanced with your words and sometimes even though you executed it perfectly, it still might not work if the spectator doesn’t listen to your instructions. However, the benefit is that it can appear extremely clean and impossible. You just have to be careful with who you perform too. Atlas’ work is more surefire but a lot of it relies on memory work and the routines are often longer. I personally don’t mind having to work hard memorizing information and stuff but I understand it’s not for everybody. If you do, however, decide to put in the work, I promise the routines will pay off greatly. Basically, if you want more bold and clean propless mentalism that is still deceptive, check out Fraser Parker’s work. If you want surefire stuff that is very deceptive and are prepared to work hard memorizing stuff, go with Atlas Brookings’ work. Just my thoughts. K |

His work on Anagrams/ other systems however are a great resource and his structuring of those type of routines are well worth looking at and you can tell they have been tested to the point of perfection. His performance style I’m on the fence about, he’s a bit clynical for my liking - but as I’ve said before horses for courses. His work I enjoy. Fraser on the other hand is a different kettle of fish, I was enthralled with his true mysteries dvd set, some of the effects felt a little unfinished almost like the ideas went nowhere but I had countless hours of fun creating my own routines based around the methods he shared. His recent body of work seems to be rehash after rehash with little change inbetween and the “new” version of the same effect (just with a different name) hasn’t moved things past some of his incredible earlier strides. I don’t watch Fraser for his performances, he’s oddly awkward and his hands don’t tell the same story his mouth does and when he speaks (when performing) it comes out in an unorganised fashion. Its hard to explain its like his words are tripping over each other but the philosophies and thinking he shares (as a creator) are a great food for thought for anyone that doesn’t want an out of the box set of effects or routines. If you have the creativity to add the missing elements or change some of the patter then his stuff can be remarkable. But I for one am getting as sick of seeing the same effects released by Parker as I am seeing “Touching on Hoy” (which is a brilliant prop-less routine and Jermay is a masterful performer) on everyone of Luke’s products. Day for any date is pretty good. The best thing I have used is a psychometry demonstration where people hand up items of jewellery and you give a brief cold reading for the person who hands you the object. I learned this from a Richard Webster book. I was astonished at the reaction! People almost climbing over each other in their eagerness to hand me an object.
I also have a performance piece from Tony Griffiths of England which uses no props and gets me a standing ovation every time. I think I will keep this to myself for the moment. However, it can be found in Tony's book "Reflections" |
