Hi, I know that multiplying candles has been mentioned several times before on this Café, but since those posts were over 4+ years ago, I wanted to ask again just in case there are better things available since the last time this topic was mentioned.
Specifically, I was interested in incorporating multiplying candles into a manipulation act, but I have no idea as to what multiplying candle set to start off with. I am very comfortable with difficult sleight of hand, so I don't consider difficulty to be a limiting factor. I am more concerned with good quality relative to cost. Any opinions on what a good set to start off with might be? As an aside question, I was also interested in whether there is material out there regarding lit production of ungimmicked candles, a la Fred Kaps. Thanks in advance. |

The situation is still the same with Multiplying Candles. The only current good set is Tim Star's Multiplying Candles. They are the best. I am sure being you did previous research, you already know this. He sells a 4 candle set, and an 8 candle set. Very reasonable for today's high inflation, cost wise. There has been no report on Tim Star's condition since the dog attach, so it would be best to contact him to see if he can supply, and in what time frame. His policy at answering email is mentioned on his site. He usually takes a few days to answer.
Nothing has been published on Fred Kaps purely manipulation style for the the Multiplying Candles. If you have what the video, then you already have seen how his coat sleeve catches on fire. ( If you did not catch it, watch the video until you do, as you are not paying attention.) I think it is not a far leap to working out the method he uses. The old Supreme Magic books have been released for distribution, these are old stock, you might want to get a copy of Mainly Manipulative Magic by John Albrough. This is a total sleight of hand method he developed and routine. This will get you thinking toward the Kap's handling. As far as lighting the manipulation candles, you have to make them them yourself with wood dowels. Best solution is to buy the old miniture Coke lighter on eBay and cut the lighter element out, and put it in the dowel. U.F. Grant is give credit for this simple solution for lighting a candle, with is his "Candle from Pocket". Now you have all the information to create your own manipulation set of candles, this what I have figured out over the years. |

I actually have an original set of 4 candles made by Tim Star. I guess I should figure out what they are worth and sell them. I will probably never use them.
To the layman, it doesn't matter what style you use Morgan, Loyd's, Star or Kaps, It is up to you to sell it.

As a note of explanation, the Morgan or Star models are designated for Left or Right hand, although with a change in handling, either one could be used in either hand. These are hinged together so that one candle cannot be separated from the other three. This can impact your routining.
The Loyd candles are constructed differently, and allow for a little more choice in handling. Owen magic used to make a Loyd style candle set and perhaps still does. If you are looking at videos, Fantasio and Dick Gustafson used the Loyd candles. As did Aubrey...

Dick Gusafson told me that he has a friend that repairs his Loyd candles regularly as they over heat easily and the insides fall apart. So I am glad I never purchased a set.
I do have 2 sets of Morgan and the Star 4 candle set, I believe Stars are the best for a great routine, and being able to show candles individually. The Morgan's are purchased as left or right, but if you try to handle them as such, you put have to hold the very awkwardly by turning your wrist, which put your stance toward the audience off. I suggest you follow the instructions by Lewis Ganson from Manipulation magic book. Make the holders as well and all will be good. Get the Star holders if buying from Star, they are wonderful, he does not list them on his website, but he does make and sell them, just ask, very reasonably priced. The audiences love this effect, you can hear comments of surprise and wonder from them as they appear and disappear as well as multiply. Hers is a professional tip I learned many years ago. The best fuel is smokeless lamp oil, used by restaurants. Burns pure, and does not burn up the wicks so fast you have to constantly replace them, which is a pain to do. |

When performing this with a very old set (1925?) of unknown origin, I have always added a metal TT equipped with wick and pad for lighter fluid.
It is very impressive to transfer a flame from candle to candle with your fingertips. Especially since the dang things go out easily with a draught.

That TT idea can also be used to remove a candle and transform it into a silk. Very magical effect during a show. You can even with some thought transform all 4 candles to silks, and then carry on with a silk effect of your choice.
A Diana Zimmerman idea she published years ago. |
